Final Essay- Events before World War I World War 1, one of the biggest wars in history, did not begin because of one problem; it was a mixture of many different factors that eventually caused the final outcome. This war was so great because it basically included all of Europe. As we look back to the events that led up to the war, we see that one country looks like they are the cause of most of the problems; this country was Germany. Because of their great obsession with gaining power, they will make many enemies and finally fall into their own demise. By 1912, the Balkin Wars occurred between the new Balkin states. They were minor wars, more like attacks. During that time they were all going through a sense of nationalism, or self- determination. Every little nation was determining their political and economic futures. These "wars" only lasted for about a year. On 1914, June 28 the big incident that sparked World War I occurred. Franz Ferdinand, the crowned prince and heir to the Austrian throne, and the princess Sophie, were traveling around the new little states. While in the capital of Bosnia, Sarajevo, Prince Franz was assassinated by the "Black Hand". Bosnia was originally annexed to Austria-Hungary, but the Serbs were also still upset, so they created a group called the "Black Hand", a anti-Austrian military group of "terrorists/ Freedom fighters". Even though the assassination occurred in Bosnia, the Austrians wanted to declare war on Serbia, but they couldn't yet because Russia would help Serbia and attack. So instead on June 29, Austria issues an ultimatum to Serbia. Serbia was given 10 points on the ultimatum that they had to do in 48 hours. Serbia actually filled out 9 out of the 10 points. This would have been good enough of it wasn't for Wilheim instigating the problem. Wilheim backed Austria-Hungaary with a "blank check", basically pressuring them to go to war.
