In literature, symbols are usually reoccurring and are usually used to define something else. In Everyman, a play written to show the death of people, Everyman goes on a journey to find anyone who is willing to be his companion on his journey to death. He asks many other characters, who are symbols of his life, to come with him, but he slowly finds out that they will not go with him. In Everyman, Death is a symbol that reveals the true nature of all the other character that Everyman talks to and emphasizes the story’s theme. In the beginning, Everyman finds out that his friends and family are not what they appear to be. (Lines 800-850) Although they do not represent other humans, they still abandon Everyman in his time of need even though they had promised to stay with him through the journey. “Nay, Everyman, I will abide with thee, I will not forsake thee indeed; Thou shalt find me a good friend at need.” (Lines 853-855) However, Good Deeds, the only character who doesn’t forsake him, keeps her promise to stay with him through his journey. Symbols in literary works can express an idea, clarify meaning, or enlarge literal meaning. Symbols can appear in a novel as an event, action, or object. In Their Eyes Were Watching God, the author, Zora Neale Hurston, uses the symbols of the gate to show Janie’s transitions to womanhood, independence from oppression, and realization of what love is to Janie.
2009. A symbol is an object, action, or event that represents something or that creates a range of associations beyond itself. In literary works a symbol can express an idea, clarify meaning, or enlarge literal meaning. Analyze a symbol in George Orwell's 1984, and write an essay demonstrating how that symbol functions in the work and what it reveals about the characters or themes of the work as a whole. Do not merely summarize the plot.
Poets have often used symbols to convey deeper messages that they were either too afraid or felt that normal language lacked the power to express. Often when a symbol is used, the reader digs deeper into the issue more than if the message was simply shot out in the open. These symbols and metaphors can be used to portray beautiful things, or could be used to create a more compelling argument in a more subtle way.
Symbols are used to represent something else deeper than the actual meaning either in real life or in literature. In the story “The Scarlet Ibis”, Doodle who is mentally and physically disabled was not expected to live. Although, he did live, however, he could not do things other children could do such as walk or talk. Therefore, his older brother set out to teach him because he was embarrassed to have an abnormal brother. However, many years later Doodle is soon overworked until he can no longer go on, and he sadly dies. In “The Scarlet Ibis”, James Hurst uses the caul, the oriole nest, and the blood od Doodle as symbols to offer greater insight into abstract ideas that are difficult to understand on their own.
According to Wikipedia, a symbol is a mark, sign, or word that indicates, signifies, or is understood as representing an idea, object, or relationship. Symbols allow us to go beyond what is known or seen by creating links between concepts and experiences. They help create a better understanding of the plot, theme, or characters in literature. For example, Lord of the Flies, by William Golding consists of several symbols. The novel is about a group of British boys who are stranded on an island with nothing but their knowledge of human civilization. They try to create a society of their own, but it begins to subside as they descend into savagery. Symbols like the conch, the beast, or the painted masks help reveal their true nature. However, the most important symbol is the fire. Golding uses the fire to paradoxically represent savagery, destruction and most significantly hope of rescue. He describes the fire as technology that menaces destruction if it gets out of control, yet ironically it also symbolizes the boys’ connection to human civilization.
Each symbol is used to build a way of foreshadowing the journey from the once overruled society of technology and the lack of independent thought to the rebirth and reflection into a positive human-focused society. There are numerous symbols used in this novel, some tie into each other as well.

Symbols are secret messages that are embedded in the texts of literature. Some symbols are more well-known and better understood than others. Authors use symbols to tell how they are feeling (Overview). The symbols in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe are very different; however, they are still very important throughout both pieces of literature.

Symbolism is a literary technique that is used to clarify the author's intent. Sometimes it is used to great effect, while other times it only seems to muddle the meaning of a passage. In "Young Goodman Brown," Nathaniel Hawthorne uses objects and people as symbols to allegorically reveal his message to the reader.
One of many important literary devices is symbols, which bring deeper meaning to otherwise unimportant items. In Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, we see very distinct symbols which help us better understand the points Miller is trying to get across. One of the many important symbols
Symbols unlock the secrets of a story. Hawthorne, in The Scarlet Letter, uses many symbols to represent different things. Some symbols represent the same thing. The letter “A” has many meanings, each character has their own meanings, and even the different parts of nature are symbols. Also, apart from providing structure for the novel, each scaffold scene conveys something different. One could say, arguably, that nearly everything in The Scarlet Letter is a symbol for something else.
Dutchman written by Amiri Baraka is a perfect example of how race can play in important part in how you are perceived. In this story a powerful middle-aged white women tries to seduce a younger aged African-American man that presented himself as intelligent and well dressed. This play was written during a time when our world was very closed minded about race specifically with those who were of color. In the early 1960’s white was the major race and white americans were who were superior to those of color. Later on in the 1960’s is when African-Americans started to fight for full and equal rights. They wanted to not be used or treated as if they were not humans. Majority of African-American families were lower class and poor because that is how society viewed and valued them. If you were not white you did not mean anything or have anything of value. Usually they were slaves for white families and were told to do as they instructed. This provoked for the Civil Rights Movement. That eventually lead to African-Americans having the same privileges as Whites. Now many years later we would think racism and discrimination does not happen but it does daily. Tying all this together was a play called Dutchman. Which is a strong play that expresses race and how racism is the dominate trait in the story and also stereotyping african americans.
Throughout the play, numerous characters are introduced. What is unique concerning the characters is that most of them do not have individual personalities. ‘Everyman’ and ‘God’ are the only main characters that are not just moral personalities. Death is one of the first on the scene, and tells everyman “I am sent to thee rom God out of his majesty” (Everyman line 90-91). Everyman appears to be confused as to why death would be sent to him. Shortly after this, death states to everyman “For before God thou shalt answer, and show thy many bad deeds, and good but a few” (Everyman line 107-108). This demonstrates that the author views a time of
