Evolution of Women’s Sports: Annika Sorenstam Strives for Perfection not Feminism

Over the past 50 years, women’s sports have become more prevalent not only in the United States but also across the world. The ability for young girls and women to participate in athletics provides an avenue to experience competitive environments as well as build self-confidence in a world still dominated by men. During the early stages of women’s sports, the main idea was to show that women were worthy of having their own teams and organizations as an extension of the existing men’s sports. In other words, to prove to everyone the women could play many of the same sports that men could play.

Several factors, such as higher education, more equal opportunities, and legislation like Title IX have all contributed to elevation of women’s sports. Most of these factors are directly as a result of the women’s rights movement.

Men have, typically dominated industry as well as sports. However, now that more women are going to college and seeking more advanced degrees, industries such as finance, engineering, medicine, and even law are consequently less skewed in terms of gender. Higher education and legislation are both causes contributing to the effect of more equal opportunities. Title IX is responsible for the creation of most women’s high school and collegiate athletic programs. It provides that in high school, the amount of women’s programs must equal that of the men’s and that in collegiate athletics the amount of scholarships available for women equal that of men’s scholarships. Although there has been recent controversy over how effective Title IX is, it does not cloud how influential it has been in getting women’s collegiate sports off the ground. It seems that many women today are not satisfied with merely a motherly role, but want to do it all and at the highest level.
