In the play The Crucible, by Author Miller a character named John Proctor closely resembles the professional golfer Tiger Woods. They each share one trait about them that makes them very similar, they both committed adultery. In today’s society one will still see people shun others based purely or solely on their odd way of life. This happens not because they have done something wrong necessarily, but because the culture that they live in does not accept/condone certain behavior deemed amiss. People that still “shun” people today do so because they do not accept the person’s actions or way of life. In Tiger Woods’ case he committed adultery to be shunned by society. The New York Post wrote of Wood’s image as “ . . . having the public image
Honor and pride are two words that can easily be confused, but have vastly different intentions. The definition of honor is to regard with great respect, John Proctor from the Crucible by Arthur Miller portrays when he decides to be hanged as an honest man. On the contrary the definition of pride is to feel satisfaction from one's own accomplishments which few would debate is the reason why John would hang. In the play there are three main points why what John did was honorable rather than prideful. The first point Involves the townspeople of Salem and how he wanted to pay his respects to them and prove that what was going on was a hoax. The second point involves his religion and how he wanted to Honor God. And Final point was
Logically, John is at fault for the affair, because nobody held a gun to his head and forced him to cheat on his wife, and middle-schoolers aren't really practiced seductresses. However, Arthur Miller was using the events of the Salem witch trials to make a point about contemporary society, so he leveled a certain amount of guilt Elizabeth's way (for not holding her husband properly) and Abigail's way (for being the source of all evil). The text gives you room to make any argument you choose. Truth won't hold all of them, but that's fiction for you…
Shunning existed hundreds of years ago and people still actively shun people from society out of fear or hatred. Abigail Williams from The Crucible and Lindsay Lohan , achild and teen movie star were both shunned by society for one mistake that turned into many.
One flaw that can always be found in society and the Crucible is hypocrisy. I chose hypocrisy because at some point in one's life, they will be a hypocrite; even if they do not realize it. The characters normalization of the extent of this flaw in the Crucible adds to the irony of the play. Mrs. Putnam is a hypocrite because she condemns Goody Osburn and Goody Good for witchcraft, when she was the one who asked Tituba to conjure spirits in the first place. Mr. Putnam acts concerned about ridding Salem of witches, when really he wants his neighbors gone so that he can buy their land and increase his wealth.
As the theme was stated, the audience is introduced to John Proctor struggling to discredit Abby and tell the truth about his integrity and reputation because Proctor is a very respected man in the village of Salem, for if his unmasking of lust is to be revealed he will be killed for it and lost respect as shown in his interaction with Marry Warren. “She’ll kill me for saying that. Abby will charge lechery on you Proctor” (Miller 6230). This shows how Proctor wants to do the right thing but doesn’t want to risk his reputation, as this is to be seen it gives the audience the contradiction of Proctor's choice of whether he should confess. However, John was not afraid to risk confession towards the end of the play to save his wife.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, known as AOC, once said, “They'll tell you you're too loud, that you need to wait your turn and ask the right people for permission. Do it anyway. From the past to the present, women in history have long been told to be submissive, to never argue, and to always obey. In a world where women have been held and still being held to be subordinate to men, Rebecca Nurse, a highly respected character in The Crucible, reflects against gender and social patriarchy. Shown by the articles “Women in Society During the Colonial and Revolutionary Eras”, “Gender and English Identity on the Eve of Colonial Settlement”, “Gender in Colonial America” and “Domesticity the Female Role in Colonial America”Rebecca demonstrates defiance of traditional gender norms.
A. Hook :Where there is darkness there is light, love can shine through the darkest of nights.
In “The Crucible” Arthur Miller made the plot develops through the conflicts by using high tension and climaxes. He ends each of the four acts with a climax. In addition, he allowed the protagonist to develop throughout the acts. “The Crucible” has many internal and external conflicts. The major external conflict is John Proctor trying to save his wife from being hanged by the town officials for supposedly being a witch. The major internal conflict is John trying to decide between saving himself and family from being hanged, or accept the death penalty for false accusations against him. The main conflict sharply differentiated good and evil as John Proctor, the protagonist of the play is faced with the
Has guilt ever caused you to change your perspective on how you are as a person? In “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller the audience is introduced to a character by the name of John Proctor who is a fellow citizen of Salem. Throughout the play John Proctor struggles to deal with his guilt about his affair, but he realizes he's still a good man, reminding the reader that one sin doesn't determine one’s fate.
“The arrogant are wise in their own eyes, but the wise will recognize their lies” (Anonymous). This quote accurately describes how the events in the Salem Witch Trials unfolded. The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, places the reader into the city of Salem, Massachusetts. Arthur Miller tells a fictional story based on real events of how people who were wise in their own eyes used others to better themselves in a community based on honesty. Three characters from the story stand apart in their arrogance. Abigail Williams, John Proctor, and Reverend Parris were conceited and cared only about their personal gains. These characters used their power to blame, but not to be blamed or accused of alleged witchcraft which resulted in the deaths of several townspeople. Arthur Miller used these characters to illustrate how simple lies and rumors can spread and become an unstoppable force. With these simple but powerful accusations, well respected citizens soon became the targets of these characters manipulation.
The Presence of Sexism Within the Witch Trials The presence of sexist rhetoric within the crucible is undeniable. In the witch trials, sexism went both ways. Persuasion was a key factor in surviving; many used that to their benefit. By putting on a show, lying or not, a person can find a way to survive almost any incrimination.
In The Crucible (1953), Arthur Miller informs his audience that Abigail Williams’ actions are unjust. Abigail has been accused of spreading lies about people being witches in Salem causing secrets, and lies in Salem, but she is only a child, innocent, and immature. Wouldn't all children lie to escape a punishment? Why would anyone be so quick to judge someone who committed a sin everyone makes? Like all children, Abigail is a pathological liar who doesn't want to receive a brutal punishment, and will continue a lie until caught.
“While all deception requires secrecy, all secrecy is not meant to deceive.” This clear and concise quote was expressed by Sissela Bok, a Swedish-American philosopher and the daughter of two Nobel Prize winners. See deception is a concept that is practically glorified lying to grasp an advantage upon something. In The Crucible we see many depictions of deception. Nearly all coming from Abigail.
The Crucible by Arthur Miller is a historical play set in 1962 in the small town of Salem, Massachusetts. As you may know, you've all placed your trust in the words and actions of someone close to you. And what do they do? They betray you! It's rarely justified, and can happen to the best of us. Based on authentic records of witchcraft trials in the seventeenth-century this play explains how a small group of girls manage to create a massive panic in their town by spreading accusations of witchcraft. These rumors in turn are the causes that many citizens are hung for. This essay will show how the lies and betrayal of a few individuals eventually leads to the downfall of Salem and its society.
“The essence of immorality is the tendency to make an exception of myself” (Addams). Immorality is a very subjective concept, but sometimes it is undeniable. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, Abigail Williams is shown to be the most immoral character through her constant disregard of others throughout the different events of the story, furthering the point that when in fearful situations people will only think about themselves.
