Whales are a popular animal that live in the ocean. There are many different types of whales that have different characteristics. These characteristics may include size, color, prey, etc. The way people may be familiar with whales is Seaworld in Orlando. In 2010, one of the killer whales tragically killed an experienced trainer by the name of Dawn Brancheau. As this story shocked the world, whales are still on display at Seaworld.

The first ancestor of the whale became known to the world 48 million years ago, the Indohyus. It made its living as a four legged mammal that lived on land. Over the evolution period, whales have evolved to not have legs and have adapted to live in the water. Back in time, whales had regular nostrils that they breathed out of. Now, the whale breathes through 2 blowholes on top of their head. When whales come to the top of the water to breathe, they will forcefully shoot out water through their blowhole.

The Indohyus and the modern day whale have the same exact vertical spinal movement. Pakicetus’ and whales both have elongated heads that allows them to feed in the water easier. The Maiacetus was a sea lion-like mammal and spent most of its time underwater and its legs were made for swimming like paddles. Dorudons’ were completely aquatic with reduced hind legs and a flipper like modern day whales have. The Llanocetus had no hind legs and less teeth with the capability of filter feeding like whales eat today.

The first ancestor, the Indohyus, was discovered 48 million years ago. Indohyus’ were 4 legged and lived on land, the complete opposite of the modern day whale. Down the timeline to the Ambulocetus, more evolved whales showed higher levels of saltwater oxygen isotopes. This is important because it shows that they spend way more time in the water than their ancestors. Also, it means they lived in a nearshore marine habitat and were able to drink saltwater like today’s whales are able
