Abigail and the girls go into court with their witchcraft accusations. After Mary Warren approaches, abby is given the chance to tell the truth and say she’s been pretending. But did she admit she was pretending? Of course not, her and the other girls act possessed saying that Mary Warren spirit is out to harm them. After the trial ended, abby breaks into Reu. Abigail Williams, a seventeen year old girl is the antagonist of this play because she tells lies and wrongfully accuses innocent people to hide her affair and to ultimately get John Proctor back. The Crucible by Arthur Miller, is a play about the Salem Witch Trials based off of the historic event in 1692, where many people fall victim to Abigail’s accusations. Her motivation to accuse is driven by her feelings for John Proctor and her determination to go to great lengths to steal Elizabeth's place as his wife. However, her plan to have John Proctor fails because of her careless actions. Abigail is considered as the evil villain of this play, because of her deceiving lies, her selfishness and her manipulativeness to satisfy her desires.
The characters in Arthur millers The Crucible can teach a lot about people. People can be horrible and terribly deceptive. When placed under pressures and after experiencing trauma peoples real character can come out. In the case of The Crucible Abigail is shown for what she really is. She gets a kind of power and this corrupts her to use the situation to have Elizabeth Proctor sent to jail. Abigail is not the only one who takes advantage of the
Abigail Williams lies and manipulates others to save her own reputation. After being questioned by her uncle, Abigail lies about whether or not she performed witchcraft. She deceives Parris when she says, “Not I, but Ruth and Tituba,” which makes him believe her lies (Miller I. 317-318). The way Abigail lies about the women doing witchcraft shows how far she will go to save her own skin. Abigail tells lies to weasel her way out of getting in trouble. She lies to Proctor about what happened in the woods with the other girls: “There is nothing more, I swear…” (Miller I. 155-156). Abigail tells Proctor that she is telling the truth; even though, Betty later calls her out on lying. After Abby reveals to Proctor what allegedly happened in the woods, she goes and tells Betty about this to cover up what actually happened, but then Betty calls her out on her lies by saying, “You drank blood, Abby…” (Miller.I.444). This shows that Abby lies to Proctor to make
Once Abigail is assigned as an official of the court she and the other girls immediately began deceitfully abusing their powers. The first major time we hear of Abigail try to abuse her power is when she accuses Elizabeth Proctor. The Info is revealed to us by Mary Warren “I Saved Your life today! … Somewhat mentioned. But I said I never see no sign you ever sent your spirit out to hurt no one, and seeing I do live so closely with you, they dismissed it”(Miller 59). Thought Mary didn’t we bluntly say it was Abigail due to the rules of the court it doesn't take Elizabeth long to figure out it was Abigail “[Abigail] wants me dead. I knew all week it would come to this! … she will cry me out
Although, Abigail is accusing innocent people for being witches, but the judges doesn't know that Abigail is lying because she want to hide her affair with John proctor. In the beginning of the play, Abigail first accuse Tituba for witchcraft. For example Abigail said “ she made me do it! She made betty do it!” (miller page 482). Abigail is telling Mr hale and Mr. parris that tituba is making abigail and betty to do witchcraft, but actually Abigail want tituba to make love potion for John proctor to love her. Everyone in salem town is believe her with big lies. Everyone is scared of Abigail because they can be accuse. Abigail and her friend are blaming others for witchcraft and pretending they are getting hurt. People are getting arrest or getting hang up because abigail and her friends doesn't like them. According to cheever “ There be so many cows wanderin’ the highroads, now their master are in jail and much disagreement who they will
Abigail put on an act, mimicking Mary Warrens every move as though her spirit was possessing the girls and could be found guilty of witchcraft. “Suddenly, from an accusatory attitude, her face turns, looking into the air above—it is truly frightened. ‘What is it, child?’ ‘I—I know not. A wind, a cold wind, has come.’ Her eyes fall on Mary Warren. ‘Abby!’ ‘Your Honor, I freeze!’ ‘They’re pretending!’… ‘Mary, do you send this shadow on me?’ ‘Lord, save me!’” (Miller p. 108-109). Abigail uses this in order to draw attention away from Danforth questioning if Abigail is only seeing illusions and not true spirits. Abigail uses the idea of witchcraft to repeatedly cover up her affair with John as well as uses it to an advantage to complete the envious attempt to kill
