As the review of literature progressed, it became obvious that a comparative approach to studying assisted living developing guidelines for establishing a strategic process model of assisted living for effectiveness of operation would raise significant and important questions that would facilitate accurate data collection and analysis. The questions raised and the data sought evidently evoked the appropriateness of employing a qualitative approach to the study.

In the handbook of qualitative research Denzin and Lincoln (2005) describe qualitative research as involving “… an interpretive naturalistic approach to the world. This means that qualitative researchers study things in their natural settings, attempting to make sense of or interpret phenomena in terms of the meanings people bring to them.” (p. 3)

Describe the proposed research method
Three novel accredited assisted living care models will be selected. The criteria for selecting the models includes that the assisted living is accredited by ------, approved by the state and meeting federal and state regulations, policies and procedures.
The selected models will serve as case studies. The case study will be limited to three process models. These are: (1) Spring House Assisted Living (2) Aderns Court Assisted Living (Manor Care) (3) Atrium Village (Assisted Living)
To be selected and included in the study, the assisted living must have demonstrated the achievement of an “effective assisted living community” through effective leadership. Other qualities sought include orientation to the strategic process concept of assisted living, overall excellent programing, adhering to policies and procedures, and meeting rules and regulations for assisted living modus operandi.
