Evaluating Social Work

Good Essays

Social workers should always evaluate their work, as this helps them to assess the areas that are working in their practice and what areas could be improved upon. Social workers can evaluate their own practice, the efficacy of a program, or how their agency is doing. However, there are a multitude of different ways that social works can evaluate their practice and work. During my internship at Wright County Health and Human Services, I chose to evaluate the children’s mental health outreach program. I made a spreadsheet on excel with the two different labels: where the referrals came from and the type of contact made. Lastly, I indicated whether the cases were transferred for ongoing children’s mental health case management. The tool I used was simply keeping track of the referrals that were received from the beginning of January to the first week of March. I kept this timeline because I wanted to ensure that I had enough referrals to measure the results. The variables that were used in this evaluation were: where the referrals came from, type of contact made, and whether the referral transferred to the children’s mental health unit for case management. While in our research class, we learned about independent and dependent variables. Independent variables are variables that affect the dependent variables (McLeod, 2008). Whereas, the dependent variable, is the variable the researcher wants to measure, thus changes to the independent variable affect the dependent variable (McLeod, 2008). Regarding this research evaluation, the independent variables are where the referrals came from and type of contact made. Whereas the dependent variable, is whether the cases transferred to children’s mental health case management. Per the results of my evaluation, where the referrals come from and the type of contact made certainly contributes to if a case will be opened for children’s …show more content…

First, no cases opened for children mental health case management where the parents and/or guardians were contacted via letter. Therefore, it is evident that phone contact has the most significant impact on whether parents and/or guardians will receive mental health case management services for their child. Another trend is that the referrals that were received from law enforcement or child protection had a zero percent chance of opening for children’s mental health case management. This was not surprising, as most families that may have child protection or law enforcement involvement typically do not want the county to intervene in their lives. Lastly, referrals that came from the parents and/ or guardians themselves had over a fifty percent chance of opening for children’s mental health case management. Again, this was not surprising because if the parents are contacting the county, they typically want these services in place for their child. Overall, these were the results of my research. Additionally, there are some apparent trends that are evident by completing this research
