Have you ever been scared, or been filled with fear? If you haven’t, then you are one lucky human being. Some people might ask “What exactly is fear?” Well fear is an emotion that is unpleasant that no one wants to feel. Fear makes you feel threaten, also sometimes you feel frantic. But sometimes people feel over flown with fear and makes us scared. When people feel darkness, the unknown and scared our imagination will overflow with fear. Often times unknowing can cause terrible fear, sometimes it also is too late just like in Julio Cortazar’s short story “House Taken Over”. For example, in Cortazar story “House Taken Over” he describes that a brother and a sister that lived in a family house that has been in there family for years, is being
Fear. Fear Is not just being afraid of that Clown that just follows you around on halloween night scaring everybody in sight. Fear is the emotion in the back of your mind that torments you every waking moment. It tells you what to say and keeps you from letting things out, even when sometimes the best thing for you is to let it out. “Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration.” quoted by unknown.
In the “House Taken Over”, Julio Cortzar creates fear with uncertainty. It is about a nightmare he had when something took over the house he and his sister lived in. Firstly, he created uncertainty fear when he said, “They’ve taken over the back part”.(Cortzar 40). He never says who took it over or what was happening to them which created some weird feelings, like wanting to know who did it. Secondly, they just act like it is no big deal that someone or something is taking over their house. “In that case… we’ll have to live on this side.” (Cortzar 40). Lastly, when they got their side taken, Irene just said, “They’ve taken over our section.” (Cortzar 41). They were not caring that everything was being taken over and as a reader thinking do
Fear is an unpleasant often strong emotion caused by anticipation or awareness of danger. Fear helps people recognize and respond to dangerous situations. There are two different types of fear. Healthy fear, which has a protective function and unhealthy fear which can lead to exaggerated behaviors. The soldiers in “The Things They Carried” carried many different things but the one thing that looms in the darkness is fear.
Fear is a feeling created in a response to a perceived danger. Fear can produce pleasure, heighten awareness, be in the form of phobia, a fear of the unknown and an instinctual response to danger.
I will present today the reasons why I chose this short story called “House Taken Over” by Julio Cortazar. A story not related directly with my culture which is Dominican but it is Hispanic which could be the same in some aspects. First of all, this is a story set in Argentina and it centers on a brother and his sister. The siblings lived in a big family home, which has been in the family for generations. Both of them are in their forties and have never been married. They spend their days cleaning and then doing what makes them happy. She knits all day and the brother loves to read French Literatures. The following quote would be a physical memory of the brother remember his days in his house “It was a pleasant to take a lunch and commune with the great hollow, silent house, and it was enough for us just to keep it clean. We ended up thinking, at times, that that was what had kept us from marrying. Irene turned down two suitors for no particular reason, and Maria Esther went and died on me before we could manage to get engaged” (Cortazar, p.689). One night they heard noises and they refused to go where the noises are originated from, therefore they decided to leave the house and basically left us with the question of who took over their house? I made some connections between this story and my culture back to my childhood. All those anecdotes that my parents and grandparents used to tell me about the way how people lived before and actually now. The FEAR always has been
Everybody has a different perspective on fear and everybody is affected differently. The Mental Health Foundation stated that, “Fear can last for a short time and then pass but it can also last much longer and stay with us. In some cases it can take over our lives, affecting appetite, sleep, and concentration for long periods of time. Fear stops us from travelling, going to work or school, or even leaving the house.” This quote shows that fear does not affect people as much as it does to others. Although, fear can affect people for a long time which can cause them to stay isolated from others. There are many types of fears and some examples of fears include: the fear of the number 13, the fear of spiders, the fear of heights, and many others. There are hundreds of fears and many people have these fears and everybody is affected differently.
Fear is just an Illusion; One that most innocent people can not control. Fear comes to a person when the person does not know what to do and is in an helpless position or in other words insecure. Unfortunately according to many sources a lot of human fear is based on social anxieties and threats. When someone puts one in a situation the person receiving the situation can not control it triggers hyperactivity in the amygdala which causes them to think irrationally. Without knowing what to do these innocent souls end up making the wrong decision and possibly ruin their lives.
Fear is something everyone feels at some point in their life. Fear is a feeling that your body produces in dangerous, threatening, or scary situations. It is the ability to identify danger and make a choice to either confront that fear or flee from the situation. Why do we human act in strange ways when reacting to fear in a negative way. The definition of fear is an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat. Fear is easy to overcome. You just have to push the fear out of your mind and block it out. When I was nine years old I use to be extremely scared of roller coasters. Then one day i was at WonderWorks in Destin, Florida and there was this ride in there where you had to pedal it to go upside down.
Fear is a feeling induced by experience, perceived danger, or watching a frightening traumatic accident. The fear responses arise from the perception of danger and ultimately a change in behaviour, such as fleeing, or hiding or from perceived traumatic events. Every person has fears and different fears may be different adaptations that have been useful in our evolutionary past. I have fears too, and sometime, I feel embarrassed to intersperse my fear with others.
The definition of fear is an unpleasant emotion resulting in being afraid of someone or something that is a dangerous threat. However, fear can come in many forms and affect people in several different ways. Fear is evident in all areas of life. Everyone experiences fear whether the outcome is positive or negative. Fear is no doubt inevitable. For example, whenever you have to present a speech, you may fear ridicule or judgement. Or when you are walking to your car late at night by yourself, you fear many dangerous situations that can happen. According to Mary C. Lamia in “The Complexity of Fear” in Psychology Today, fear in terms of psychology is described as the fear of the unknown, fear of death, and catastrophic fear. Mary C. Lamia has found
Fear is something that large amounts of people have encountered at least once at some point in their lives. It has been said to have caused a variety of outcomes, many of them being largely negative. Therefore, it is a common human response to react to fear by counteracting it with positivity and/or success. The idea people have of what fear is depends on the person. In the article “How Fear Works”, for example, fear is defined as a “chain reaction in the brain that starts with a stressful stimulus and ends with the release of chemicals” (Layton 1). The website “Psychology Today” defines fear another way, calling it “a vital response to physical and emotional danger” ("Fear Paranoia”). There are several other definitions people have on the
According to my dictionary, Fear is an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat. When the word "fear" comes to my mind, I think of an emotion that's caused by a bad situation. There are many things in this world that put fear in me. My greatest fears are computer viruses, thugs, sick people, and clowns. Each of these fears make me very scared and give me goosebumps.
