There is many examples of evidence to support how Europe wasn’t in a dark age. To support this claim there are some examples. The Government ,The Rise of University, and the Gothic Cathedrals shows that Europe was not in a dark age. One reason Europe was not in a dark age was because if it was in a dark age they wouldn't know to stand up for themselves. They also had a lot of money, even though King John took it all proving that they were not in a dark age. They were also beginning to request laws so they can have some rights. According to the Black Death Documents,"To all free men of our kingdom we have also granted, for us and to our heirs for ever, all the liberties written out below, to have and to keep for them and their heirs.”Another
These examples show how Europe was in a dark age. Europe was not in a dark age because of the many events that happened. These events actually helped Europe not become a dark age. For example, Document F discusses Europe had so much money and used that money to buy products and materials
The dark ages were considered dark because of the countless times Europe’s been invaded. “... the heathen broke in upon the Christians at many points, but more than 12,000 of them died. Another party of invaders devastated Gaul, and more than 600 of them died” (Doc C). This all happened in the same year (845) and just shows how often Europe was invaded and ravaged. This evidence was from the abbey of Xanten records, which was made at the time and is a primary source. “The heathen from the North caused trouble in Christendom as usual and grew greater in strength” (Doc C). The records say that they invaded as usual, which shows how frequently they were invaded and how routine it was. They were so terribly secured and a main cause of this was
The “Dark ages” was found by an Italian scholar, Petrarch, in the 1300s. The term Dark Age was used to explain the period (movie talk-dark ages). The Dark Age could be in a growth age or a dark age. This is applied to “dark” and “light”. This can be argued by the evidence of what is going on during 500AD-1500AD. The debate between Europe being in a Dark Age or growth age is based off of how well the evidence supports the statement and this judgment is clearly stated that Europe is NOT in a dark age based on all the supported evidence.
The term “Dark Age” was used to by an Italian Scholar named Petrarch, who compared the “dark” to the classical period before. Medieval Europe was from 500 to 1500 AD, which included the Crusades and the Black Death. Europe, during the time 500 to 1500 AD, was a dark age because there was violence, war, and disease. Europe was in a dark age.
A common discussion going on today is was Europe in a dark age or in a growth period. Europe was in a dark age because of what was going on in Europe during the medieval period, 500 AD to 1500 AD. In this time The Black Death happened, many crusades and how they had to resort to primitive ways of living and not live on their own. Europe was in a dark age because of these reasons. To start during early 1300 the black death started infesting Europe.
The Black Death was a major part of Europe being in a dark age. The Black death is a huge example of Disease, which proves that Europe was a dark age. According to the Black Death Document A, it states,“In all the city there was nothing to do but carry the deed to a burial.” This proves that many people died due to the Black Death. As well as the Black Death, the crusades also contributed to Europe being a dark age. The crusades were a religious war between the Christians and Muslims. According to Document A, “Some of our men (and this was more merciful) cut off the heads of their enemies; others shot them with arrows, so that they fell from the towers.” With this evidence you can see
First, one reason that “The Dark Ages” is an inaccurate term to describe the Middle Ages is because there were important things that happened, even though the reason they happened maybe wasn’t because of something good. For example, in Document B when it says “After John lost a battle against France, the king had to make sure he had the support of his nobles. As a result, he agreed to sign
After the Fall of Rome, the Dark Ages occurred during the Middle Ages in Western Europe, France, Germany and Italy. The term “Dark Age” is an accurate description for Western Europe despite the formation of feudalism and the united church. The severity of disease, such as the plague, killed millions of people and lead to society not having the desire to prosper with education . These reasons, among others, demonstrate that Western Europe was truly a Dark Age.
The American Cyclopaedia describes The Dark Ages as a “period of intellectual depression in the history of Europe.” This means that the term The Dark Ages was just another name for the early middle ages in Europe. There wasn’t much evidence about the time available, historians didn’t know much about it and so they say that the period was “in the dark.” Over time, people began using it as a term for all the middle ages. Instead of basing these theories off of their lack of information, historians just assumed that the people and life at the time were “dark” also. Now they have discovered more documents from that time, and so it isn’t seeming as “dark” anymore.
Many people cannot agree on whether the European Middle Ages were “Dark Ages” or an “Early Renaissance”. A Dark Age is a time during which a civilization undergoes a decline, while a Renaissance is a new period of growth or activity. Even though there is an equal amount of evidence for both the Dark Ages and the Early Renaissance, some pieces were more effective than others. The European Middle Ages was an Early Renaissance because citizens started to begin new lives as different roles, the feudal system was slowly being forgotten, and the Magna Carta was published.
Because of the Black Death, Crusades, and violent laws, one may consider that Europe was in a dark age from 500 to 1500 AD. Violence, chaos, and death are three contributing factors that the Black Death had on European citizens from the 14th century until the 17th century. An Estimated 450 million people have died from this terrible Plague. According to Black Death document, “[The Black Death] was such a frightful thing that when it got into a house, as was said, no one remained." The Crusades impacted Medieval European society because of violent war and gory death. As stated in the Crusades Document, " Indeed, it was a just and splendid judgment of God that this place should be filled with the blood of the unbelievers, since it had suffered so long from their blasphemies." Loss of a hand and 60 lashes were some of the punishments of European
There were many reasons why europe was brought out of the dark ages and into the modern age. Some of the reasons we went into the dark ages, was because of diseases, superstition, and unhealthy sanitary conditions. The Bubonic plague in 1340, also known as the “black death” was a disease that killed over 60% of the population. With people just dropping dead the europeans were completing their bucket list wishes, like murdering people so the world was a dangerous place at the time and many people tried to stay from the people and disease because the it was airborne. The europeans unhealthy sanitary conditions, were a big part of why they died. For example, when they went to the bathroom they would relieve themselves in buckets, and tuck it a corner or under their
Ever since Islam was born, Muslims had made immense leaps forward in the area of Science. Cities like Baghdad, Damascus, Cairo and Cordoba were the centers of civilization. These cities were flourishing and Muslim scientists made tremendous progress in applied as well as theoretical Science and Technology. In Europe, however, the situation was much different. Europe was in the Dark Ages.
There are multiple reasons that led Europe to rise out of the dark ages. One of the factors that caused Europe to be successful once again is gaining knowledge from foreign developed civilizations. European travelers were introduced to new inventions,spices,ideas,education/literature and many other influences from the east. The invention of literature had an impact to the Europeans society because there was little information available and so literature was a main cause that ended the dark
Europe in the Middle Ages was dominated by the Roman Catholic Church. The Roman Catholic Church persecuted the Jews in the Middle Ages and used their power against the Jews. There was social, religious and economic reasons for this enmity and this hatred manifested itself in practice in many ways.
