The central idea about recovering from alcoholism is a constant reminder about how real Dan is portrayed. Horror becomes more realistic as people grow older. The monsters under the bed become the demons inside the head and losing loved ones. It forces people to realize that they lack knowledge about the world they live in and can leave them feeling stranded (Horrors Writers). King has children living in poor conditions, the main character is recovering from alcoholism, people losing loved ones, and Dan dealing with terminal illnesses in his novel. The theme is about alcoholism and that anybody can overcome it if they try. Only addicts understand the horrors they deal with on a daily basis and time becomes the worst enemy of all (King 101).
