To Kill A Mockingbird Throughout history, civilization has dealt with racism. The constant discrimination between two or more races has been going on for countless amount of years. Minor details such as skin color and culture have become one of the main dilemmas. Sadly racism is still an occurrence to this day. With today’s society, racism is not as extreme as it was back in the 1930’s. Racism has twisted in meaning and is either over exaggerated or address appropriately. Culture has distorted the meaning by taking the smallest of comments, or gestures, and completely altering them into an inaccurate assumption. In Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird an unfair trial was made. The Scottsboro and Emmett Till trials have also shown an unfair trial taken into place. Most recently, the aftermath of the attacks on the world trade center on September 11, 2001 show unfair judgements to an entire culture. …show more content…
In To Kill A Mockingbird, Tom Robinson’s trial is a substantial example of how blacks were treated during the 1930’s. Tom Robinson was accused of raping Mayella Ewell. Robinson did not receive a fair trial. He did not do anything to Mayella. The only thing he did to Mayella was be a friend to her. Tom felt sorry for her because she did not have many friends, and she was not well liked. Mayella was abused by her father, Bob Ewell the town drunk, and accused Tom Robinson of causing her harm. During the trial Mayella did not have good support to her case, and it was clear that she did not have a set story. She kept changing up her story, and it seemed that she was making it all up as she went. This was completely overlooked, and no one believed that Tom was innocent. The only crime Tom Robinson committed was feeling sorry for Mayella
Tom Robinson died because she lied. His life was forever changed. Members of the jury, the defense, may claim that Mayella was trying to protect herself by lying. They may say that she did it so her father would not beat her. There is still no reason to lie, especially when a man’s life is on the line.
She says what her papa did to her don’t count.” (Lee 260). Mayella may not have been hurt by Tom Robinson, but she was definitely hurt by somebody. That somebody is her father, Bob Ewell. Mayella did not have anybody to go to besides her father, who had stripped away her innocence.
Tom Robinson in “To Kill A MockingBird” was falsely accused of raping Mayella Ewill. Atticus proves that Tom didn’t rape Mayella, but the jury wouldn’t acquire him because of his skin color. They believed the Ewill’s fake story over Tom’s true story (Lee 276-283). Atticus caught Mayella in several
In to kill a mockingbird the defendant Tom Robinson is a young black man and the plaintiffs is Mayella Ewell, a young white girl . Through colorism black people seem to appear as “bad” whereas white people are seen as “good”. Tom Robinson has the poor event of being judged .
With them being up in the south, men were to treat women will kindness and respect, even if he did not want to treat women correctly, he would still have to, just because he was black and below the whites. “...that all Negro men are not to be trusted around our women.” ("DBQ: Is Mayella Powerful?" 19) This quote is what gives Mayella power too, because she is a female, and just like the quote said, black men were not to be trusted with white females. This means that Tom Robinson will not be able to get away from Mayella’s grip no matter what the outcome is because he was a Negro man that was accused by a white
He would often help Mayella with chores, and when she tried to pay him he would say “No mam’, there ain’t no charge” (Lee255). According to Scout “Tom Robinson was probably the only person who was ever decent to her” (Lee257). On the day he was accused of raping her, he was simply helping her “git [a] box down from the top of the Chiffarobe” (Lee259) when she hugged and kissed him. He tried to let her down easy, then ran because he would “hafta face up to what [he] didn’t do” (Lee265). His former employer even fells the need to defend him and say “that boy’s worked for me eight years an’I ain’t had a speck o’trouble outta him.
We learned that Mayella was on her front porch at dusk that evening. Her father made her chop a chiffarobe, but she felt like she wasn’t strong enough so she called over Tom Robinson to help her out. She offered him a nickel and when she went to go get the nickel the next thing she remembers was him being on her. Mayella quotes, “ I turned around and ‘fore I knew it he was on me. Just run up behind me, he did” (page 241). Then he had her by her neck and was swearing and calling her dirt. Mayella said that she fought and was screaming but then he hit her again and again. She doesn’t remember too well but she does remember her dad in the room asking her who did it, then she fainted.

Many characters are prime examples of this idea, like Tom Robinson’s
Even though Tom is innocent he is still convicted of the crime in the end. While Mayella is poor and looked down upon by the rest of Maycomb County, she is powerful over Tom Robinson and the African American community. Mayella’s extent of power greatly relies on race and the discrimination African Americans faced in the 1930’s. During the trial, the amount of
Clearly, then, throughout To Kill a Mockingbird there has been many ubiquitous effects of racism on the citizens of Macomb. The lives of many characters in this novel have been disrupted and deeply affected in many ways because of racism. Throughout this novel, Harper Lee shows that one's race and skin color can change other's opinions about a character, without knowing anything about the character. In the end, no matter the color of your skin or what race you are, we are all equal, and we should all be treated

But the true injustice is the fact that there are laws that are supposed to prevent this unfair judgment in courts but

Miranda Fricker dissects and examines the problems of testimonial justice and injustice, in her book, Epistemic Injustice, Power and the Ethics of Knowing. She gives two key examples of examples of epistemic injustices in order for her audience to better grasp her point of view. By using the characters of Marge Sherwood in The Talented Mr. Ripley and Tom Robinson in To Kill a Mockingbird, Fricker draws in her audience and succinctly identifies two critical components to testimonial injustices, race and gender. Throughout her novel, Fricker arrives at the conclusion that even though testimonial injustices occur frequently in the daily life of a human, testimonial justice can be achieved. The understanding of Miranda Fricker’s view of what testimonial
