This capstone course has helped me to tie together all the classes I have taken thus far in the program as well as helped me to identify what skills and knowledge I need to continue working on. The capstone presentation, as well as class, helped me to practice strength-based language and be conscious of how I describe my client’s when presenting. It can be a habit to use negative language to describe a problem-saturated story and unintentionally describe a patient’s story in a way that comes off as stigmatizing. This class helped me become conscious and tactful of how I word sensitive circumstances. It was a great experience to present my patient’s case to the class and practice being thoughtful on how I portrayed my patient’s presenting …show more content…
Evidence-based practice will be extremely helpful among the hospital setting because it will allow for me to learn from reliable resources. Using evidence-based practice thus far has helped for me to learn about different cultures and become more prepared when meeting with patients. I will continue to work within the hospital setting and need to be sensitive of how different cultures feel about the medical system as well as treatment options. At times, I have found myself wondering why my patient does not want to go a certain treatment route and many times I can use evidence-based practice to get a better understanding. Many times evidence-based practice has allowed for me to share articles with coworkers and have dependable evidence to fall back on when advocating for my patient within team meetings. In week five, I also found the topic of suicide to be very helpful because I have discovered that I need to gain skills for working with patients who are suicidal or facing death. Many cancer patients have to think a great deal about death and oftentimes contemplate suicide. Throughout my capstone presentation, it became evident how difficult it was to process death with my patient who had a terminal illness. I need to practice asking those straightforward questions about death and suicide to my patient’s. It is known that death is not a desirable topic, but it is a discussion that is necessary especially within my agency setting. I realized during my
Evidence-based practice is important because it let nurses know what they are doing, why they are doing it and how they can do it well. Also, evidence-based practice is a process of professional learning, even in training the nurse must know how to ask the right
Evidence-based practice improves patient outcomes. There are apparent gaps between understanding and applying evidence-based practice, but that does not mean that we shouldn’t take the time to try and eliminate those gaps and do what’s best for our patients.
Evidence-based practice is the practice of making clinical decisions based off the best available research evidence coupled with the nurse’s own expertise, while also taking into account, the patient’s assessments and own personal preferences. This use of research has proven effective at providing better outcomes and lower healthcare costs, yet there are several barriers, such as time, education, and support, which prevent nurses from consistently using evidence-based practice (AJN, 2012). The top three barriers to the use of evidence-based practice are lack of time, education, and support in implementing new practices and using them consistently.
This capstone course assisted in connecting all the material I have learned thus far in the program as well as helped me to identify what skills and knowledge I need to continue working on. The capstone presentation, as well as class, helped me to practice strength-based language and be conscious of how I describe my clients when presenting them to others. It can be a habit to use negative language to describe a problem-saturated story and unintentionally describe a patient’s story in a way that comes off as stigmatizing. This class helped me become conscious and tactful about how I word sensitive circumstances. It was a great experience to present my patient’s case to the class and practice being thoughtful of how I portrayed my patient’s presenting problem to the group.
Evidence-based practice is an approach used by health care professionals to continually use current best evidence-based research to make ethical and reliable decisions regarding patient care. “Research to promote evidence-based practice is becoming more and more a part of the regular work of health care leaders” (Grand Canyon University, 2015, p. 1). However, it is important to determine the difference between solid research and flawed research that provides unreliable inferences. Evidence-based research includes focusing on a clinical question; and includes the review and incorporation of several studies to strengthen the results of the new study (Grand Canyon University, 2015). Roddy et al. and Ganz et al. articles will be assessed to determine if the recommended changes were backed by solid research that warrants changes in a hospital.
