Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Duality Similar to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, all people struggle concealing their second nature. Everyone faces the problem of duality because of the need to explore and be someone that they have never been, and to cover up who they really are. People struggle concealing their second nature because of their need to let loose, and be someone that they never could have been in their everyday life. This is shown when Dr Jekyll transforms into Mr. Hyde and says that he “knew himself, at the first breath of this new life, to be wicked…” (Stevenson 64).
The Strange Case of Jekyll and Hyde was a novel written by Robert Louis Stevenson in 1886. Romeo and Juliet was written by the great William Shakespeare, and is considered a piece of classic literature! So how are these two connected people may ask. The answer is duality. According to Dictionary.com duality means an instance of opposition or contrast between two concepts or aspects of something. Robert Louis Stevenson states "man is not truly one, but truly two". What does he mean by this? For example, one day someone meets someone and that person looks perfectly fine, but the other person does not really know how the other person feels, or what the other person has gone threw. In reality that person has been living there whole life full of hatred scared to hurt someone till one day someone bothers that person, and that person reacts in a very bad manner because the other person was bothering the other person and does something wrong that no one would expect from that person. Then no one can believe what that person did is true because that person had never done anything bad in there whole life. This is what duality means to robert louis stevenson. Everyone has to accept who they are what they do, how they feel, and how they think. If someone has a bad side they should not hide it they should just accept that part of them and learn to live with it because if they hide it and they try to put it away and one day the bad side takes over the person and that person explodes in front of everyone then every one would have a very different perspective of that person.. However if that person learns how to control their bad side and live with it then they will not have to hide that part of
Personality is a big part of literature and our daily lives. It describes who we are and how others judge us. For example, Robert Louis Stevenson portrays the duality of human nature in the short story “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” by describing that Jekyll has two sides (the other being Hyde). Stevenson does this through contrast and allegory and believes everyone can have two sides to themselves and be who they are, despite what others may think.

From the beginning of the time to the end, good or evil in men, duality, is being represented everywhere. The theme of duality is also depicted in 1800 literature. Duality, good or evil in men, is split up into two different people when Dr. Jekyll did his experiment.
The narrative, ‘The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde' by Robert Louis Stevenson is about a scientist who creates a drug that allows him to switch between two different beings. Stevenson's descriptions of London during the day and night and his use of pathetic fallacies, help create a tense atmosphere. As the plot progresses, we notice that Stevenson's descriptions become darker, as evil is taking over. He describes London during the day at a lighter judgement, and Dr. Jekyll’s purity is being represented by the atmosphere at the start of the novel. On the contrary, the shadows and casting fog represent Hyde and the evil that emanates within him.
There are many different types of religions one could follow and many different standards/rituals religious groups could commit to. For example, a religion that is dualistic admits not only that the universe contains good and evil or light and darkness, but that these forces are at constant war and only at the end will good finally conquer evil. Christianity, the religion Robert Stevenson was born into rejects dualism and preaches a monistic origin to the universe from one, single spiritual being that created everything freely. In the novel “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”, the author Robert Stevenson creates a hero in Dr. Jekyll who is aware of the evil in his own being and is sick of the duplicity in his life. Dr. Jekyll also was troubled by his society and ended up giving into temptation.
Gothic literature often depicts narratives, characters and symbolic elements that ambiguously move between reality and transcend to the possibility of the supernatural through suspense and fear. This ambiguous shift provokes one to examine and question their morality and nature, threatening to disrupt the way each reader perceives themselves. Gothic texts such as Strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson and The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde are both exceptional examples of where the shift between reality and the possibility of the supernatural raise moral questions about humanity, through suspense and fear. Both novels also explore notions of the uncanny, an experience explored by Sigmund Fraud who claims that experiences of the uncanny arise either when a
Duality, by definition, is the quality or condition of being dual; an instance of opposition or contrast between two concepts or two aspects of something. Jekyll & Hyde embodies this in some sense. In the novella, duality of human nature typically takes place in Jekyll’s transformation into Hyde. It is both a physical and psychological transformation. They are opposites at the best, but it is not truly so. The transformation is just Doctor Jekyll letting out his inner inhibitions. Hyde is the way that Jekyll lets out his anger without having to feel regret. According to Ferrer-Medina, Mr. Hyde is the hybrid creature that is able to exist on both planes at once.
