Emotional Neglect in Young Men
I often hear it in movies and from parents talking to their adolescent son, “Be a man.” To me, that seems like a way for an annoyed parent to try to control their child and make them strive for maturity. But what do simple sayings like this really do to a boy? By telling him to be that man that he isn’t, he thinks that he needs to put on an act, and in turn, his young and childlike emotions are suppressed and not dealt with. Fathers often tell their sons to “be a man” because of their lack of tolerance towards their (obvious) childish behavior. They think it will make a child mature, but in reality, it puts a mask over that child. It is detrimental to boys to teach them to hide their feelings. The first five years of a child’s life are the most important for their brain development, their experiences during this time shape both their social and emotional skills, as well as their learning abilities.(“Child Development and Early Learning”)

The NCANDS (National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System) classifies child neglect as “A type of maltreatment that refers to the failure by the caregiver to provide needed, age-appropriate care although financially able to do so or offered financial or other means to do so.” ("Child Neglect.")
Emotional neglect is often overshadowed by child abuse, in the form of physical abuse. Seeing as it has more of a noticeable and gruesome effect on a child, it’s seen as worse than emotional neglect. In no way am I suggesting that hurting a child is okay, but the long term effect of this is deleterious to a
Children are our future. They will shape future generations to come and the way our society deals with difficulties. One difficulty that is currently being addressed is child neglect. Child neglect is the most prevalent form of child maltreatment (Sedlak et al 2010). Neglect includes physical neglect, emotional neglect, medical neglect and educational neglect. Although there may or may not be physical symptoms, neglect may be harder to identify right away. Neglect is often referred to as an act of omission as the parent or caregiver does not intentionally cause harm to the child, but the absence of care puts the child at risk of harm (Sedlak et al 2010). In 2007, the cost of child abuse and neglect was $103.8 billion, which includes immediate
Neglect is the failure to meet a child’s basic physical and or psychological needs, which is likely to affect the child’s health or development. Neglect is when a parent or carer fails to provide adequate food, clothing, shelter (including exclusion from home or abandonment), medical care, or protection from physical and emotional harm or danger. Additionally failure to ensure access to education or to look after a child because the carer is under the influence of alcohol or drugs, is considered as Neglect.
Physical/Emotional neglect is the failure to provide a child with basic needs, including adequate food, shelter, clothing, or necessary medical care. Neglect also exist when an adult fails to provide adequate supervision of a child as when a child is left either unsupervised or in the care of someone unable to supervise the child. Furthermore, neglect occurs when a person creates a substantial risk of physical injury to a child by other than accidental means which would be likely to cause death, disfigurement, impairment of physical or emotional health, or loss or impairment of any bodily function
According to National Clearinghouse on Child Abuse and Neglect Information, medical neglect is the failure by parents or
Child abuse can be performed in many different ways. Unfortunately, abuse occurs in many households today. Neglect is a form of abuse other than physical, that can effectively harm a child. Neglection is characterized by the failure of taking proper care of a child. This form of abuse is often overlooked as we can see in the book “To Kill a Mockingbird.”
The issue of child neglect is one of the most current forms of child maltreatment especially in the United States. According to the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System, child neglect is referred to as a kind of maltreatment which relates to the failure of a caregiver to offer the needed, age-appropriate care, despite the fact that the parent may be financially stable to do so (Conte 13). Neglect in many instances is described by an ongoing pattern that relates to lack of care and is observed by individuals in close contact with a child.
According to the United States Federal Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA), child abuse and neglect are defined at as: "Any recent act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caretaker which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse, or exploitation." This definition, according to the Children's Bureau of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, provides the minimum range of behaviors for abuse and neglect; but, each state may provide their own definition. However, focusing on neglect, the Child Welfare Information Gateway (2013) suggests neglect could include physical, medical, educational, or emotional needs of a child not being met. For example, in terms of physical neglect, a parent or caregiver may not feed a child food regularly which could result in
To conclude, the final form of abuse is neglect. Neglect is defined by the U.S. Department of Health as failure to provide, by those responsible for care, custody, and control of the child, failure to provide the proper or necessary support, education required by law, nutrition or medical, surgical, or any other care necessary for the child’s well-being. Neglect is the leading cause of child abuse and covers a broad range of acts that are seen as child maltreatment. Neglect can be in the form of physical, emotional/ psychological, medical or education. Many of these seem to overlap other forms of abuse but can be distinguished when clearly defined. Neglect is the failure to provide, causing it to be more indirect than physical or sexual abuse.

Neglect is the "failure to provide for a child's physical needs" (Arizona Child Abuse Info Center, 2016). For example, if a child is experiencing a lack of supervision, inappropriate housing, or shelter, inadequate provision of food, inappropriate clothing, abandonment, and denial of medical care, it must be reported by the Mandated Reporter (Arizona Child Abuse Info Center, 2016).
Child neglect is a continuous failure to provide a child with basic needs and it is also the most common form of child abuse. Child neglect has been categorized by professionals into four different categories physical neglect, emotional neglect, medical neglect, and educational neglect. There are also different reasons why a parent would resort to child neglect, different causes for it. Child neglect is known as very emotionally scaring and can cause long term mental damage to a child, professionals have suggested treatments to help maltreated children move past their childhood and learn from it.
Child neglect is another form of child abuse, but focuses more on the act of omission rather than the act of commission. According to the Center for Disease Control (2016), child neglect is defined as, the failure to provide for a child's basic physical, emotional, or educational needs or to protect a child from harm or potential harm. Forms of neglect include educational neglect, physical neglect, and emotional neglect (Iannelli, 2010; Leeb et al., 2007). Child neglect is not always deliberate abuse; however, more often than not it yields similar detrimental consequences as with intentional acts of child
What does it mean to be a man? In many cases the definition of a man is someone who is strong and does not show a lot of emotions. The media has many stereotypical meanings of what a man is, also these stereotypes mold men into what is being portrayed in social media. Family values also have a huge impact on how young men act. In some circumstances, father’s do not nurture their son’s as much as young girls are nurtured at young ages. This then leads young men to not handle their emotions very well. Traditionally when a father has a son they are more tough on boys. While, if a father were to have a daughter they are treated completely different. Fathers are highly overprotective of their daughters while for their son’s, they don’t care as
