This is the hard choice Bilbo Baggins had to make. How far would it take for you to go on this testing adventure until you break and quit? Beorn knew after Gandalf told the tales of what they have been through to get that far that he had to check it out himself. After scoping it out, he knew exactly what was lying ahead. The Goblins were avidly looking for the dwarves because they had killed the Goblins’ king. In result of achieving this new knowledge, Beorn could've just said, "No, I don't think I can help you fellows. It's quite too dangerous and I care too much about my animals." but because he was loyal, he kept helping them to get in better physical and mental condition. Without Beorn, the dwarves, Bilbo, and Gandalf wouldn’t have probably survived the climax or reach their final destination in the book. They were too weak and didn’t have the correct mindset. Do you think you could trek on to defeat an evil dragon when you haven’t had any drinks, sleep, or anything to eat for a long …show more content…
For example, without the Goblins being loyal to their leader who was killed, they wouldn’t have been hunting avidly to find the murderers of their beloved king. Unfortunately because they were trying to hunt down the dwarves, Bilbo, and Gandalf, they prevented them to go the easier route to get to their destination. With that in mind, the squad had to go the more challenging ways with more risks involved. That’s where they get almost eaten by spiders and ambushed by woodland-elves. They were later imprisoned but they finally escaped with Bilbo’s master plan, which almost failed. After being soaking wet from the river down to the men, Thorin and the dwarves with Bilbo finally found Lake Town. They were pampered, especially Thorin because his grandfather was Thror the Kind under the Mountain. If the Master and his men were not loyal to Thorin, they wouldn’t have assisted them in their recovery. If the Goblins had not blocked their way of getting towards their destination, their path they would’ve taken would be different. That difficult path revealed new respect for Bilbo from the
They held a great deal of admiration for their friend who proved his worthiness through his burglaring success. After the final battle, Bilbo talks to Thorin right before the he dies, “‘There is more in you than you know, child of the kindly West. Some courage and some wisdom, blended in the measure’” (Tolkien 290). The dwarf king realized his original opinion of Bilbo was wrong. Thorin found that Bilbo was brave and honorable, not weak and incapable. The rest of the dwarves developed the same opinion as Thorin, “Then the dwarves bowed low before their Gate, but words stuck in their throats. ‘Good-bye and good luck, wherever you fare!’” (Tolkien 294). Originally, the dwarves were almost unwilling to take the little hobbit along on the journey, but by the end, they were struggling to say goodbye to their friend. Bilbo became more than just a burglar to the dwarves, he became a respected
Most people believe the beat of a heart and a breath of fresh air makes people alive. The truth of the matter is the quality of life is what matters the most, which Mildred, in Fahrenheit 451 realized more and more with every sleeping pill, as she slowly began letting herself go. Although Mildred seems content with her life behind her parlor walls and seashells, she remains selfish, confused about her identity, and unloving towards her real family. A cold wife will eventually show her lack of commitment, betrayal, and the small amount of life that she lived over a long period of time.
Without Bilbo to save them Thorin & Co. would have failed their mission and died. Another such event takes place after the spider situation. The crew then realise they are missing one person and they find it to be Thorin, the leader of the group. They venture outward attempting to search for Thorin but are captured by the native wood elves.
In The Hobbit, Tolkien created cultures and values that are represented often in certain characters and groups of characters. These translate to character traits, which can be positive or negative. After reading up to this point in the story, one can infer that Tolkien considers focused to be a positive character trait, greed to be a negative character trait, and he also feels intelligence more important than physical strength.
At the beginning, Gandalf pretty much has to trick Bilbo into going on this adventure, but by the end of the book, Bilbo is much more courageous and willing to adventure out on his own, as evidenced by his willingness to confront Smaug. Due to Bilbo being a son of a Baggin ’s he was very conservative and didn’t enjoy adventure but due to Bilbo also being a son of a Took’s he was more adventurous and acknowledged life. Bilbo’s Took side convinced him to go on the quest with Gandalf. Bilbo becomes much more adventurous during the book by JRR
Getting yourself and others out of a sticky situation is a very difficult feat to accomplish, but Bilbo manages to save himself and the dwarves multiple times. If Bilbo had not acted alone for the good of the group, then Thorin and Company would not have had its success in the end. There are many examples in the book when Bilbo saves the entire group from danger. One notable instance is when Bilbo led the dwarves to Smaug’s lair and devised a plan to steal the treasure. Bilbo also managed to lead the group out of danger when Smaug was plotting vengeance on them and Lake-town. If Bilbo had stayed back and let Thorin and the dwarves decide on everything, no doubt they would have failed in the expedition or worse. Also, scattered throughout the
The world we live in is full of heroes that are different shapes and sizes that people don't remember who they are a month after they do something. The story The Hobbit may make you think of a half sized person as an no everyday hero, but his actions will touch your heart and make you think that it's really possible to change the world around you no matter what size you are. The half sized person in this story by J.R.R. Tolkien is named Bilbo and his race is known as hobbits. In his distant homeland called the Shire, he was summoned by a wizard named Gandalf who requested he join them on a quest for treasure. This quest was probably the
