History Made! 2017 Gents Baseball Turn in Remarkable Season
It was quite the season for the Diamond Gents in 2017. And it all started with Centenary picked to barely make the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament. In a preseason vote of the head coaches of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, Centenary baseball was picked for the fourth and final spot of the Conference Tournament.
However, Perfect Game were not fooled. Ranked 24th to begin the start of the season, the Gents turned in a truly remarkable season and rose to as high as sixth, according to the American Baseball Coaches Association.
Centenary finished 35-10 overall and 15-3 in the SCAC, winning the Conference Regular Season title for the third time in the

While, Centenary lost the final two games, it was still the second-most successful season in terms of wins in program history.
While the team accomplishments were amazing, the individual accolades were astounding. Chris Zapata was named First Team All-American as a catcher (essentially being named the best catcher in the country) by both the ABCA and D3baseball.com. The SCAC Player of the Year led the nation with 71 RBI’s in 45 games, also leading the SCAC in hits (70), doubles (17), home runs (12), and slugging percentage (.622). What might be the most impressive; however, may be that Zapata was behind the dish as a catcher for all but 18 of the 365.2 innings of defense Centenary played.
However, Zapata only ranked second on the team with a .395 average because of teammate Michael Schimpf. Schimpf became only the second player in SCAC history to lead the conference in batting average in consecutive season. Besides being named All-American by d3Baseball.com, Schimpf excelled in the classroom as well. In May 2017, he became the first player to be named First Team Academic AllAmerican by the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). It is also believed he became the first athlete in Centenary’s history to win the prestigious NCAA Post Graduate Scholarship Award.
To focus on just those two players would be a disservice to a starting line-up where
About three weeks ago, the Packer Varsity baseball team beat Berkeley Carroll school for the first time in twelve years and in glorious fashion. Tears streamed down my face as our winning run crossed the plate in extra innings, dust flying up as my teammates and I mobbed each other at the plate. Yet a few short days later, our team was blindsided by the news that St. Ann’s had pulled off back to back upsets to squeak their way into the playoffs ahead of us - just as our season seemed to be looking up, it was over.
and followed that season up in 1916 where he went 23-12 and leading the league with a 1.75
After another weekend where the Gents swept an SCAC opponent, Centenary rose in all three polls. The American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate News poll moved the Maroon and White up to eighth from 12th, while Perfectgame (The only poll to have Centenary ranked all season) moved the Gents up a spot to 10th. Note: These polls do
The Gents played a closer game then they are used to in the series finale, but the Maroon and White never trailed in the series as Centenary (16-3, 3-0 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) swept a doubleheader with a 12-0 win (seven innings) in game one and 9-6 in game two.
Zapata earned Second Team All-Conference for the second-straight season. He leads the team in RBI’s (39), doubles (15) and home runs (four). Zapata’s .325 batting average sits fourth on the team this season. He easily leads the conference from behind the dish in runner caught stealing percentage (40.9) in the SCAC.
“This team will probably go down in history maybe as one of the best ever for what we accomplished this year,” WVU head coach Randy Mazey said. “I think our guys showed a lot of heart, a lot of tenacity and there are Mountaineer fans everywhere super proud of our team. We made a lot of Mountaineer baseball fans that weren’t Mountaineer baseball fans prior to this year. This is a statement about our program, where it’s going and the direction it’s headed. We’ve got us a baseball program that we can be super proud of. We have a great facility, great administration and great fan support. This is not the end. This is the beginning of a great baseball program.”
Joining Aldridge on the Honorable Mention All-Conference list is Sexton and Tasin, who both made All-Conference last season. Sexton ranks third in the SCAC in stolen bases (25) and fourth in runs scored (38). Tasin finished third in the conference in hits (54) and fifth in the conference with a .412 batting average, including beginning the season with a 16-game hitting streak.
The first three Gents in game two loaded the bases, and sophomore Chris Zapata blasted the first pitch he saw into the batter’s eye in centerfield to break the career record for RBI’s as Centenary (34-18) run-ruled Trinity (28-16) 13-3 to win the 2017 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Championship Sunday afternoon, April 30 at AirHogs Stadium in Grand Prairie, Texas.
Some highlights of the regular season: “Harvey Ellsworth won the league scoring title,” recalled Verbeski. “And you’ve got to give credit where credit is due, Blair Joseph was named MVP of the league. Xavier goaltender Greg MacSween from New Waterford was voted outstanding goaltender. He kept his team in many, many
“Baseball is the only field of endeavor where a man can succeed three times out of ten, and be considered a good performer.” - Ted Williams. When referring to all time greats in the world of baseball you will hear about the likes of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Ted Williams, Hank Aaron, Jackie Robinson, and Ernie Banks. None of these men have the most hits in baseball’s storied history. The man that does, however, is not in the Hall of Fame.
Trailing 5-3 in the sixth inning, freshman Ashlin Roach and senior Brianna Williams doubled and singled to put runners on the corners and end the day for the Centenary starter, Haley Miller. Then, after a foul out, Matulis singled through the left side to make it a one-run game, scoring Roach. Next,
The sophomore literally does it all. He pitches, hits, steals bases and plays all over the field but what makes Zarbnisky special is the fact that he does it all well.
In 2013, the Summerville Bears football program was planning for the future. They put 11 sophomores on the varsity roster, and all of them saw significant playing time. They won two games. In 2014, those 11 players helped lead the Bears to the first round of the Division V Sac-Joaquin Section Championships. Now, those 11 players are seniors and look to use their experience to bring the Mother Lode League Championship back to Tuolumne for the first time since 2009.
SHREVEPORT, La. – For his play this past week in helping Centenary baseball win it’s first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament title, junior Chris Zapata has been named to the D3Baseball.com Team of the Week as a catcher for the second time this season.