In the beginning of the play it is very clear that Abigail deserves some of the blame for the witchcraft rumors. When Betty is acting bewitched out of fear of facing consequences from her father, it is revealed that Abigail had tried to kill Goody Proctor by drinking blood charm. While she worked for him they had an affair. At that time she is still in love with him but he is trying to repair his marriage with Elizabeth Proctor. Abigail tries to kill Goody Proctor because Goody fired her and Abigail is jealous of her. She is jealous because she is in love with Proctor. If Proctor had been a good husband and never committed adultery with Abigail the events that started this could’ve been
In Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, Miller demonstrated that it was Abigail’s flaws- lust, jealousy, and mendacity- that led her to be responsible the most for the tragedy of the witch-hunt in Salem. The Crucible focuses of the finding of young girls and a slave messing around in the woods, trying to conjure spirits from the dead. Rather than admit to their actions and face the consequences, the girls accuse everyone else of the crimes they were guilty of. Abigail Williams is the person who caused much of the drama in this story. She bears much responsibility for everyone meeting with Tituba in the woods. Once Parris discovers this meeting, Abigail attempts to keep her actions a secret because it would possibly reveal her affair with Proctor. Abigail lies to cover up her affair with proctor, and to stop the charges of witchcraft in order to prevent the terrible punishments that go along with the accusations.
Abigail tries to manipulate all the girls who are accused into
Anyways Abigail friend named Tituba seemed to be a real witch because it seemed that people had proof she was . Tituba wanted Mister Parris killed because he would have slaves and white people belonging to him and I think Tituba was one of them. Tituba knew that the devil was going for the innocent flesh first because it was easier for him .Abigail wanted to be a part of Jesus again ,she seemed tired of dancing with the devil or doing his troubled work and she was too tired of everything he or the other witches would do . The whole village wanted to send them to court because the witches or the deficient to be witches didn't/don't anything just sway in the forest and they seem that they realized that Tituba was really a witch because he apparently k how to do witchcraft and I think that Abigail and Betty were learning from Tituba . Tituba didn't really want anything bad to happen , it seemed that he just wanted to do it for seeming entertaining for him and everybody in the village took it the wrong way and wanted them to be hung I believe or just wanted them to be punished
In The Crucible by Arthur Miller lying occurs many times, the main conflict is based off of a lie that started from a group of girls about witchcraft which caused 19 innocent people to be hung, a man pressed to death and 13 put into prison where mostly all of them died. Most people claim that lying is never the right thing to do but it can be at times. Lying is justifiable because it can delay suffering and because it can prevent somebody from harm; although some may argue that lying only causes more conflict and could come back to you to cause more problems , in truth, lying could be the reason why somebody is alive today.
Abigail is a decisive teenager who seeks people's pain in order to get her way. Abigail seeks not only power, but she also seeks the love and marriage of John Proctor. Abigail’s character nature consists of nearly total deception. Our first example of decisiveness given from Abigail is her first lie. The lie took place early in the novel and stated
Abigail lies in order to save herself from being executed and passes the blame to many others. After Abigail ‘confesses’ about what she was doing in the woods one night, Betty approaches her and tell her that she “drank blood”
In the story The Crucible, Abigail is the main character in how everything plays out all because she wanted another womans man. Abby used to work for the Proctor family. John proctor being the man she wanted. John had committed adultery with Abby and Elizabeth proctor, Johns wife, found out and fired her. This is probably the starting point of the event.
So, after the news that Abigail and the other girls’ outlandish actions begins to spread like a wildfire, the hysteria in the community take over. Abigail only contributes to the hysteria by telling lie after lie just to cover up her wrongdoings. Abigail is dreading telling the truth, which has triggered hysteria to a dangerous level that otherwise, would not have been achieved.
