Have you ever come across a conflict in your life or multiple conflicts that you had to face? In the novel The Outsiders by the author S.E Hinton, Johnny, Ponyboy, and Darry all have come across many conflicts. Ponyboy, Johnny, and Darry's parents died, and Darry was left to be in charge of the boys. Darry works all the time to be able to provide everything the boys need. Ponyboy faces many conflicts during the like, getting beat up by the Socs, when Ponyboy almost drowned, and when Darry slapped him after coming home late and making excuses. To begin with, Ponyboy is walking back from the movies one night and is jumped by a group of Socs. Ponyboy could have easily avoided this conflict if he would have just called for a ride. As Ponyboy was walking home a group of Socs rolled up in their car, Ponyboy just kept his head down trying to avoid them, but it didn’t turn out how he would have wanted it to. “I knew it wasn’t any use though-the fast walking, I mean -- even before the Corvair …show more content…
Ponyboy doesn’t feel loved by Darry because he slapped him and Darry doesn’t treat Ponyboy like he treats Sodapop. Darry treats Ponyboy with a tough love because he wants Ponyboy to succeed and not be a dropout like Sodapop. Ponyboy came home at 2 in the morning and the greasers were really getting worried. Darry thought it was all excuses and slapped him this is conflict because Ponyboy doesn't feel loved by Darry. “Darry wheeled around and slapped me so hard that it knocked me back against the door.”(pg- 50, S.E Hinton) Ponyboy has never been hit by darry nor has Darry ever hit Ponyboy so it was all just a very big shock to the boys that it took a little while for them to process what really happened. This is a conflict because Ponyboy doesn’t like being hit or for it to make him feel like darry doesn’t like him. Ponyboy is like the baby of the family and the soiled one and doesn’t have to do all the things the older boys have
Conflict played a huge role in this book. Without it the book would not be interesting and no one would want to read it. While there are many different kinds of disputes in this novels, the main ones are character versus character, character versus nature, and character versus society. Many books have a lot of conflict in them, but The Outsiders has a lot more than any other book. To conclude The Outsiders is a book filled with many different kinds of
S.E Hinton the author of The Outsiders wrote an astounding book that remains popular to this day, a story that has influenced people for almost fifty years and will continue to be a classic for years to come. We follow ponyboy a 14 year old boy from Oklahoma, who lives with his two brothers Darry and Sodapop and their “gang” the greasers as they deal with rumbles, run ins with the “fuzz”, the Socs, and the realization that problems occur no matter who you are.. In the city that they call home the division between two “ gangs” the Socs who live on the west side and the Greasers who live on the east is the most problematic conflict in the story . Although the two groups don’t seem to get along, they soon discover that they are more alike than
“The struggle you’re in today is developing the strength you need for tomorrow.” The Outsiders is a novel by S.E. Hinton about a group of boys who face many challenges and hardships together. The novel is based off adversity and how although it could have negative impacts it could still bring some positivity like finding the real image of actions, overcoming fears, and bringing a family together.
The humans’ nature is always following other people without thinking. People are afraid to be different from others. When some people or some groups of people trying to be unique and different like the Hippies people will think they are disgusted. This is because power of conformity is very strong in the society. In every big city or even small town influence of the conformity were shown up. In The Outsiders, conformity is everywhere in this small town which is located in the south of U.S. Tulsa, Oklahoma. In this story are all about Greasers and Socials. The conformity in this story is showed up by the symbols that are described personality and social class of the characters in the story. In this story the conformity shows up mostly by the symbol.
One moment in the book when Darry lashes out on Ponyboy is when he comes home late one night. A quote I found from that night in the novel is “He didn’t use to be like that… we used to get along okay… before Mom and Dad died. Now he just can’t stand me” (Pg. 51). When Ponyboy says “Now he just can’t stand me,” it shows that he thinks Darry hates him but in reality, Darry has high expectations for Ponyboy because he gets good grades and just wants to keep him safe because their parents died so Darry is the like the parent now. Another quote I found that also shows Ponyboy really doesn’t like Darry is “He thinks I’m a pain in the neck. He likes Soda-everybody likes Soda-but he can't stand me I bet he wishes he could stick me in a home somewhere, and he’d do it, too, if soda’s let him.” (pg. 42). Just so you know, this was after the movies when Two-bit, Johnny, Marcia, and Cherry were walking home. So, I think this quote is also about how Ponyboy thinks Darry doesn’t like him because he says things like he thinks if Soda weren’t alive, Darry would just leave him which shows Ponyboy isn’t very fond of Darry. This evidence shows that Ponyboy has the thought that Darry dislikes him. Therefore, Ponyboy hates him because of the way he is treated.
