Introduction
Evidence Based Practice (EBP) is a relatively new concept in the history of nursing practice. It is the process of which information is researched and documented on why something is done in a specific way. It also takes into consideration the preferences of patients and clients. One of the earliest definitions of EBP is, “the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients. The practice of evidence-based medicine means integrating individual clinical expertise with the best available external clinical evidence from systematic research” (Sackett, et al, 1996, p71) EBP ensures that all health care professionals have the relevant knowledge and skills to work safely and efficiently with patients and be able to explain the reason behind the care given by them. Within nursing practice EBP is accomplished by developing and supporting a person-centred approach to care using the most current evidence. This helps take into consideration the four main principles of healthcare ethics which are beneficence, non-maleficence, autonomy and justice. (Emanual V et al, 2011).
