Emotional Neglect in Young Men

I often hear it in movies and from parents talking to their adolescent son, “Be a man.” To me, that seems like a way for an annoyed parent to try to control their child and make them strive for maturity. But what do simple sayings like this really do to a boy? By telling him to be that man that he isn’t, he thinks that he needs to put on an act, and in turn, his young and childlike emotions are suppressed and not dealt with. Fathers often tell their sons to “be a man” because of their lack of tolerance towards their (obvious) childish behavior. They think it will make a child mature, but in reality, it puts a mask over that child. It is detrimental to boys to teach them to hide their feelings. The first five years of a child’s life are the most important for their brain development, their experiences during this time shape both their social and emotional skills, as well as their learning abilities.(“Child Development and Early Learning”) …show more content…

The NCANDS (National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System) classifies child neglect as “A type of maltreatment that refers to the failure by the caregiver to provide needed, age-appropriate care although financially able to do so or offered financial or other means to do so.” ("Child Neglect.")
Emotional neglect is often overshadowed by child abuse, in the form of physical abuse. Seeing as it has more of a noticeable and gruesome effect on a child, it’s seen as worse than emotional neglect.
