Can life with a dung beetle be all you’ve ever wanted? Well, in Franz Kafka’s short novel “The Metamorphosis”, Gregor Samsa, the main character, dedicates his entire life to working a job he absolutely hates to provide for a family who in return gives him nothing. When he wakes up one morning, he notices that he has transformed into a giant beetle. This doesn’t seem to faze him since his main priority is work, but throughout the story Gregor begins to find himself and finally develop an identity than he didn’t have prior to his transformation. He also begins to have a better understanding of the people around him. This short story is great example of existentialism. In part two of the novel, Gregor had just woken up from very deep sleep and looked through the crack in his door for any signs of his family, but the apartment was silent. He wasn’t used to this and he began to think about his life before his transformation. Gergor said, “He felt very proud that he has been able to provide such a life in so nice an apartment for his parents and sister” (Kafka 21). This just shows that Gregor is indeed a very responsible man. Even though he absolutely detests his job, he knows that he has to keep it because it’s the right thing to do. Before his transformation, his main concern in life was providing for his family. Even after he transforms into a beetle, the only thought on his mind is “how and I going to be able to provide for them now?” This just shows Gregor’s dedication and loyalty to his ungrateful family. When considering a potential life partner, responsibility should be the top quality one should look for. It is a great quality to have because it shows the other person that you are reliable.
