American Beauty is a movie that sets in suburban America. The story is about Lester, whom is a middle-aged writer working in a magazine company. He was having a midlife crisis where he felt lonely and numbed by continuous unchanging routine of his everyday life. In the movie, his wife portrayed as a successful real estate agent, but she was also going through her own midlife crisis in both her career and personal life. Lester’s daughter, Jane Bumham had alienated her parents and was going through puberty. They have a new neighbor who is a U.S. Marine Corps Colonel Frank Fitts, and he has a son, Ricky Fitts, who is a drug dealer. Lester was going to get fired from his company that he had worked for fourteen
Michael Walzer’s essay on “What Does It Mean to Be an American?” raises many points about the American citizen. Specifically, he discusses “American” as an adjective (Walzer). “American” is often associated with American citizens; while this is true, the term can also be applied to Canadians and Mexicans (Walzer). American is such an ambiguous adjective that it is applicable to all countries and individuals that are part of the North American continent. Like Mr. Walzer states, American is not a truly defined term and America is not a country (Walzer). Walzer goes on to introduce a Horace Kallen’s opinion on American’s as anonymous and their “unique” pluralism (Walzer). There are exceptions to all things; the positive to being an American is the fact that Americans can be whatever they choose to be. I feel to be an American one must believe in the American ideals, they must believe in life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. American 's in general may be anonymous, however, upon further reflection they have left the definition of “American” open for each American to define the adjective for themselves.

What kind of an American am I? To summarize it up into one word, I'm a proud American. To explain the characteristics that the word proud means to me, I took each letter in the word and made a new word. The new words represent the kind of American I am.
An American can be many things. They can be selfish, kind, judgmental, the list can go on an and on. All Americans have many different virtues. One thing that most all Americans have in common is that they put their own needs before others and usually have no problem using others to get what they want. They will take any opportunity to throw others under the bus either to take blame off of themselves, or to get whatever it is that they want.
An American is not just a type of countryman, it’s a state of mind and lifestyle. Maybe an American is just a soldier fighting for freedom? John McCain and the people he was captured with are the perfect examples of what a true Americans are. While captured in Vietnam, his friend, Mike, received a red and white cloth.
Americans are the stitches that held together Betsy Ross’s flag and continue to hold together the American flag. They are the tears and holes of the Constitution. They are the winds that flow freely in open fields; the waves that crash against the rocks. Americans are the salmon that are not afraid to swim upstream and go against the current. They are the bait that attract and lure other fish in the ocean to the fishing boat. Americans are a spring day with the sun shining down and warming one’s face, the sound of new life, new beginnings, and the smell of freshly cut grass and newly planted flowers. Americans are the sunrise we are guaranteed to see every morning, even after the darkest of nights.
Throughout the life span of the United States, from its infancy after the Revolution to the present, people have asked, “What is an American?” This question goes far beyond asking who is a citizen or who resides in this land. No, it asks what the identity of an American is? Through popular, art, film, and literature, the American image is defined as being based on embracing our individual identities.
The opening scene of American Beauty shows a teenage girl lying in a bed, venting her feelings towards her father. In this, the audience sees her in dull clothing and colours, minimal make-up and has greasy-looking hair. As she sits up, her hair falls around her face and she stares directly into the camera, giving a sense of unease to the audience.
America, the place where hopes and dreams come true, where people come to look for better opportunity is welcome to people from every nation out there. America doesn’t just have one nationality, it is full of immigrants, who come for a better life. The phrases ‘I’m an American’ is a part of our everyday vocabulary, but what does it mean? To be an American means to be yourself and have pride in what you do. Every American has a special skill to contribute to make America what it is today. That’s what makes America unique compared to other countries in the world.
Rachel Wells Professor Shaw ENG 241 28 November 2016 Defining an American The term “American” means more than being born in the United States. Behind it, there are years of strength, pride, courage, determination, and resolution.
More than just a parodic take on suburban life, the film American Beauty speaks about looking closer at what we desire and believe will bring fulfillment. It depicts the perspective of very different characters, in which many share the similarity of chasing these beautiful dreams in an attempt to replace their weaknesses. As these characters get a glimpse of their dreams, they begin to discover how deceptive their idea of beauty is. For the audience, these dreams demonstrate how they are nothing but skewed fantasies that end up replacing true beauty. It is one character, Ricky Fitts, who further demonstrates how unaware these characters are of their false dreams.
What is an American? One may say an American is just someone who gets to live free in America, but it is so much more than that. at American is not just a single person but instead it’s everyone as a whole. It’s not who we are as a person but who we are supposed to want to be. An American is everything beautiful.
American Beauty, a film that was written by Allan Ball and directed by Sam Mendes in 1999 is a unique piece that demonstrates many sociological themes throughout the development of the plot. The characters strive to portray themselves as the All American Family. They live in a nice house, drive nice cars and seem perfectly normal to the general public, but the audience is allowed to view the deep set issues that plague the main characters; Lester Burnham (Kevin Spacey), Carolyn Burnham (Annette Bening), Jane Burnham (Thora Birch), and Jane's best friend Angela Hayes (Mena Suvari). As the plot develops there are many obvious parallels relating the lives of the characters to Merton's Strain