Evidence-based practice is a formulation of ideas, research and conclusions to formulate the best possible health care choice (Hood, 2014). In health care the process of utilizing current information begins with a question can something be done better, can the patients benefit as a result and is it cost effective, EBP seeks new information to replace old or outdated information. When there are doubts if something can be done better a research team collects data on the subject using unbiased information they analyze the data, design interventions that are based on the new evidence and makes their final recommendations on their findings (Hood,
The impact of evidence based practice has been brought into nursing through education, practice, and science over the last decade. Evidence based practice provides quality care to patients that is effective, safe, and efficient. Evidence based practice promises moving care to a high level of producing the intended health outcome for the patients. “EBP is aimed at hardwiring current knowledge into common care decisions to improve care processes and patient outcomes” (Stevens, 2013). EBP empowers nurses and expands their skills by using the best available evidence to guide nursing care and patient outcomes.
a. The current thought about evidenced based practice is that it can be useful if the evidence is good and been proven to work. Just like any other new thing in the medical field it has many criticisms but they have been debunked on the basis of underlying misinformation or misunderstandings. One of the problems with evidence based practice is human judgement, when picking out which evidence to use it can be influenced by a decision maker 's biases and political interests. Another problem with evidenced based practice is that some of the EBP out there does not meet the requirements of scientific evidence.
According to Lewis, Dirksen, Heitkemper & Bucher (2014), “Evidence-based practice is a problem-solving approach to clinical decision making. It involves the use of the best available evidence in combination with clinical expertise and patient preferences and values to achieve desired patient outcomes.” Using evidence based practice in nursing is extremely important, because evidence-based practice is the result of others trying a practice one way but needing to change some of the guidelines to make the practice safer and over all better for patients.
Evidence based practice and practice based evidence are a big part of a treatment process. These two can provide appropriate treatment that is needed to make advances in health care practices. Having enough evidence helps people determine whether to do something or not. To provide the best possible treatment for each patient you have to take information and see what will work best for each of your patients. Some will work and some will not work. Methodological issues can arise with in any type of research and some are more controversial than others. In the article “Practice Based Evidence: Back to the Future” (2011) the point of view was that research comes from evidence and that
As every patient is unique and has his/her own condition, nurses and other health care providers need a source to follow as a guideline. Evidence based practice can be used as good guideline for health care provider, and it also can show different ways of care and their results. Evidence based practice has a huge role in the world of nursing profession. One of the biggest goals of nurses is to apply the evidence into their practice in a right way, even though a lot of nurses could not apply the evidence into their practice in the right way. ((Schmidt & Brown, 2015). Role of a professional nurse is to implement the evidence into practice in a right way, and create the right result from it. There are a lot aspects involved in evidence based practice
Evidence-based practice is important because it lets nurses know what they are doing, why they are doing it and how they can do it better based on scientific research. Then evidence-based practice is a process of professional learning, even in training the nurse must know how to ask the right questions, how to critically appraise evidence, how to make clinical decisions and how to solve the clinical problems. Then the evidence-based practice is not only required for the nurses to have knowledge but also the nurses need to use this knowledge to identify evidence to inform practice and how you might subsequently assimilate this
My capstone project has been on a journey that has been moving forward, but there are many more road blocks ahead before its completion. This has been an intensive and active learning project that has consumed my thoughts daily. My concern is that I may not have thoroughly presented my thoughts on paper in an organized, concise, logical and clear matter. My problem statement, I believe is too broad and needs to be narrow down to one focus. A narrow focused problem statement should not change what I have already submitted because my project has always been on focusing on cultural diversity. I am still waiting on the return of the papers I submitted for my capstone presentation and practicum. My plan is to make my presentation this week
As I prepare myself for my capstone presentation and paper, I look back on how challenging and rewarding this experience at the department has been. I chose this particular case for my capstone because it really outlines one of the core values in the code of ethics and speaks to the positive work that the department does. Although there are six core values, I always stress the importance of human relationships. I was able to build a strong relationship with my clients and this was essential in the helping process. It is also very critical that the department was able to help strengthen this family. Mom and dad were able to work together with grandmother and the department to get their baby back. Over school vacation, my clients were reunified
