The determinants of health that I believe make a huge impact on the small town of Franklinton, is its health services. Health services are one of the most important things to anyone no matter where you live; it is essential to survival. There are health care facilities available to those who live in Franklinton but there are not of great quality. They have two nursing home facilities available to residents but they treat their patients horrible and do not look after them like they should. There is a Washington Parish Health Unit located in Franklinton but it is more for those who are looking to get testing for STDs or apply for WIC for their child or children. There is the Riverside Medical Center, which is the hospital of Franklinton. This
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is the largest, integrated health care system in the United States of America. It is a hierarchical organization led by a secretary, multiple undersecretaries, and three reporting subordinate administrations. The VA is responsible for managing health care, benefits, and services to the almost 20 million veterans of the armed forces.

A major influence on health in a community is the availability of services and opportunities within the neighborhood. Public health can be further influenced by the social environments. Accessibility to health care along with education and employment opportunities are fundamental factors to be considered (Riegelman & Kirkwood, 2015). These elements create both advantages and disadvantages for those living within the neighborhood. If we want to improve public health outcomes, we must consider and evaluate these along with many other contributing factors.
Social determinants of health can be referred to as the living conditions that can affect an individuals’s health. Some of these determinants of health include; qualify of life during infancy, education, employment, working conditions, food security, gender, health care services, housing, income and its distribution, social safety net, social exclusion, employment security and aboriginal status (Raphael, D., 2010, Pg 148). Those with higher socio-economic status; such as the upperclass and the upper middle-class, tend to possess a majority of resources, as opposed to those with lower socio-economic status; such as the lower middle-class and the lower class. This situation is the basis of the concept of social inequality; income inequality
Poverty and war are two social determinants of health that interact directly to shape an individuals life. Eldon Starlight in Richard Wagamese’s Medicine Walk can be identified as an alcoholic who struggles with mental injuries. Many social determinants of health impact Eldon’s health and quality of life, shaping who he is. As we examine the effects of poverty and war we come to understand their influences on Eldon’s life. Poverty and war can have permanently altering effects on an individual’s life.
Social inequities in health result from unequal distribution of social, economic, cultural and historical determinants. It is vital to identify these factors to reduce health inequalities and to improve health status of people. This essay depicts information on two social determinants of health that affect different vulnerable groups in terms of their socioeconomic position and ethnicity.
Access to Medical Care Services – The CDC states that determinants of health are “factors that contribute to a person’s current state of health” Teitelbaum & Wilensky, p.124, 2017) The biggest factor to the current state of an individual’s health is access to medical care. Without medical care services health issues will linger as they will be put off and never addressed until the issue becomes serious.
Assessing communities by Wards have been articulated through a set of constructs, referred to as social determinants of health. Social determinants of health consider how neighborhood and social conditions collectively impact outcomes on individual and community levels. Access to health protective resources like clean air and water, healthy food, recreational areas, high quality education, employment wages, and decent housing have an impact on the health of individuals living in the community. Therefore, if good health is not shared equally in Ward 2 by Jacksonians, then understanding these factors that contribute to health and differences in health status is essential to identifying and implementing solutions to this challenge. The social determinants of health have been said to be causes of a variety of mental and physical illnesses. There are five main social determinants of health, in agreement with the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, and they include: "education, economic stability, health and health care, neighborhood and built environment, and social and community context." These five identified factors shape and influence everyone within a community and assist with understanding health across various levels of the socioecological background.1-2
Health determinants are the factors that can have a positive or negative impact on a person’s health. Many things can affect how healthy we are, from a complex interplay between macro to molecular influence to influences from society (for example, the prevalence of drug and alcohol use), to individual factors such as genetic make-up. Education, employment, income, lifestyle, psychosocial and physiological factors can also influence a person’s health and wellbeing. Health can also be significantly affected, and modified to some extent, by the quality and timeliness of the health care services we receive, including preventative health care such as education, screening and immunization.
The barriers of mental healthcare access are a notable issue for many Canadians and Canadian youth. Nearly 20% of Canadian youth suffer from a mental illness or disorder, however, only 1 in 5 youth who have a mental illness receive the appropriate mental health care (Canadian Mental Health Association, 2014). These barriers may include structural barriers such as the uninsured costs of mental health services, the long waiting list for services that are insured and attitudinal factors such as fear of stigmatization (Sareen et al. 2007). The barriers of the mental healthcare available to our youth may be a contributing factor as to why suicidal death is the second leading cause of death among Canadians aged 15-24 (Canadian Mental Health Association,
these issues though those might be temporary. A final solution will have to be a national policy change in immigration, however, until then we could pursue some international options to aid undocumented immigrants in the United States.
The book The Devil In the White City by Erik Larson re-tells the story of Chicago’s World Fair, while H.H. Holmes, also known as “America’s first serial killer”, emerges as a dark force within the fair. Switching back and forth between the experiences of the head fair administrator, Burnham, and the other directors along with the evils of Holmes, the reader begins to understand the world of tragedy and crime that lies behind the public’s excitement. From a devastating storm to the deaths of multiple builders, suspense builds as tragedy is followed by more tragedy. Through the use of contrasting ideas and ethical clauses highlighted by symbolisms and descriptions within the book, Erik Larson creates an underlying argument that one’s pursuit of pride and success often causes destruction and comes at the price of another’s well-being.
Social determinants of health are social, economic and physical factors that affect the health of individuals in any given population. There are fourteen social determinants of health but Income is perhaps the most important of these because it shapes living conditions, influences health related behaviors, and determines food security. In Canada, people with lower incomes are more susceptible to disease/ conditions, higher mortality rate, decreased life expectancy and poorer perceived health than people with high incomes. In numerous Canadian studies and reports, there has been more emphasis on health being based on an individual’s characteristics, choices and behaviours, rather than the role that income plays as a social determinant of health. Although Canada has one of the highest income economies in the world and is comprised of a free health care system, many low income families are a burden on the system because of the physical and mental health issues influenced by income insecurity. Low income individuals are heavier users of health care services because they have lower levels of health and more health problems than do people with higher incomes. This essay will address income as a social determinant of health in three key sections: what is known on the issue, why the issue is important and how can health and public policies address the issue. The main theme that runs through the essay is the income related health inequalities among low income groups compared to
I always knew what I wanted in life. I liked to plan out my future as much as I could from what I was going to wear the next day to planning my university degrees to planning my wedding. I am futuristic, its one of my strengths. Planning my future is fun for me. I can tell you what university I would like to attend, what my major and minor will be in university, the city I want to live in, the dogs I would like to get when I move out, all the details of my pre-planned wedding, and what my children’s names would be.
