3. Flaws
It sounds counter-intuitive to love something for its flaws regardless, when it comes to superheroes it’s true. We as humans are flawed, so it’s only natural that we would have a fascination with characters that are superhuman yet still manage to feel normal human emotions and desires. Superman always succeeds and is the epitome of good which is why he’s loved and well known across the world. Despite this, Superman isn’t real; he’s flawless, too good. This makes for good media, but he isn’t truly a character that we can relate to, because we as humans are flawed.
When I think of a flawed, troubled hero one of the first characters that comes to mind is Batman. Batman was set on the path of becoming a hero after experiencing a
If you were to ask any individual what their idea of a hero is, they’ll most likely give you a perfect description of superman, but that’s the fictional visual that’s been placed into the minds of the general public. What is a true hero? A true hero is selfless, brave, and determined; someone like Ted Lavender. Lavender was highly respected, he was as brave as he could be without needing recognition, and he took a bullet to the head.
Superman is represented as a symbol of strength and courage, representing the heroic act of destroying barriers and overcoming adversity.
Since the creation of “The Invincible Superman”in 1938 he still remains to be one of the best and most well-known heroes.“Telling their sorrow, telling stories /Of their dead King and his greatness, his glory” (831-834).Beowulf has died, showing how he is mortal and able to die. Superman is not, he is invincible--indestructible from any and everything. Another huge difference between the two heroes is Beowulf is a human from earth. While Superman is inhuman and was exiled from the planet Krypton. After the battle with Grendel Beowulf must swim to the bottom of a murky lake to take the life of the one who took his men’s lives, Grendel’s Mother. Similarly, Superman must travel to other planets and other galaxies to help those in need of him. As a child, Superman is sent away from the planet of Krypton, to the town of Smallville,Kansas where he then realizes all his supernatural powers. Superman defends Metropolis against disaster but also flies into outer space to fight off Brainiac and save a city from his own planet. Many times, he makes the trip to other universes to help those in distress. This is a resemblance of how both men are able to use their remarkable abilities to better the lives of
Superman, also known as Clark Kent, is the most popular modern day hero. Superman spent most of his time saving people from natural disasters and corrupt businessmen. He would level slums to force the city to build decent housing, and he would use his powers to terrorize munitions makers.
Beowulf was a brave and strong hero. He feared nothing. Superman is much like Beowulf in this sense. Beowulf did not have super powers but he had no fear of death. He didn’t go out to fight demons for gold. He fought for glory. Superman was similar. He fought to protect. He did not want anything in return. The thing that makes these two men heroes is that they would lay down their life at any moment to save another. The both faced their “demons”. Superman fought crime day to day as Beowulf went around the world to fight demons and prevent them from harming villages. Although both of these heroes were great, they both had their weaknesses. Beowulf could not resist the beauty of Grendel’s mother. She was too beautiful for him to resist.
For centuries, man has struggled with the concepts of good and evil and have produced astounding works as a reflection of it. This is ideally the foundation of early fables and folklore dating back to ancient civilizations. Stories about famed heroes and the battle of good and evil woven into extravagant tales of danger, destiny, and triumph. These stories were often assimilated into individual societies, told from generation to generation until eventually finding themselves becoming an integral part of the culture. In 1938, a new era began to emerge known as the “golden age” of superheroes. Superman made his first appearance in action comics, forging a unique identity as the first comic book superhero in American culture and quickly
But whence digging past the loud colours and the "it's-a-bird-it's-a-plane," generic, one realises the true face of Superman. He isn't super for his inhuman abilities or his capricious appearance, he isn't a true man for his strong build and his appealing features: Superman is super because he's what everyone should aspire to be, and he is a man because he melds the world in a form of good and good only. For if Superman wanted to, he could rule the world and no one would be able to stop him. Superman is, literally, a god among men. He has the power to sink entire continents and kill millions of people with ease, but he chooses to protect everyone, good or bad, no matter how insignificant and tiny the life is for nothing in return. Superman is a hero because he's there for everyone, never compromising his ideals and taking the high road to support those in need. This is despite the fact that he could basically be a god lording over others without much trouble, but instead chooses to serve and inspire. That is why he is a hero. Superman is the ultimate hero, and not just because he is the most powerful being on earth but for his integrity which sets him completely apart. One could constantly remark on how Superman looks for the best in everyone, how he is ultimately loyal and selfless, not even considering the fact that he could rule the world but chooses to serve is the greatest compliment you can
The quote, “"Superman was more powerful than any politician and more effective than any social activist," said Laura Siegel Larson, daughter of Jerry Siegel” (Michael Sangiacomo 1), shows how Superman somewhat assumed the position as a politician or some kind of role model in America. This was because he was able to calm America down a little and allow them to rest after long, hard days or in the mornings to help them get up and their day. He could also speak openly and appeal to all Americans, which added to his popularity. People went to work all day to try to make money and during this time it was literally a matter of life or death, so seeing Superman overpower his barriers helped them relax and get through the day. Moreover; this simply goes to show that he was easy to relate to, which Americans seemed to adore about him.
