“Finding metaphors in hit songs and poems” by Melissa Kelly shows how singers use poetry in modern music. The article shows multiple songs and their use of metaphors. The text states, “There is more poetry in pop music than many people expect.” Artists like Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley and Justin Timberlake use poetry in their songs. In Michael Jackson’s song “Human Nature”, he talks about New York City, also called the Big Apple. The lyrics state, “If this town is just an apple, then let me take a bite.” Another example is in Justin Timberlake’s song “Can’t Stop the Feeling”. He says, “I got that sunshine in my pocket, got that good soul in my feet.” This shows the he feels happy when he dances. In both of these songs, they use a metaphor,
Mythological allusions can be found in almost every form of publication, even in songs. One example of an allusion being in a song is from the song Burn by Lin-Manuel Miranda as a part of the musical Hamilton. Hamilton is a hip hop musical telling the story of one of the United States founding fathers, Alexander Hamilton. The story goes from his marriage to his wife to his death. This song in particular expresses Hamilton’s wife’s, Eliza, reaction to the release of Hamilton’s affair with another woman.
¨Bright SIde¨ by Mike Stud is a song about his fame. The theme of this song is, work your hardest and you will succeed¨Cause me and all my guys just look at the bright side, If you're not in the right mind, then it ain't the right time¨(Mike Stud). This quote means that him and his crew work hard and look at the good things, if you don't have the right mindset then don't join them. ¨Better watch your bae like Hasselhoff¨(Mike Stud). This lyric is an example of a simile and it relates to my theme because he worked hard and he can get any girl. ¨Views keep on climbing the more that they play us¨(Mike Stud). This line is an example of personification. This relates to my theme because his group is working hard and it's paying off with more
Listening to the lyrics of your favorite song you automatically start to have a connection with that song. Then the song starts to represent you and your life because of the lyrics. Some songs show about being a fighter, having freedom, or just being you. There's a billion of songs out there and there's a billion of people who connect with those songs. Usually the most common reason why some songs represent people is by their past experience. For me some songs represent me because I decided to follow my dreams, living in the moment, and get right back up.
As a growing number of teens use technology on a daily basis, teenagers are reading less poetry. Accordingly, they are listening to more and more music. Numerous examples of poetic merit can be found in music at their fingertips. Thus, it is safe to argue that song lyrics are today’s main form of poetry. “Rocky Mountain High” by John Denver and Mike Taylor is an excellent example of this, for it includes figurative language, imagery, and a thematic statement. All of which are elements of poetic merit.
Shallow lyrics that fail to evoke much thought can be detrimental to a listener's intellectual health. Many developed countries have seen declines in reading proficiency and the superficial
The next type of figurative language I found was repetition. Repetition is when something is repeated over and over again to show that it is important or to draw attention to it. “When we were young” is repeated at least 10 times in the whole song. The artist did that to make a point. This person she is looking at brings her back to all the memories they had together when they were young.
Songs and song lyrics can take many different forms. Like poetry, they tend to use many different literary elements to convey a story. While most songs don't necessarily have a rhyme scheme like some poems, they do however use elements such as imagery, diction, and many more elements that can be found in poetry. The four songs “Rule Britannia”, “Land of Hope and Glory”, “Waltzing Matilda”, and “We are the Boys from old Florida” demonstrate the use of poetic elements to tell a story.
Music is a universal way in which people connect, and it does this through its use of literary devices to make the songs meaningful while still appealing. The song, “Wait and See,” uses literary devices like similes and metaphors to contribute to the theme of society’s mistakes and their impacts on the
A common theme among many scholars is modern poetry lacks poetic merit. The modern version of poetry is more often than not, found as music and more specifically as lyrics opposed to stanzas. “Traditional” poetry is known for its poetic merit; however, modern poetry, music, also has elements that can be found in traditional poetry. Poetic merit usually refers to the use of numerous poetic elements: figurative language, imagery, symbolism, allusions, etc. Though scholars may regard music as lacking in poetic merit, the song “Glory” by John Legend and Common proves otherwise through its use of symbolism, alliteration, and allusions to put forth its emotional lyrics that depict the struggles of the Civil Rights Movement.
Metaphors are used in both texts to show the feelings of
Songs, used to create messages, give singers the ability to speak about concerns that are relevant in the current everyday life. A powerful ways songwriters achieve this is by applying the use of imagery. Lyricists use this help readers of literary works to understand specific ideas that the writer is trying to convey. By using symbolism in songs, singers can discuss issues in ways that connect with the listener on a deeper level. Using this method in songwriting is crucial when discussing important subjects; influencing the public in a way that is not direct and more effective. In “ Don’t You Cry For Me,” songwriter Cobi uses repeated images of trees and individuals hanging as metaphors for his feelings towards facing injustice. It is through
The words so “bring it right hear” and “bring it over hear” giving the meaning of the character expressing emotion and expressions. The Poetic device affects this song because the devices shows the similarities of things that are non-alike objects. The definition of a Metaphor is a- figure of speech that identifies something as being the same as some unrelated thing for rhetorical effect, thus highlighting the similarities between the two animals. Also the poetic device impacted the song by its similarities, the differences, and the rhetorical effect.
The songs poetic devices are I think I’m losing my mind which is an hyperbole because it is an exaggeration of something it could also be a metaphor since it’s comparing two unlike things without using like or as.

Many metaphors are used in different songs so the artist can describe how their feeling or how two different people are alike. As Selena Gomez states in this song, “You are thunder and I am the lighting.” , is a metaphor explaining two people that are different but have something in common. Most artists include at least one metaphor in their songs, to describe two different kinds of people or things without exactly telling them who those two people are and what they do. So “ You are the thunder and i am the lighting”, she is referring to the one she loves and stating that they work together, as thunder and lighting are not the same but have something in common.
