Constant changes of feelings between characters can be identified all throughout literature. In the short story “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker, feelings between Mama and Dee create a monotonous battle of emotions. The way Dee dishonors her family takes a toll on the relationship she has with her mother. When Dee comes home from college, she immediately begins blustering about what she thinks she should derive from her family’s heritage. She eventually rants so much that it causes hard feelings to come between her and her mother. Mama becomes extremely discontented with Dee’s behavior as she tries to calmly explain that some heritage has already been promised to her younger sister Maggie. Dee’s behavior begins to take a toll on Mama’s emotions. Mama begins to feel disrespected and unappreciated. On the other hand, Dee feels as if she is better than everyone and that she has ascendancy in every situation. As the story goes on, Mama and Dee grow further and further apart and Mama begins to feel a great amount of disappointment in Dee and her behavior. Mama’s reaction to Dee’s obnoxious behavior has a huge effect on the story’s outcome. Dee’s disrespectful actions towards her mother and her family’s heritage have quite a big impact on the story’s conclusion. At the end of the story, the family disputes continue to remain unsolved as Dee drives off in a cloud of dust. In the midst of all the chaos Maggie, Dee’s younger sister, finally discovers who she really is and stands up to her older sister who has always belittled her. In the end, Mama is partially thankful that things worked out like they did. Conclusively, she is proud of herself and Maggie for finally standing up for their selves and their family’s
