Evaluate a range of ways to embed elements of functional skills in your specialist area. Nic Shaw Word Count 558 Functional skills are defined as ‘practical skills in English, information and communication technology (ICT) and mathematics that allow individuals to work confidently, effectively and independently in life.’ (The Qualifications and Curriculum Development Agency, 2010). ICT: Technology used in homes of people with dementia is generally referred to as assistive technology for its ability to “ assist the person with dementia to live a normal life as possible”. (Marshall 2001: p130). A training session will be focused upon the use of technology and therefore ICT embedded within. This is an excellent way of including this functional skill within the learning outcomes as well as developing an understanding of how this can be used to support people with dementia. Care staff will also be asked to perform self study research exercises in which they investigate aspects of dementia, for example person centred care. During this research exercise the students will be given internet time and at the end asked to feedback their findings to a small group, thereby also further developing their literacy skills. Use of the internet is not only an excellent way for learners to learn about dementia but also to develop their own personal ICT skills. To conclude, the development of all three functional skills is the key to ensuring that learners are equipped with a good transferable skill set. These skills enable individuals to conduct themselves confidently, effectively and independently in all aspects of life as well as within their work with people with dementia .
