The book The Giver is a neat book. We all know some of us cry when reading or watching The Giver. The Giver takes place in a little society with so many rules. I mean who goes and killed babies and old people (evil). The Giver utopia or dystopia? In my opinion I think the giver is a dystopia because you will have no choices, you will go through pain and if you become a nurturer you will kill babies.

Can the society in The Giver be considered an utopia or dystopia? Lois Lowry, the author of The Giver got her idea in 1992 when she went to go visit her father. She then discovered that her father was losing his memory, but her mother wasn’t. This then made Lowry questions if live would be easier if all the painful memories disappeared. The Giver’s community is a dystopia because there is limited freedom, people of the community are oblivious to what is happening around them, and the Committee of Elders are abusing their power.

To the people it seems perfect, amazing, nothing wrong. In reality they are not living just to live, repeat the same things over and over again. The Giver, by Lois Lowry, is an amazing book. It presents a society that tries to create a perfect world of harmony and peace. Unfortunately, individuality is lost from the people and their emotions are restricted. They are all living in a world of ignorance created by the author and continue to do so willingly. In doing so, Lois Lowry portrays a dystopian world, instead of a perfect one, by creating a society where individuality is lost and emotions are not important. Some people think this world is perfect and could work in modern life, while others can clearly see how this is nothing but a controlling dystopia that would ultimately fail.

However, as the novel progresses, it is shown that the community actually has many downsides. Leaders create utopias hoping that it will help their citizens´, but perfect settings can often lead to a dystopia.

The characters in The Giver are dystopian characters,the community has so many rules and the people do not even care about the repetitive rules. The people in the community are dystopian characters. The Giver certainly represents a dystopia because the community itself is definition if a dystopia. A dystopia is a place where people are restricted from the real world with boundaries, it is a place where everything that occurs is not ordinary and it is a place where people are forced to do things to suppress life. I know that the community in The Giver is a dystopian society because the citizens have to go through a period called Sameness. In this period of sameness the citizens do not get to choose anything they want to do like their job or how many children they should have and they kill people they feel shouldn't be there anymore. The author describes how only the Giver and the new receiver (jonas) knows about what is happening in their reality, and they are the only one’s that can see every extravagant color and feel pain. Therefor, every other citizen can not see color or feel pain the citizens think that everything is perfect and they have the most wonderful life. The Giver strives to be a utopian society but the still can’t be perfect. The Giver is a book with the main character being Jonas, Jonas has no last name; however, no one else had the last name in their society. The Giver is a Dystopian because they get their memories erased, they are all equal, and they get assigned jobs when they are 12.
