I was born in Ecuador, but I have lived most of my life in the United States. To me higher education was an abstract dream due to the increasing tuition cost of universities and limited financial aid available to Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (D.A.C.A) students. I knew where I stood in American society as a D.A.C.A, first-generation and low-income student. Thus, my commitment to work with education-related issues is the result of my personal, academic, and professional journey. It’s my belief that children deserve a quality education regardless of their economic background. For this reason my career goal is to establish an organization that will break barriers and limitations for students in disadvantaged socioeconomic and sociopolitical communities. To successfully undertake this career path, I must further expand my knowledge in education and enhance my problem solving skills in the field of education. The only program that could offer me such opportunity is the Education Management program at King’s College London.
As a D.A.C.A and first-generation, low-income student, I had an 8% and11% chance, respectively, of graduating college. These

In particular, I am interested in learning from Professor Becky Francis, whose research on education inequality I find it fascinating. I was personally captivated by her paper “What would a socially just education system look like?” where Francis and Mills provide not only an analysis of education but also possible principles for a socially just education system. To me the paper mentioned above shows her genuine passion in issues of educational inequality and it constructs alternative solutions for issues in education. Her research was very informative, inspirational and, in my case, relatable to the condition of education in Latin
To pursue as an undergraduate student at Indiana University, I aspire to attend the College of Arts & Science to earn my Bachelor's of Science degree in biology and to ultimately become a cardiologist. Furthermore while being an undergraduate student at IU, I want to be part of the Atkins community and the Hutton Honors College. I mostly want to be part of the Atkins community because I will be able to find other black college students who may share the same similar interests and background that I have. I plan to invest so much time there and to help them flourish, as well of giving back to the black community. Also, I am a very hard working student that excel through their rigorous courses in high school; I want to be surrounded by students who share those same traits while being at Indiana University. Likewise, the Hutton Honors College will also keep my hard working skills sharp and secure. I want to be part of such an intelligent school to endeavor the challenges to become a greater, stronger, and vigorous student.
I am writing to express my interest in serving as a course developer for the College of Health and Human Services at Penn State. I have been developing and teaching courses online since 2005 and have held academic appointments at the University of Pittsburgh, Wayne State University and Virginia Tech. University. I am certified in instructional design through Indiana University and my areas of specialization are social psychology, human development, health and wellness and multi-cultural education.
My interest in education was sparked after reading an article "America's broken bootstraps" by George F. Will. The article and my classes led me to learn more about justice and inequality in the United States and discovering the role education plays in perpetuating the system.
My whole life I have been invested in doing what I love, focusing on my true passions, as well as finding new ones. I have been very involved in my high school, and have been lucky enough to be a part of multiple clubs and activities. Without these activities, my high school experience and life would be a lot different. I have been an active drama club member, a part of ‘Bottlecappers,’ a club advocating anti-drug, alcohol, and bullying to younger students in my district, and many other community service opportunities. I am lucky to have the opportunity to be in these activities, as they have shaped me to be the young adult I am today.
I am writing to express my interest in the biology teaching position at Bard High School Early College (BHSEC). I am currently holding a New York City initial certification in adolescent biology education as well as a Master degree in Biology. I have experience teaching at a high school as well as a college level. I believe that my experience and qualification is a great fit for this position.
Even in my youth, I was concerned about the environment and humanity’s impact upon it. That concern developed into an ardent passion to fix or mitigate the issues we are bringing to our world. Thus my resolution to become an environmental engineer was born. However, most schools do not offer this program, and it has considerably narrowed my options. My search has led me to Rensselaer, the first college to establish an accredited Environmental Engineering program. While visiting Rensselaer, I spoke with an environmental engineer major, and she described her research and internship experiences. She specifically mentioned class lessons devoted to water quality. I have been doing research on this topic for the past two years and find it fascinating. Therefore, I was glad to see that I could use class instruction to build upon my prior knowledge. During
I have chosen Notre Dame as the place I wish to study at as I really believe that the values they instill into each student as they complete their journey here are really valuable and can be implemented later on throughout my life and my career. The amount of clinical practice hours the Nursing students get really appealed to me as I learn best when I’m doing the task hands on. When I first went to have a look around the campus I could see how excited and happy the Notre Dame community and current students were about sharing their own experiences here and they made my first experience incredibly enjoyable and memorable. They encouraged my decisions and fed my passions which was nothing that I had ever experienced before at school.
