She uses elements such as imagery and alliteration to create feeling and intrigue the reader further into her story. Eyre uses imagery to depict her words into images. These description details give the reader an image to grasp on and use throughout the story. For example “…the cold winter wind had brought with it clouds so somber and a rain so penetrating.” She uses her words to place an image in the readers mind. The author uses alliteration to also add emphasis to certain phrases or words that seem of importance to her as well as the passage. For example “Be seated somewhere, and until you can speak…”
Imagery is used by many authors for mutiple things in their text. Tim O’Brien uses imagery throughout his text to convey tones in the story. In his story, one can find the multiple examples of imagery. O’Brien uses imagery to portray the tones of disgust and despair. All great authors know the perfect words to say to help the readers create the image in their mind.
We often rely on imagery, a literary device that uses vivid descriptions and appeals to the senses, in our storytelling to point out the important facts in our stories. It helps our audience picture the scene and understand the severity of the situation. In my opinion, a well-written scene can be incredibly meaningful and thought-provoking with the help of imagery, sometimes even more so than a photograph. In literature, this is no different. Authors will describe characters and events in great detail when they feel it is important to the story. They will use imagery to point out character traits, themes, symbols, and motifs. A good author paints you a picture so you can imagine the places, colors, expressions, textures, with all the fine details.

Imagery is the figurative language used by the author to give the reader a visual description of the objects or situations in their literary work. In the short story “Stones”, Sandra Birdsell uses imagery to describe the physical appearances of one of the main character’s named Mrs.Hallman. Mrs. Hallman was described by the author as “tall and slim, her red toenails sticking the end of her white sandals and she smelled like sweet William that grew in a patch beside the back patch" (pg173). As shown in the quotation the author uses descriptive words to enable the reader to imagine the character of interest. As an example, the authors use of words gives the reader an image of how beautiful and fashionable of a person Mrs.Hallman is and how sweet and strong the smell of her perfume is. On the other hand, in the short story “To Every Thing There Is a Reason” Alistair MacLeod uses imagery to describe places and events that took place in the story. She

He talked about the intimidating and joyful times he experienced. He leaves the story at a cliffhanger as he explains how he and his friend didn't want to be the last people assassinated. In The Yellow Birds, the author, Kevin Powers, uses personification and imagery in order to explain the challenges and experiences he faced during the war.
For example, “... did nothing to block the blinding light and searing heat beating down from above. He opened his mouth… and a raw plume of dry warmth shot down his throat, seeming to obliterate any air or moisture in its path.” (94). Alliteration is defined as the repetition of initial consonant sounds in two or more neighboring words or syllables. It is a literary device that authors use to bring attention to certain important ideas or concepts in stories. Alliterations allow the reader to bring their senses together to hear and feel what they are reading by bring in sounds of the world around us into literate. This helps the reader visualize the story, therefore helping the reader to remember it. It is used in many stories as a way to hide metaphors and other subliminal messages. For example, alliterations with the 's' being the prominent sound could be visualized as a snake slithering, making a character have a slyness about him. Specifically in Anglo-Saxon literature, alliteration is significant because it is how authors organized their poems or stories, includes repetition which aids memorization, and emphasizes important parts of the text that the author wants the audience to know. Alliteration in important in both “The Wanderer” and “The Wife’s Lament” because it helps evoke certain emotions and feelings by using the different functions of alliterative language.
Violence is the most recurrent gothic convention used in Jane Eyre, which is prominent in Charlotte Brontë's effective development of the novel and the character of Jane Eyre, who, throughout this novel, is searching for a home in which she would have a sense of belonging and love which would ultimately resolve this exact unfulfilled need she had as a child. The neglect she experienced in her childhood is manifested in the way she is treated by her aunt, Mrs. Reed, as in the first page of the novel Jane Eyre admits: ‘Me, she had dispensed from joining the group, saying, 'She regretted to be under the necessity of keeping me at a distance’’. This opening shows how there is a clear line of separation drawn between Jane and her relatives due to her complicated family background which consequently results in their reluctance to accept her into their environment. These complications lead to her maltreatment, which also adds on to the violence she experiences acting as a catalyst for the development of the character and her subconscious quest.
Charlotte Bronte’s “Jane Eyre” has captivated readers for generations. As with all coming of age novels, young adults can relate to the struggles and triumphs of Jane. Jane’s setting influences and parallel her emotions. A reader can see the novel through her eyes and perspective. In Bronte’s “Jane Eyre,” the location often parallels Jane’s emotional growth through the tone presented by the environment, resulting in the different places she lives revealing her journey through depression. Jane’s behavioral patterns and thoughts suggest clinical depression that affected her choices throughout the novel and her life at Gateshead, Lowood, Thornfield, Marsh End, and Ferdean.

Jane Eyre continually struggles to find a middle ground between ‘fire’ and ‘water,’ as she is both aggressive and submissive. In Eric Solomon’s critical analysis, “The Symbolism of Fire and Water in Jane Eyre” Solomon accurately describes this struggle. It is important to note that Jane conflicts with authority, defeats the struggle by her inner confidence, and progresses into separation. Although Solomon clearly describes Jane’s struggles in her journey to find an equal balance between ‘fire’ and ‘water,’ other examples highlight crucial moments in the novel, by adding symbolism that enhances the struggles that Jane faces.
Another example of imagery in the story is when the author used it to describe Emily when she ask for poison to the druggist.“still a slight woman, though thinner than usual, with cold, haughty black eyes in a face the flesh of which was strained across the temples and about the eyes ockets as you imagine a lighthouse-keepers face ought to look”. The author makes emphasis in Emily’s face and eyes meaning that she is lost in her own world and foreshadows that Emily would use the poison for something wrong.

Jane eyre is a clear example of a bildungsroman because we see how she starts off as a miserable and poor child who is mistreated and ends up as a rich mistress. Jane Eyre’s development through the book helps the idea of the novel being a bildungsroman. In the first chapters of the book we see Jane filled with negative emotions towards the Reed’s because she is badly mistreated and being locked in the red room is the tipping point for jane. Later on when Jane attends lowood her emotions have drastically changed, she know feels some sort of comfort and love. Although the reader might think Jane has been through it all that is not the reality as she will fall in love with a man that will cause her problems but will ultimately reach happiness
