Every morning I wake up at the last minute. I press snooze from the moment my alarm goes off at 6:50 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. I go to bed early, but I can’t seem to get enough sleep. Teens are supposed to sleep for at least eight to nine hours every night. Having school start at 8:30 a.m. doesn’t help because teens like me have to work at night. After work I get home late and have homework to do before school the next morning, which keeps me up past midnight sometimes. Studies show that even getting a half an hour more of sleep improves children’s learning ability from eighteen to forty-four percent (School Really). If school started a little later each morning it would give students not only more time to eat, but give them time to actually be awake. Eating breakfast has been proven to improve teenager’s test scores. Those who eat breakfast are also more productive and get better grades than those who skip breakfast, besides, those who skip get distracted easier because their stomach is constantly growling throughout school. Another issue with schools starting early is that many tired students have to drive long lengths to school. Driving while tired can be just as fatal as drinking and driving. I know I have a hard time driving just a mile to school in the morning when i’m tired from not getting enough sleep. Sleepiness slows people’s reaction time and impairs judgement while driving (Facts). 2.3 percent of crashes that have injured people was caused by driving while drowsy. 1.3 percent were fatal crashes from drowsy driving. Starting school later could decrease these numbers by a lot (Drowsy Driving). Don’t get me wrong, there are some good things about school starting early. One of the things that is good about school starting early is it teaches teenagers how to get ready for their future.
