I was born in a farming family in a small town in southern India. My father worked in the agricultural field for thirty years. He realized while he was working that his children should receive the best education as he had faced many problems due to his illiteracy. This motivated my father to give me the best education without which I couldn’t have come this far. When I finished tenth grade, I had to choose either Mathematics or Biology and I opted for Biology as I had an affinity for science since my childhood. I always stood in the top ten of my class. I pursued my medical education at the distinguished institution, Guntur Medical College. I commenced medical school with the aim of becoming an internist. Through my exposure to the various branches of medicine during my rotations in medical school, I found that I was drawn toward Internal Medicine. The variety of clinical encounters, procedures, and degrees of illness make internal medicine extremely appealing to me. During this period, I was mastered in taking patient history and conducting thorough physical examination. I actively involved myself in interacting and educating patients and their families about their diseases by willingly staying extra …show more content…
Patient interaction, the art of diagnosis, and being able to witness improvement in patients’ conditions helped me to gain hands on experience. I have enjoyed learning from great teachers who taught me to think and who made the process of learning challenging. I particularly remember a 40year old male diabetic patient who suddenly became unconscious in the ward. My initial diagnosis of hypoglycemia was correct and the I.V dextrose given helped the patient recover immediately. The satisfaction one experiences when a patient recovers from a near death to normal state is truly
I decided to pursue medicine while I was attending high school in Kolkata, India and fell in love with biology. I enjoyed engaging with people and developing meaningful relationships. I was looking for a path that would provide me with the skills to help others, both in my home country India and abroad. I felt that medicine can offer me an enriched career with the perfect balance of scientific challenge, intellectual stimulation and personal collection. Surrounded by the Himalayas in West Bengal, India, medical school further inspired my intellectual curiosity and cemented my professional identity.
The biweekly Saturday free clinic was full and overflowing the first time my best friend brought me to the Student for Health organization’s community health clinic. For the next two years, I was ‘hooked on’ the organization’s volunteer health services. It was always exciting to come and help with the health screening services. We screened mostly for chronic conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity. I was always curious to know the fate of patients referred to major hospitals by our medical director: Did they make a full recovery? Was there anything more we could have done to help them get better? It was this drive to be better informed, better positioned to offer help to those in dire circumstances that spurred my interest
People are my passion! I wake up each morning praying that I make a positive impact in someone’s life. The value of my life lies not on personal achievement and possessions but on how profitable I have been to my neighbor and my world. This belief, no doubt has influenced my choice of career and specialty. Internal medicine is my number one specialty. I love this specialty because it provides me the opportunity to solve varied medical problems ranging from acute care to management of chronic disease. Just like solving a puzzle, an internist applies critical thinking, sound science in preventing, diagnosing and treating varied adult diseases. Internal Medicine is an ever evolving discipline and requires continuous and persistent updating of one’s knowledge. This sits well with my massive appetite of reading. I enjoy the challenges the specialty presents. I love the fact that an internist provides consults to other physicians in disease diagnosis and work as primary care physician. The broad subspecialties in internal medicine match and exceeds my perception of a complete doctor.
During my medical school, I was fascinated by the holistic approach of Internal Medicine and the way it based on physiology to diagnose and treat pathological processes. I was impressed by the thought process of Internal Medicine and soon I knew this is what I want as my career. Fascination for Internal Medicine increased further when I took care of a young patient with diabetic ketoacidosis presenting in an unconscious condition on one of my first calls as a fresh intern. When After night long struggle and intensive care, he recovered metabolically and clinically and looked at me with a smile on his face; that moment was most precious for me and left a deep sense of satisfaction and peace of mind. At that point I realized the true essence
I am certain that the optimum place for me to flourish as a professional in the field of psychology is the University of British Columbia. I intend to continue my education past graduate school to pursue my PhD and am convinced your nationally ranked institution is the ideal place to do so. Becoming a clinical psychologist has been my dream ever since I took my first introduction to psychology class at 16-years-old. The abnormal mind fascinates me and even at such a young age I knew I wanted to study it and provide help to those suffering from mental illness. This fascination grew exponentially when I began my program in university and took an abnormal psychology class with Dr. Erica Yuen.
As a child growing up in Cuba, I felt like medicine was the only career that I was interest in. In my country, a doctor is recognized as an altruist person due to the fact that they usually worked very hard and they were hardly compensated with minimum salaries. Most doctors worked for the feeling of reward felt when they brought their patients back to good health or helped them deal with their ailments and prevent them from diseases; these make them feel that they were doing the right thing. As a doctor you have the ability to cure people and the power to decrease their suffering. I enjoy the challenge and opportunity to provide patient care, this I find extremely satisfying.
“A lot of the appeal of internal medicine is Sherlockian – solving the case from the clues. We are detectives; we revel in the process of figuring it all out. It’s what doctors most love to do” Lisa Sanders.
I have been intrigued by the human mind and body and how it all works. This was enhanced through my study of biology and psychology. Although I am only in my first year of studying psychology I have developed an understanding which I hope to proceed to develop in my further education. I find the insight psychology gives into the human mind and behaviour is fascinating and I would love to move psychology from an area of study to a career. I have a desire to work with people as I am far from shy and have a good level of confidence that allows me to communicate well with strangers.
My road to medicine started when I had an excellent score in the Jordanian General Secondary Education Certificate Examination. Following two months of thorough thinking, I chose the to go to the medical field because of belief that happiness is best achieved by relieving the suffering of others, and physicians have a primary role in making others live better and healthier. During my 6 years of medical school, I achieved a tremendous knowledge in different specialties and felt the joy of exploring the secrets of life through human bodies.
I am a second generation Indian with a Hindu background, born and brought up in the United States. I am a high school junior and I really want to express my great interest in applying for the college that offers medicine courses which I truly believe will be the key for my goals in life to widen my knowledge horizon. When I was in a high school junior, I majored in some subjects that were related to what I wished to pursue in my college; this has been my preferred area of study because it includes nearly all major research themes suiting my interests. My strong interest is to pursue a course in Medicine given that; I want to know how greatly the career has helped in resolving the problems of health issues in the United States. My curiosity of wanting to know more in the field of Medicine has played an important role in the growth of my career. Having been brought up in the U.S. culture, even though I have a Hindu background, it has been very hard for me to adapt to the American culture, but with time, I slowly adapted to their cultures although there was a very wide gap between the two cultures. In short, this paper analyzes my personal background as well as describing an encounter which demonstrated the importance of diversity to me.
During the second year of medical school the changeover from a classroom atmosphere to the clinical wards and outpatient clinics changed my impression towards my profession. I began to understand the need to practice in medicine not just theories from books will do. As I was posted through various specialties, I found that each has its exemplary ways of dealing with disease.
Internists and the multiple different diseases they were exposed to simply astonished me. I found that Internal Medicine was, in
