Courage - according to the Oxford Dictionary courage is: the ability to do something that frightens one; bravery. OR: Strength in the face of pain or grief. In To Kill a Mockingbird acts of courage help us, as the audience, to understand the characters better.

The children initially admire acts of courage that are physical - such as Scout getting into a fight with Walter Cunningham on the first day school. This is because of society's views at that time: acts of violence (including war) are glamourised and praised if they can be justified. An example of a small act of courage that Scout and Jem admire is when Atticus shoots a local dog that has rabies and is mad, from quite a distance.
