In furtherance of our patient safety culture at Baycare Health System, our management team and the physician's group have embarked on numerous approach to solidify the patient's safety culture at our organization. These approaches include the initiation of the patient safety portal, the implementation of the Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) system, and the implementation of the Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS)/ Evidence Based Medicine (EBM). The projected change will employ the use of the SMRC model of change communication. The SMCR model highlighted the necessary ingredients in transmitting an effective message that meets the sender’s objectives as the primary links in the communication process, and the receivers as the final link in the communication process. In order for communication to be effective, a careful consideration must be observed, first, the sender must carefully examine the purpose of the intended communication (for example, to persuade or to educate the receiver). The next step is the message composition that involves a careful selection of the appropriate code source of the message, in most instance the code is the language the message is encoded and that can be decoded by the receiver; if the message is not carefully encoded, the intended purpose of the message can be lost. Staying with the status quo affords these physicians the ability to keep up with their busy workload, and this group of physicians might argue that implementing such system will increase the amount work or interfere with their workflow process. Moreover, most of the older doctors are not computer literate. Thus, the idea of implementing a computerized order entry system might be met with brute resistance. Organization barrier: Due to astronomical cost that can be associated with the implementation/upgrading current computer system, resistance might stem from the administrative team as well. Implementing new or upgrading information system required a long term financial commitment, and the return of on invested might not be visible in the near future. Additionally, organization barriers are complex, and it will require redesigning the entire workflow process of the entire healthcare organization.