In my time at Albany University I have had time to mature and pursue my passion for serving people through medicine. One factor that has aspired me to study at Oklahoma State University is their emphasis on serving rural and underserved areas of Oklahoma. I was raised in a rural area of New York and really love the environment and people. One of the best parts about growing up in a rural area is the ability to getting to know everyone in the community personally. In high school I got to see the continuity of our community first hand when two of my fellow classmates passed away tragically. During this time our community came together to help our classmates families by holding fundraisers and holding gatherings to show our support. It was amazing to see continuity of our community during these tough times. Being able to form connection like these is main reason why I wish to support my community wherever it may be through
After seeking a higher education, one is able to move on to the next stages of life peacefully. “One common thread, whether I’m reporting on poverty in New York or Sierra Leone, is that a good education tends to be the most reliable escalator out of poverty. Another common thread: whether in America or Africa, disadvantaged kids often don’t get a chance to board that escalator” (Nicholas D. Kristof). The “escalator out of poverty” indicates that non-affluent students must succeed in the world of academics. Successes that will give them hope to move on to the next stages of life. In addition, one can argue that non-affluent students who succeed in the world of education, epitomizes strong and fearless human beings. These human beings make the world a stronger and powerful place mainly because, they know how to overcome struggles that causes one question the meaning of success in life. Overcoming challenges in life, will allow you to overcome other challenges that you may face later in
I hope to earn a Bachelor of the Arts degree in Psychology, with a focus on social behavioral psychology. The University of Alabama Early College program offers several social behavioral and humanities classes, which I am interested in taking for the experience of college classes, as well as the credit. Specifically, I’m interested in the campus courses of Rhetoric and Society, Ethics/Medical Ethics, Intro to Psychology, and Interpersonal Communication; and the online courses Introduction to Anthropology, Introduction to Criminal Justice, Introduction to Philosophy, and Psychology. By taking early college classes, I prepare myself for college after high school and earn college credit. With several classes eliminated from my future agenda at
I aspire to graduate from Spelman College with a Health Science degree and a Public Health minor. After this step in my academic career, I would like to attend the Morehouse School of Medicine where I would enter into their M.D program. After graduating from Morehouse School of Medicine, I would like to start my residency as an Ob/Gyn. My passion for a career in the medical field stems from a love for the inner-workings of the human body, as well as a desire to advance the care provided to patients. I feel that my passion for towards this field would make me a beneficial asset in the movement towards improving the rate of infant mortality and reducing the rate of complications for mothers.
“Yale is the place that endowed me with the confidence and the grand scope of the world that a young designer needed to excel and make a difference in the real world.” – Yansong Ma. Yale University (M.Arch ’02).
When I close my eyes and imagine my ideal college experience, I see the whole city as my campus, surrounded by peers who are passionate about the arts, and distinguished professors. The advantage of Parsons professors being a distinguished artist who works in New York is that students are able to get real world education, as well as connections for their future. One of the reasons why I applied to Parsons is that the vast amount of professors and lecturers who are connected with the school give students an array of relationships within the New York artistic community. Also, since New York is the heart of art, Parsons has the best resources available.
My experiences with education have allowed me to witness disparities and challenges that underrepresented students face, as education systems are not designed to meet the needs of these scholars. Furthermore, these experiences have further motivated me to address these issues through research and community involvement. I hope to discover new ways in which underrepresented students can be assisted throughout their postsecondary educational journeys, through graduate research at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Ultimately, with a Doctoral Degree focused on Education, I want to conduct transformative research and share this work as faculty at a research-intensive higher education institution.
I am applying for admission to the graduate program in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Carnegie Mellon University. I intend to pursue research in the fields of Signal Processing and Machine Learning. I am particularly interested in working on real world problems and applications which combine concepts from signal processing and machine learning with computational modelling and statistical inference. I am also interested in developing applications of signal and image processing using machine learning methods.