Superman is idolized from the time children are very young because he upholds the very ideal that people believe to be the ideal characteristic of humanity. Instances of humanity remind us of what
Due to his unique abilities and powers, society expects nothings less than perfection from Superman. Having lost his family and home planet “It is not easy to be [Superman].” Superman has to fight everything that society tells him to so that he can be himself. He is put on a high pedestal in society and is expected to perform in tough situations. Many people in the world look up to Superman due to his special powers. Society assumes Superman’s life is easy and perfect since he has these powers which make a mockery of mere mortals but it is not. Superman wishes people did not think so much of him and tries hard to please everyone. Frustration builds up and Superman feels like killing himself (hence the kryptonite). Superman simply cannot make a mistake since he is always expected to succeed. Similarly, many people in our society are put on high pedestals. Even students like ourselves, are expected to receive straight A’s and never score inadequate on a test. Eventually, when these students receive a mediocre grade, they are ashamed of themselves. These students are frightened to inform their parents since their expectations are so high. Athletes are also put under tremendous pressure to perform in big games. Failing is simply not an option. If one fails to succeed, the loss will follow them around for the rest of their lives. A stamp of failure will revolve around their name. Similarly, Superman feels like he is put on a high pedestal. Society does not let Superman “cry” or “dream” since he is not a normal person. He is not expected to “cry” or “dream”. His duty is to protect Earth from deleterious villains and he does not have a choice to say no. Society needs to be less “naive” and understand that reaching perfection is not possibly. Like Superman, men in today’s society are socialized to be strong, dependable, and emotionless. Men are required to repress their emotions and expected to live up to a ridiculous idea of what it is to be a “man”. Using Superman as a symbol is a
Heroism can be defined by those who are courageous and continuously strive for the greater good. As seen on Batman, a young man who leaves his luxurious lifestyle to salvage his community from evildoers, “It's not who I am underneath... but what I *do*... that defines me.” During a dark time at Gotham, Bruce Wayne defended the peace and impartiality of the residents of his community. All of his hardships were what led the city to be safe from the tribulations of the world. Another example to clarify the definition of a true hero is from the story, where a soldier loses his leg after a terrible war in Afghanistan, “but they never told me I was doing a good job for fear that I might get complacent-“Tristan Eugene Segers who battled for his country,
Batman and Joker I feel like the best way to depict the idea of good and evil is by drawing Batman and the Joker; Batman being Jekyll and Hyde being the Joker. Doing the right and noble things in life may be daunting, but the end result is rewarding, and the honor attached to these deeds is something we should strive for. However, there are many times in which we must face our other side, which is similar to the Joker; a side in which we give into our evil temptations. We may not get the best recognition, but we will definitely get all of our desires.
The main factor that tells me that Superman is a better Superhero is that fact that he actually has powers whereas Batman has to rely on money. Superman has many powers such as: Extreme strength, invulnerability, heat and x-ray vision, super breath, and flight. Batman on the other hand, has no powers and without his billionaire status, would have never made it as a superhero. In a scenario where Superman and Batman were both dirt poor, Batman would just stay as Bruce Wayne and Superman would still
When I was a kid, my super hero was Superman, I kind of admired him because I thought it would be cool to be able to fly and to have super-human strength, but the main reason why I liked Superman is because he helped people, no matter what.
Batman is one of the many fictional superheroes which appears in the “American comic books” that is published by the DC comics. The character is a secret identity for Bruce Wayne, the only heir to Wayne Enterprises. Bruce Wayne swore an oath of vengeance when he witnessed the death of his parents;Thomas Wayne and Martha Wayne (Diamond, 2015). Bat man combats criminals in Gotham: a fictional city, with assistance from various characters, for example, his butler Alfred and Gordon; Gotham city police commissioner. Unlike many of the superheroes characters, Batman possesses no powers .Bruce Wayne trained himself intellectually and physically .it is from dedication to training he possessed the useful traits of physical prowess, martial arts skills, detective skills and indomitable will to fight for justice. Though his motive is to combat crime and protect people of Gotham city from criminals, the justice system in most of the times views Batman as a villain and vigilante. He can inflict fear to Gotham city criminals thereby bringing calmness to the city. I identify myself with the Batman character through his selfless will for justice, his strong determination to do good
