“The evil is not that you cannot change human nature. The evil is that human nature cannot change you.” Barrows Dunham couldn’t have said it better . This quote and book helps support my theme. My theme states the truth about this country, human nature is evil. They first came to the island with a different perspective and ended up leaving with a whole different view of life. Just like famous people do bad things don't make it ok . The only difference between famous people and us is they had the room to do it. And they also have the money to do it. But mainly even famous people have consequences. People make things repetitive because they want to be cool and follow other person to fit in . Be different and you will fit in just fine. There’s always going to be bad influences around you the real challenge is can you stay true to yourself. I’m speaking from personal experiences It happens to everyone, it’s a stage that you want to do what everyone do.With this intention , in the Lord of the Flies , William Golding uses the symbols of the mask, the fire, and the Beast to demonstrate the savagery and my theme that human nature is evil. The mask hides his identity under a mask. The mask help release evil and savagery to the boys. In my opinion The mask is a bad influence to the boys. This how they were introduced to the savagery and all the evil. Which also in my opinion they didn't need any help with the bad influence the island , did enough damage. Their parents shouldn’t have let them go to any island that they didn’t know about. Let alone leave them at a island by their self . They basically set them up for bad things to happen.Ralph insist that the last fire ,will get them rescued from the island. Results show that they failed when a ship passed them. In chapter 5 ralph states that the fire is the most important thing "smoke is more important than the
The boys have never had signs of savage behavior until on the island so the situation they were put in made them act that
There is many examples of differences and similarities of good vs. evil between these boys. At the end of the day these were very young boys put into a horrendous situation that most adults couldn't even handle. Human nature came out in these boys and they just handled it in many different ways but also in many similar ways. I believe their behavior on the island really stemmed from their lives away from the island and their maturity levels for sure. Maybe think about what would be dangerous for you on an island now and if you would succumb to
When the boys first explore the island, it seems to be a paradise. There are “palm trees...coconuts...shimmering water...the lagoon was still...with blue of all shades” (Golding 9-10), and everything the boys can see is beautiful and calm. Best of all, there are no grown-ups, leaving the boys with freedom to do whatever they like. This island is an allusion to the Garden of Eden, the biblical paradise
The boys created their own society on the island, which means they made their own rules, they followed them for awhile but eventually broke all of them. Like when they found the conch, “ We can use this to call the others, have a meeting, they’ll come when they hear us (pg. 16. Golding).” They made a rule that when the conch is sounded they are to all come to a specific place to have a meeting. “ Whats your name?” “ Johnny (pg. 18
These boys have been on this isolated island for such an undefined amount of time that as a reader, it can only be assumed that some of these characters have lost much of their sanity and have grown into a lifestyle of savagery. At first, they claim that they will never become savages, for they are British, and the British are the beast at everything, or so they claim. The longer the boys remain on the island, the more fear of the beastie and the growth of the potential of the war between Ralph and Jack, the more savage and display of brutality and slavery, the boy's sense of morality and civility is completely gone. Their innocence goes along with it. They are no longer little church boys – but brutal savage beings completely misguided by an even more brutal fascist like leader.
Since they had no supervision, they were free of boundaries, making a lot more trouble and arguments. The boys who crashed/landed weren't given any rules to follow, so they acted freely without caution. Also, the plane crash represents a scar on the island, creating a great form of
What must be remembered is that there is always violence when there are savages and there is a lot of arguing and fighting and even some killing between the boys on the island because they are becoming more and more like savages due to their environment and circumstance of how they got there in the in the first place. This is fundamentally why when the boys
The boys, after being on the island for some time, are slipping into savagery. Golding comments on this in Chapter 5, during the boys’ meeting, writing, “The world, that understandable and lawful world, was slipping away.” (Golding, 91). The boys are amidst an argument at this point, and they are acting uncivilized and crazy towards each other. This is one of the first times we see the boys as the savages they truly are.
Everybody is born with evil and sin within them, it becomes conspicuous when nobody is there to enforce laws and morals and understanding. This is an undeniable concept in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, where multifarious boys landed and were stuck on an island with no adult authority. At the beginning these boys followed societies common rules, but that was destined to change. Jack and the hunters soon turned vicious and Ralph, the main chief, lost all control; rescue was not the main concern anymore, boys started dying, fire got out of control, and these boys did not realize that the evil was within them and there was no beast to begin with. All humans have potential to be evil, and when left unchecked by morals and laws of society,
The Lord of the Flies proves that humans are inherently evil, and strict adherence to laws and rules are the only way that humans can escape from this evil. Golding proves this through the actions of Jack, Ralph’s decent in to savagery, and the fate of Simon. The novel proves that humans are inherently evil through the actions of Jack Merridew. Jack is one of the older boys on the Island.
Ralph starts out making the island seem fun, that this is a grand adventure they’re on. But he also believes that they need rules and order, so they don’t become savages and forget who they are. This is why he uses the conch to create order and a system of rules. Ralph becomes leader and starts giving people jobs and making a fire become the most important thing. He wants to be rescued and is trying to get them off the island as fast as possible. “While we’re waiting we can have a good time on this island… It’s like a book.” Ralph is trying to make light of a bad situation and making the island seem like a utopia that the boys can explore. In life people do this all the time, they sugar coat the truth to make it seem like it’s better that it is or fun when in
It was a surprise that the majority of the boys were found healthy with no survival or hunting skills. But unfortunately, we have been told that some boys are presumed dead but the cause for their deaths are still unknown. We have interviewed many of the victims such as Ralph and he has told us the difficulties faced throughout the island such as lack of food and shelter. “Jack and Ralph were best friends but the island turned them into enemies and Jack became blood thirsty to kill Ralph” said Eric. Numerous other boys had told that they had lost all hope of rescue and they were planning to stay on the island till the day they die. These young schoolboys were on the island for a very short time, but due to the dark memories of the island, this is a tragedy that these young schoolboys will never
The island’s description over time illustrates the evil mankind brings. Straight away, the boys bring a scar onto
Theme Development The theme of my novel is that nobody is truly evil, but there is darkness in everyone. This theme is developed through Aiden’s character. In the beginning of the novel, he is not his own person. Instead, he is completely controlled by his father and his desire to regain his favor.
When coming up with my mask idea, the first thing that came to mind was that I wanted to correlate the mask with how the children acted. The way I decided to do this was to create a mask that showed degradation over time. The left half of the mask shows before the children lost order, and the right side shows after the children lost any sense of leadership and civilization. Every single thing on the mask has a meaning.
