A trade union is defined by Smith (2008) as an independent self-regulating organization of workers created to protect and advance the interests of its members through collective action. Trade unions were of course very important once upon a time, but their job has been done. The age of mass production is over. Ultimately, a union is protection. But more than that, a union is an ally and gives support to workers who otherwise are at liberty to the decisions of big companies who often underestimate the needs of those in the working class. Providing strength in numbers, unions are able to fight for fair wages, deserved benefits, a safe working environment, and stability in their scheduling hours and seniority. A union is a friend, a platform, a protector, a voice, and the basis of a strong foundation for everyday workers who are dedicated to providing for themselves and their families.

In this chapter, I learned what labor union means. Labor union is when a group of employees in a workplace that joins together to find ways to positively impact their employment relations. Most people like myself ask why who employees form such union or aren’t it usually the employer that tries to find ways to better the workplace? After reading chapter one, I learn it is necessary for employees to enjoy the job they are doing so they can be satisfied in the workplace. Which makes sense. These organizations grew through the 1800’s and blossomed in the early 1900’s before the world wars. In the beginning it was developed to protect those in skilled trades but today unions protect all those involved with the trade from the janitor, office associate, and beyond. Labor unions throughout history have had a bad connotation to it and there was a time where the unions power was too great. Ultimately, labor unions have benefited labor both public and private.
