Evaluating Social Work

It is important that judges have accurate information about the family that allows them to make decisions that will be in the best interests of the child. Mental health evaluations used in child custody cases should be able to give family courts a thorough and unbiased assessment about the functionality of a family and the child’s best interests. Lee, Borelli and West (2011) state that ‘‘best interests of the child’’ legal standard, custody evaluators rely on their assessment of the parent-child relationships. A counselor should be able to identify each parent’s capacity to meet the needs of the child. A negative aspect to the judge's decision is that it can result in the relocation of child with a parent which in turn disturbing the child's familiar way of life(Kennedy, 2012).

In social work practice, client assessments are important because they allow social workers to gather information from clients. This information helps the acting social worker better understand clients presenting problems. The assessment also helps social workers evaluate a client’s progress and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions used. In this paper, a multidimensional assessment will be performed on a client I have been working with at my internship placement, Urban Ministries of Durham. Once all relevant information is presented, and intervention and treatment plan will be discussed.

The class SW 6030 Human Development and the Social Environment has brought new insights and makes me see some topics in a different perspective. The critical reflection paper number one will integrate different concepts that I learned so far in this class.

The Journey Track intervention at UMD was developed by one current UMD employee Clinical Director: Ms. Maruka Rivers, LCSW, MSW, and one former UMD employee Shelter Manager/Program Director: Mr. Alexander Herring and was presented to the 26 member Board of Directors at UMD in 2013. The Board of Directors at UMD consisted of residents of the City of Durham, such as; UMD Chair- David Sotolongo, V.P at RTI International, Vice Chair- Harry Hutson, Jr., a self-employed Management Consultant, Treasurer- Yolanda Brown, writer, blogger and founder of Fun Space, and Secretary- Madeline Seltman, Youth, Family, & Camp Director at Levin Jewish Community Center (“Board of Directors,” 2009, para.2). The UMD Board of Directors in their discussion making process may have referred to evidence base management techniques. This is where an organization utilize research evidence in the management style of their organization (“Kettner, McMurtry, & Netting,” 2008, pg. 249-251). Case in point, the Board of Directors may have requested recent data in relation to programs similar to the Journey Track, which evaluated the effectiveness of those programs. This evidence could determine if this intervention process is effective in addressing the needs of the client base. Ms. Morter was licensed as a Clinical Social Worker, and was also certified as an Advanced Practice Social Worker. The Respondent worked as a psychotherapist at Sheboygan County Health and Human Services. On May 15, 2008 to July 29, 2009 Ms. Morter provided individual psychotherapy and case management services to Client T.R. On July 18, 2009 Ms. Morter was out of town, and the Sheboygan Police Department was notified of a burglary attempt at Ms. Morter’s home. The officers found Client T.R. in Ms. Morter’s driveway, attempting to operate her vehicle. Ms. Morter was contacted by the police, and she claimed she did not give Client T.R. permission to be there. Client T.R. was arrested by Sheboygan Police (Wisconsin Department of Regulation and Licensing, 2012).

For axis I, which is categorized as clinical disorders, I was diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder) as a young child. I recall taking medication for numerous years before my symptoms became less severe. There are times when I, and my loved ones, can tell that I start to loose concentration, and it takes a while to get back. The second and third axises are reserved for Personality disorders and mental retardation, and any general medical conditions. The main purpose for an evaluation is for feedback. Different professionals have different forms or other means of evaluation for their patient/clients. Below is a link for a social worker performance evaluation conducted by the Lower Kuskikwim School Distrist of Bethel, Alaska.

For purposes of this proposal, we have focused on client data for the first five (5) months of 2017. The basis of the data was the information provided in billing spreadsheets submitted to the County. Therefore, non-billable events have been excluded. Prior to the current contract period which began January 1, 2016, the Therapeutic Mentoring program was significantly larger. Consequently, use of program averages from those periods could be misleading.

Case management services were provided through an FTM (family team meeting) in the youth's home. Present at the meeting were WYP (Wraparound Youth Partner) Andy Ngo, WPP (Wraparound Parent Partner) Natalie Krag, WCC (Wraparound Care Coordinator) Quoc Tran, the youth's father, the youth's mother, and the youth. The meeting started with the positives and the successes. The mother got a haircut, the family spent Thanksgiving together, the youth is doing his chores, and the youth's behaviors is better during winter break. Social workers should continuously strive to better their practice to be competent and efficient practitioners. One practice evaluation strategy I would consider for this population is the use of client feedback through self-report measures. Upon successful completion of therapy, I would ask the clients to provide feedback as well as fill out a survey in regards to what they learned, what they desire to learn more about, any issues they had and constructive feedback in order to improve my practice. I would do this because I believe each individual client takes away something different and each of these veterans knows what they need and what worked for them. A variable is an independent variable when it is believed to affect or alter status on another variable. The independent variable is referred to as treatment or intervention and is symbolized with letter X. Conversely, a variable is a dependent variable when status on the variable seems to depend on stats on another variable. The dependent variable is considered as the outcome of treatment and is symbolized with the letter Y.

A social worker is obligated to report suspected abuse or neglect of a vulnerable adult as under section 42 of Care Act 2014 safeguarding regulations this is a reasonable cause for a Local Authority to conduct an enquiry (Care Act, 2014c.23:P1:s42). Hence, even when working with family carers, social workers remain vigilant as according to Age UK (2016) 50 vulnerable people per hour are abused or neglected within their own home by people known to them. Accountability could explain social workers’ preference to undertake the assessments of both carer and who they care for at the same time. Joint working has two functions; incorporating and addressing the carer’s needs in the disabled plan (Alzheimer’s Society, 2016) and clarifying discrepancies, like those which may cause alarm (Knapp and Hewison, 1999). In addition, joint assessments incorporates and addresses the carer’s needs in the disabled person’s plan (). Likewise, Campbell Reay and Browne (2001) state that in-depth knowledge of the carers’ history and current lifestyle must be an essential part of the assessment process as it could highlight some aspect which potentially puts vulnerable people at risk of harm.

In order to deliver good case management services case managers, need to start off with building rapport and trust relationships with the client who is seeking available services. Major clientele where case management approaches occur is when case managers interact with individuals and families dealing with complex circumstances. Therefore, there is a need for a large knowledge base in order to deliver appropriate services the client needs. As a case manager it is important to know that every client is different and there is a need for different skills when implementing intervention plans. One of the roles of case managers is to match client’s needs, as accurate as possible to available services. In order to achieve or meet the needs of clients, case managers conduct an intervention process that helps identify the client’s needs, strengths and weaknesses as well as identify their goals. Generally, this is done in stages where the case manager begins to establish a helping relationship and where informal or formal rules are agreed (Keegan, R 2015, pg.71). At this stage good case management services do not assume or ignore any detail of the client’s story or issue. They begin to determine the eligibility of the client, their emergence and build rapport in order to
