Gandhi was a peaceful protester that was very defiant to the British law. The methods he used were simple, effective, and easy. He would protest in a non-violent, non-cooperated way to get more freedom from the British government. He wouldn´t have any violence against the British even though the British had really harsh laws. For example in the movie, he made every indian not work for the British. That caused the British to not lose money and they immediately gave the people what they wanted. When Gandhi was told he´s going to jail he would simply question them and not except the sentence. Another example, is when he questioned the British soldiers about why they told him he´s going to jail. They didn´t expect his defiant answers so they let
You should probably steer clear from this article if you’re into the whole dying for no apparent reason during a war thing, because that basically what Gandhi’s is portraying with his Satyagraha saying in the “Nonviolent resistance”. Where he says like;
M.K. Gandhi was an Indian who protested successfully against Britain and ultimately influenced future events around the world. Gandhi’s most successful tactic to gain Indian independence was “Satyagraha” or passive resistance because the majority of society would disagree with the opponent, they will continue to protest no matter what, and it was successfully used in the Salt March. Firstly, using this tactic, about 80 Indian citizens were publically brutalized by British authorities which greatly influenced the world against them because an eyewitness wrote and sent thousands of newspapers, talking about British police brutality, around the world. For example, in Source 3 the text says, “Webb Miller’s eyewitness account was published in over a thousand newspapers around the world.”
He respected the law and didn't want to disrespect it. He was put in jail, yet still changed lives. So the question is, what made Gandhi's nonviolence work? There once was a law that the British passed called the salt tax. It stated that Indians were not allowed to manufacture or collect their own salt.
Throughout history, there have been many unfair rules all over the world. There are people who like the rules and people who dislike the rules. Sometimes everybody dislikes the rule and wants change in them. Whenever there is a request of change of the government, the people find many solutions/methods to make the change. One of the solutions is protesting and this method is commonly used for a change. There are two types of protests, violence, and nonviolence. One example of a violent protest is the Birmingham Civil Rights Protest in 1963 and an example of a nonviolent protest is Gandhi’s nonviolent protest for independence. It is believable that nonviolent protest if the most effective way to protest for society because it leaves a great
British rule was tough on many Indians. Gandhi, an Indian born lawyer, believed in freedom and peace for his people. He once experienced racism when he was kicked out of a train in Europe. He changed people’s point of view without breaking the law, which was tough for him. Gandhi made his nonviolent movement work through the use of determination, peaceful civil disobedience, and being a powerful leader.
Mahatma Gandhi: Gandhi was born in Porbandar, India in 1869 and died in 1948. He was western educated, specifically trained in England. Although he was a nationalist, he was anti-modern because he was skeptical to industrialism. He believed in the ideal of satyagraha, the non-tolerance of evil, but also the understanding that violence is not the answer to that evil. He also believed in non-violence. He did not cooperate with anything British, specifically trading with the British, British schooling or products, and even paying taxes to the British. He served as a civil rights activist after being thrown off a train when refusing to move from his seat in first class. He became the leading member of Congress Party in the 1930’s and shortly after participated in the March to Sea for salt during the British imposed salt tax. Every single aspect of Gandhi’s life was peaceful, if the people around him decided to disobey and use violence as a means of getting what they wanted, Gandhi would take it upon himself to fast. He was eventually assassinated by a Hindus
Gandhi would never bow down to any sort of outrageous law. He would rather spend his life in prison than living where he suffers. Mohandas Gandhi talked the talk but also walked the
In Gandhi’s On Civil Disobedience speech he said, “ We made it clear to the government that we would never bow to the outrageous laws.” He fought for Indians in South Africa for seven years and helped India gain their independence from the British in 1947. If it was not for Gandhi who knows if India would have gain their independence. Although India did suffer from internal turmoil as religious factions fought for power, circumstances could have been much worse for people who lived in India if Gandhi did not stand up for what he believed in and did what he
Gandhi believed that violence is not the correct way to fight. So he used nonviolence to fight for India's independence and he ended up making India free from the British people. Political scientist Erica Chenoweth put together some data and was surprised by what she found. And
In 1757, Great Britain extended its empire into India. This occupation would not fully end until 1947. In the time between, there were many movements by the Indian people to gain independence from the British. The movement that finally succeeded in winning India’s independence was led by one of the most influential figures of the 20th century, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Gandhi’s methods for fighting against the occupation of the British were very different from those of any of the freedom movements before. And that was why it worked. Gandhi did not agree with the general reasoning of the time: that conflicts could be solved through negotiation and forceful resistance.1 Rather, his faith led him to go
Civil disobedience is a concept that is valued throughout the world. If the government abuses its laws and symbolizes injustice, one can disobey those laws. Such prominent leaders that signified the importance of civil resistance through words, speeches, and walks were Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr., and Mohandas K. Gandhi. They were significant in their lifetime; they spread peaceful and meaningful resistances to prove that the government was not always right. Civil disobedience is a citizen’s moral responsibility because it demonstrates a person's capability in governing their own life no matter what the consequences are and it shows that authority only has power if the people let it control them and regulate them with unjust laws,
“ I well remembered that I … did not feel the slightest hesitation in entering the prisoner’s box” (Document C). Gandhi shows that he didn’t care that his punishment was time in jail because he was still going to go back out working toward his goal. It is said that he passed his term in jail in perfect happiness and peace (Document C). Even though Gandhi knew that his actions went against the law and that it would result in punishment, he still did what would help the poor Indians. Gandhi showed resistance throughout the whole movement, even though he did suffer sometimes. Since punishment was a big part in his life, the British eventually got their punishment, which was losing control of
When oppression, repression, and suppression is all there is in a society, citizens have the right and must revolt against such tyranny, and they do, but often they counteract violence with more violence. Often, they retaliate with the same principle of injustice that creates enmity and separation from truth, harmony and justice. And much more often, they ignore the evil and corruption that now conquers their hearts, making them the new tyrants. Yet, Mahatma Gandhi, a humble man whose weapon was more powerful than all the guns and man’s power combined, showed us that non-violence is the most effective weapon to combat violence and transform enmity into friendship and hate into love, and ultimately find a truthful justice within a society.
How might Mohandas K. Gandhi advise someone to respond to an unjust law? “There are two ways of countering injustice. One way is to smash the head of the man who perpetrates injustice and to get your own head smashed in the process.” It is important for people to take a stand on issues of justice in society. It teaches society to work and resolve their issues, it encourages social advancement, and it helps the people who are directly affected by the situation, and can give them assistance.
The movie Gandhi starts in 1893, where Gandhi was riding in a first class train carriage but was told to transfer into the third-class carriage, even though he was holding a first class ticket. Gandhi refused to move to a different carriage, so a policeman arrived and literally threw him out of the train. This was the defining moment of Gandhi that changed his life forever: he would dedicate his life to fight for equality and independence for his people the Indians, nonviolently.
