The American Dream is that the ideal that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative.

What is the American dream? The American Dream to me would be a family, loyal husband, good paying job and most of all my health. But my perspective of the American Dream and other people/authors perspective could be viewed very differently. Frederick Douglass and F. Scott Fitzgerald both have very different views of their American Dream.

There are many aspects to the American Dream. I’m going to talk about three stories the “Declaration of Independence”, “Letters for an American Farmer”, and finally “A Worn Path.” The “Declaration of Independence” by Thomas Jefferson is about the dream of being a free country without usurpations from a tyrant, and unalienable rights to the people. At the end of the “Declaration of Independence” it says, “And for the support of the declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor”(Jefferson 143). The American dream doesn’t come without a price, up to this day we have to fight, and work for our liberty and happiness to protect it.

Going for a goal will have its obstacles, but one of the biggest and most difficult things to overcome is other people. Examples of crushed dreams can be found in the books Of Mice and Men, The Old Man and the Sea, The Jungle and A Raisin in the Sun. In each of these books, the perception of the American Dream is different, but it is not possible in all of these cases because of society.

What is the American Dream? America has evolved from a struggling nation to become a world power through its huge economic growth. Driven by the principles of independence, self-reliance, and freedom. Americans have had so many opportunities to accomplish their goals. To many, the American Dream is to have freedom and the opportunity to pursue financial freedom. To others, such as Gatsby, in The Great Gatsby, the American dream is happiness. He is driven by his dreams, trying to find what will make him happy. Gatsby seeks happiness through love. The belief that a perfect world is within his grasp drives his character to be successful. Without dreams Gatsby would lose his sense of purpose in life. The pursuit of the American dream is a paradox. Achieving it is not possible, but without it, life will lose its purpose.

For some the American dream is the value of hard work. To others it's a huge emphasis on material possessions. So, the American dream is no longer the American dream. It is a dream that anyone and everyone can relate to. This dream is the idea of having what ever you want. May it be material goods, ideas and values, or freedoms and rights. This idea also represents the uniqueness of America. It is a dream a lot of people around the world don't get to enjoy;

For some, it meant a very big opportunity to make their life better, otherwise the American Dream equaled to whole life. According to the film named “the Pursuit of Happiness”, the American Dream is a dream which promised a better future for someone who’s sacrificed their most. In my opinion, the American Dream is the precious dream which gives us beliefs and opportunities to get our religious freedom and an out and away life. I base my belief on the movies and sources that we’d seen and also my own life experience.
