Final Essay- Events before World War I World War 1, one of the biggest wars in history, did not begin because of one problem; it was a mixture of many different factors that eventually caused the final outcome. This war was so great because it basically included all of Europe. As we look back to the events that led up to the war, we see that one country looks like they are the cause of most of the problems; this country was Germany. Because of their great obsession with gaining power, they will make many enemies and finally fall into their own demise. In the years before the war, around 1848-1914, the period of Nationalism began, where each country was unifying their states. These states wanted national identity, meaning …show more content…
By 1912, the Balkin Wars occurred between the new Balkin states. They were minor wars, more like attacks. During that time they were all going through a sense of nationalism, or self- determination. Every little nation was determining their political and economic futures. These "wars" only lasted for about a year. On 1914, June 28 the big incident that sparked World War I occurred. Franz Ferdinand, the crowned prince and heir to the Austrian throne, and the princess Sophie, were traveling around the new little states. While in the capital of Bosnia, Sarajevo, Prince Franz was assassinated by the "Black Hand". Bosnia was originally annexed to Austria-Hungary, but the Serbs were also still upset, so they created a group called the "Black Hand", a anti-Austrian military group of "terrorists/ Freedom fighters". Even though the assassination occurred in Bosnia, the Austrians wanted to declare war on Serbia, but they couldn't yet because Russia would help Serbia and attack. So instead on June 29, Austria issues an ultimatum to Serbia. Serbia was given 10 points on the ultimatum that they had to do in 48 hours. Serbia actually filled out 9 out of the 10 points. This would have been good enough of it wasn't for Wilheim instigating the problem. Wilheim backed Austria-Hungaary with a "blank check", basically pressuring them to go to war. These finances and support for Austria, ended up making Austria

One other major problem which triggered the events of world war one was the fight for imperial power. The British Empire was huge by 1900; Britain owned a quarter of the world. Huge amounts of money were made from these colonies and Britain had a powerful military presence in all parts of the world. The Empire was seen as the status symbol of a country that was the most powerful in the world. Countries that were not part of the British Empire such as Germany and Austria were almost jealous of its power and wanted more land for their country. This is how the fight for imperial power began. Countries started to invade others and build more resources and focus on the numbers of their armies and navies. Making sure theirs
Nationalism is thought to be one of the causes of WW1. Nationalism is referred to as devotion and loyalty to
Many contributions lead to the spark of World War I. The three main causes included the assassination of Francis Ferdinand, alliance systems, and militarism. Although imperialism and nationalism are said to be contributing factors to the cause of World War I, the assassination of Francis Ferdinand, alliance systems, and militarism were three of the most important causes of The Great War. An immediate cause of World War I was the assassination of Austria-Hungary’s archduke, Francis Ferdinand.
This concept leads to the assassination of Austria’s archduke, Franz Ferdinand. This single event is known as the spark of World War I. Serbia wanted independence and freedom from Austria-Hungary. A Serbian nationalist by the name of Gavrilo Princep assassinated the archduke and his wife as they drove by him in a car. The Black Hand, a Serbian nationalist group, orchestrated the attack, causing Austria to declare war on Serbia who was backed by the Russians. Russia, who secretly wanted to have control over Serbia, claimed be motivated by Pan Slavism. Pan Slavism is essentially Slavic nationalism, or the belief that all Slavs should support each other. According to Document 3, Austria-Hungary then made many demands for Serbia to comply with. Serbia accepted almost all demands, but this was not acceptable to Austria-Hungry, who declared war on Serbia soon after. The rest of the European Powers followed due to the Alliance system. Another event, called the Moroccan crisis, also lead to the outbreak of World War I. Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany publicly declared his support for Morocco, angering of France and Britain. The visit was intended to serve as a demonstration that Germany would back Morocco against French expansion. Great Britain and France were extremely angry over what they considered to be their business. Germany had to take most of the blame for World War I as a condition of the Versailles Treaty. According to Document 4, the Treaty forced Germany to pay all reparations for the war and limit it’s boundaries and military size. Germany resented the Treaty and the countries involved. This would eventually lead to the Second World War. Russia left World War I to focus more on internal conflict (revolution). As Russia left the conflict, the United States was pulled into it. The Zimmerman telegram was a secret telegram sent from Germany asking Mexico to enter the war to weaken

At first, Europeans wanted a balanced power, but then alliance started to form. An assassination happened and soon Europe was at war. However, there are numerous causes of World War that are not commonly known which include nationalism, militarism, and alliance.
Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism, and Nationalism played a huge part in the led up to World War 1. With the threat of war hanging over the heads of many countries, the Arms Race began. Germany, France, and Russia started to recruit a large portion of their male population. This gave the men a taste of war and the military experience. The Arms Race caused every European state have access to a huge army, but these armies ere ruining their economics. The citizens knew that they needed to rid of themselves of these armies before they went into economic ruin, but before this could happen they were propelled into war. Germany created a large, modern navy that threatened Britain. At the time of this threat, Germany was trying to secure Britain
World war 1 brought catastrophe to countries around the world. Leading to the economic depression, the rise of authoritarian leaders, problems with Germany due to the Versailles treaty, and many other outcomes that in fact eventually led to WW2. As you may or may not know WW1 was the 1st war that included countries from all around the world. It was supposed to be the “war to end all wars”. False. later in time came WW2 and many other small wars throughout history. The real question is what were the reasons why world war 1 flourished? 3 main reasons include nationalism, imperialism and militarism. All these are fundamental causes of WW1.
Nationalistic ego on part of Europe as a whole boiled Ferdinand’s assassination into action, pushing Europe into war. “[Serbia] has done nothing to suppress these[rebellious] movements”(Doc 3). Austria-Hungary had no compassion to the thoughts of the Serbian citizens while they ruled over them, only thinking of more territory they could dominate, and in turn, terrorist groups like The Black Hand, sprouted and eventually were successful in their mission. However, Austria-Hungary and Serbia were not alone in blame. The entirety of Europe were imperializing areas in Africa, Asia, and North America. Due to their land conquests, much of Europe was zealously fighting over who would get what area. No one stood up to be the bigger man
Second, After The Black Hands had killed Franz Ferdinand The Black Hands thought a rebellion would happen when in reality, this lead to a chain reaction/domino effect. This lead to Austria-hungary declaring war on Serbia while war was declared on Serbia, Russia had an alliance with Serbia, Russia declared war on Austria-Hungary due to the alliance they made. While Russia declared war on Austria-Hungary, Germany helped out Austria-Hungary due to the alliance they had also made. After war was declared on Russia, France also had an alliance with them so they declared war on Germany. This all happened in a few days keep in mind, although Britain had nothing to do at all they sided with france in hopes of ending this war sooner. But in reality
Throughout history there has been competition for resources and domination. This competition has led to conflicts that have caused destruction, social disruptions and death. World War I was no exception to this competition. World War I was known as the war to end all wars and was caused by a combination of factors. Some causes of World War I was nationalism, imperialism, militarism, and the main cause which was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand by Gavrilo Princip of Serbia. While the United States attempted to remain neutral and stay out of the war, Germany choose actions that gave the U.S. no choice but to enter and help their Allies defeat the other powers.
Before World War 1 began there were many conflicts between many countries, these conflicts are what eventually led to the war. Nationalism lead to World War 1 for reasons people believed they needed to fight for their country, many people who weren’t fighting wanted to support their soldiers, and many soldiers felt as if they couldn’t back out of the war. Militarism was a cause because each country was building up their weapons and ammunition, as well as building up their armies. Finally Kaiser Wilhelm II was a cause because he had a very strong hate towards Britain, he was a very aggressive leader and he wanted Germany to be the number one country. Nationalism, militarism and Kaiser Wilhelm II were the three main causes of World War 1.
Nationalism created a rallying point for the
Nationalism is pride for ones country. The tensions in the Balkans played a large role in the tensions that lead to world war 1. The tensions started when Serbia had a rise in nationalism and wanted to break free politically and economically from the Austro-Hungarian empire. From this point Serbia had Russia as an allie.