In The Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins takes a journey of mental toughness and perseverance as he and the dwarves adventure to the Lonely Mountain. The first thing to remember is Bilbo rarely left his hobbit hole and he sure did not go on any adventures so this journey would not only be physically challenging, but mostly mentally tough. During his long adventure, Bilbo had to survive days without food and days of utmost discomfort. Also, Bilbo had to fight the temptations to turn back and give up on the glorious treasure at the end. For example, after the eagles saved them from the goblins and wargs, Bilbo could have decided to give up after all their trouble, but mentally he fought off the temptations because he knew the end result would overpower
Greed is a common, yet detrimental factor in society today. All around the world people experience this type of attribute, whether it is for power or for the simple concept of desiring more in life. In order to further this prevalent theme, Peter Jackson created the film The Hobbit-Desolation of Smaug, in 2013. In this film, he continued the adventure of Bilbo Baggins and the dwarves and set them off to reclaim their ancient dwarven city guarded by the dragon, Smaug. Throughout the entire movie, the characters face many tough obstacles, those being orcs, elves and most importantly the evil dragon. Those elves actually came to their rescue later on in the movie, proving their loyalty. Those noble elves were Tauriel and Legolas. Also, a major character in the movie was Gandalf, which was the powerful wizard. In the movie, he aided in their adventure by leading them to the proper trail while also providing them with many struggles they may encounter on the way. While all of the characters and setting play a key role in shaping the movie as a whole, the theme of greed is a much greater aspect throughout the film. Peter Jackson implements personification, symbolism, and foreshadowing in his movie in order to point his audience towards the bigger message, greed is the root of all evil.
Bilbo uncovers things about himself that he didn't even know possibly existed within him. In the cliché theme of 'good versus evil', Bilbo, without question, automatically jumps to the 'good' side. In his character, there are no uncertain borders, as there are in the temperaments of the dwarves. From the beginning to the end he stays an honourable and honest hobbit,
In the end Good prevails over Evil and the goblins and wargs are killed and middle earth is freed of their wickedness. Bilbo returns to his peaceful home under the hill and the Lonely Mountain is returned to its original glory.
By putting his life in danger Bilbo shows a true example of heroism. Though the dwarves were still skeptical of his abilities, they were starting to take into consideration of what Gandalf had said about this little hobbit. Continuing their adventure the group is attacked by goblins where they are eventually saved by Gandalf. Throughout the turmoil of the attacking goblins Bilbo gets lost in the caves and finds himself alone in the darkness. It is in this event when Bilbo finds Gollum’s ring. Gollum was a sickly looking creature that had been dwelling in the caves for many years. Bilbo used his wits to outsmart the creature by playing a riddle game with him and eventually made it to safety. Having Bilbo win the riddle game shows that his smart and witty mind aids him in becoming the hero. Bilbo wasn’t some tough strong stereotypical super hero, he used his smarts to outwit his foes and to triumph over evil. Though Bilbo at the time did not know the power of the ring that he had retrieved from Gollum’s lair (the power of invisibility), it was his heroic fate that he found it as it assist him in becoming the hero of the story. Fate has it that Bilbo will become a hero, but Bilbo also has the courage on top of his fate to get the dwarves out of life threatening situations.
Despite Bilbo’s unwavering loyalty and selfless actions, Thorin’s greed leads him to accuse Bilbo of treachery when the hobbit attempts to negotiate a peaceful resolution with the rival factions. Thorin’s distrust and suspicion reveal the extent to which his greed has corroded his moral compass, causing him to view even his closest allies as potential threats to his hoard of
Moreover, I also consider that the book is a channel of emotional wisdom in that it verifies that when an individual has faith on his ability to accomplish a particular task even if entails sourcing help from other people, the task can actually be accomplished at the end. The novel gave an understanding that even though an individual is morally upright at an initial stage, the person is bound to change in the course of development as a result of inevitable change. This can be backed by the fact that Bilbo at the onset of the novel was only determined to share views with fellow hobbits and not either the dwarves or elves. However, at the end, there is a drastic change
He wondered whether he ought not, now he had a magic ring, to go back into the horrible, horrible tunnels and look for his friends. He had just made up his mind that it was his duty, and that he must turn back – and very miserable he felt about it – when he heard voices.” After Bilbo emerges from the Misty Mountains, he has "a very uncomfortable thought" that he should go back and check on the dwarves to make sure they get away from the goblins. This is a key event in the novel as it shows Bilbo’s growing loyalty and friendship with the dwarves. Tolkien used Bilbo’s internal thinking to send the message of loyalty and friendship to the reader. The decision to go back to the cave and risk death by the goblins for the betterment of his friends is an act of courage, strength and friendship. Certainly, it could be said that the only reason Bilbo went back to the dwarves was because he needs them and is scared and lost without them. They might argue that Bilbo is not a hero without the support of the dwarves and the help from Gandalf. While this is a good point and raises some questions about Bilbo’s personality, it fails to account for the ease of Bilbo going back to the shire. While Bilbo is interested in the prospect of gold and wants to protect the shire, is heart is not as much