In the beginning of the book Ponyboy thinks that all you can do to resist the Socs is to fight them. He even knows it’s a futile attempt to change their situation, but that’s all he thinks the greasers can do as he says: “And you can't win against them no matter how hard you try, because they've got all the breaks and even whipping them isn't going to
In the book the Outsiders, Ponyboy faces many conflicts, some had carried more significance than others. The author of this novel is S.E. Hinton. The main characters of this novel are Ponyboy Curtis, Sodapop Curtis, and Darrel Curtis (Darry). The Outsiders is novel about the wars between the two social classes formally known as Socs (The higher class/richer people) and the Greasers (The lower class/poorer blue collar workers.) This novel however is told from the perspective of the Greasers, more specifically a young boy at the bottom of a small gang or family of greasers. In the novel The Outsiders the character Ponyboy experience multiple conflicts with his family, his friends, and the law.
The Outsiders, written by S.E. Hinton was published in 1967. The Outsiders is about a fourteen year old named Ponyboy Curtis, the youngest member of a gang called the Greasers. The novel starts off with members of their rival gang, the Socs (short for socials), and they jump Ponyboy when he’s leaving a theater. Ponyboy’s brothers, Sodapop and Darry, and several other Greasers rescue Ponyboy and the Socs flee. The Socs are richer and they have a better impression than the Greasers. The main conflict in The Outsiders is man vs man and an example of this would be the rival gangs, the Greasers and the Socs. The two gangs don’t get along and members from both gangs fight each other like when Johnny and Bobby fought and Bobby ended up dying; Johnny was just defending himself.
First, when Darry slapped Pony, he felt so sad and worthless because he felt like Darry didn’t want him at home anymore. Darry and Pony don’t get along to well in the beginning of the book, but throughout their conflicts, they learn that they love each other very much. Another example is when Pony gets a letter from Soda when he was running away. Soda said that they miss Johnny and Pony very much and wish they would come home. Pony gets very emotional and sad because he misses them so much. Pony and Soda realize that they need each other. They love each other and couldn’t imagine life without them. Pony tells Johnny that they need to go home and turn themselves in for killing a Bob. Pony and Johnny did not want to do this, but it was the right thing. On the other hand, when Darry and Soda were protecting Pony from the fight with the Soc’s he knows that they will never hurt or fight with one another again.
“The Outsiders” identifies the 60’s, illustrating the violence between groups, often involving a group’s social class. For instance, the violent tensions between the Socs and Greasers lead to Bob’s death, Johnny’s death, as well as many injuries throughout both gangs. The book “The Outsiders” is written by S.E. Hinton and is portrayed through the eyes of a high school student in Tulsa, OK where S.E. Hinton grew up. Hinton began writing “The Outsiders” in 1965 at the age of 17 and the book was finally published in 1967 when she was 19. The difference in perspective upon the society and social class creates issues throughout “The Outsiders” and since the Socs and Greasers assume the problems will be solved with violence, they take action.
In S.E Hinton’s novel The Outsiders, the main character Ponyboy and the rest of the greasers not only face conflicts with their rival gang: the Socs, but also against each other and even as society as a whole. These obstacles were created due the fact that people don't realize that everyone has problems, this is a theme that Ponyboy learns throughout this story. Just like in real life, some conflicts will never be resolved as they are beyond their control. Over the course of the novel some conflicts will be settled, while some will stay the same or even become worse.
The ethical dilemmas and issues taken from the case are first, the lack of integrity. Curtis is helping Jackie to launch her singing career and helping her to find a nice house as well as assisting her in moving exemplifies self-interest (Ferrell, Fraedrich & Ferrell, 2013). Curtis also pursued a romantic relationship with Jackie that can also be viewed as having self-interest. There is also evidence presented of abusive and intimidating behavior. Curtis has created a hostile work environment by harassing Jackie with phone calls and in-person advances, thus, causing Jackie to be unable to perform. Leslie also exemplifies unethical behavior by lying to Jackie regarding her request for help in Curtis’s actions. Curtis used bribery
The quote “Conflict creates action, and action defines character” means how a simple conflict will lead to an action and depending on how the action is dealt with and is how people will “look” at the character. Conflict means a controversy between characters. The Outsiders is narrated by Ponyboy and his point of view, he is fourteen and apart of the Greasers. Darrel is 20, and Sodapop is 16, The three of them are brothers, they recently lost their parents in a car accident. In the beginning and in the end Ponyboy describes Paul Newman’s characteristics and how “perfect” Ponyboy thinks Paul Newman’s life is.
All fights come with a price. In The Outsiders, Ponyboy was walking home when he noticed the red corvair trailing him. He started to walk faster when some socs hopped out. “‘Need a haircut, greaser?’”(Page 5) The socs tried to kill Ponyboy, but his gang should up to save him.
A young adult novel’s audience often desires relatable characters and a meaningful plot that helps them to find resolutions to their own uncertainties concerning life. Many authors employ the literary technique realism to satiate these cravings. Today, there are some popular novels that attempt to imitate this, such as the coveted The Fault in Our Stars or Divergent. These selections, while widespread in the hands of young adult readers today, will not stand the test of time in the way that The Outsiders has, written by S. E. Hinton in 1967, has. This novel, both produced by and intended for teenagers, instead is a better candidate of realistic young adult fiction. Other selections, from Hinton’s era and from today, do not radiate the same
