Ricky Martin once said, “Heroes represent the best of ourselves, respecting that we are human beings. A hero can be anyone from Gandhi to your classroom teacher, anyone who can show courage when faced with a problem. A hero is someone who is willing to help others in his or her best capacity” -Ricky Martin. All human beings in this world are helped by someone at some point in their lives. Those people are also known as “heroes”. In addition, a person who barely interacts with anyone except his/her family has a chance to be a hero. This condition applies to Boo Radley, an adult in To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. The story sets in the fictional town named Maycomb in southern U.S, and reflects on prejudice around 1960s. In the novel, Boo Radley is recognized as a crazy man who never goes out of his house for about fifteen years. He was also one of those who were victims of prejudice, along with the blacks. However, he tries to get closer to the Finch kids, Scout and Jem, throughout the novel. He sends gifts, and he rescues the Finch kids …show more content…
The novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee considers the way people “different” from everybody else are helpful in fact. Boo Radley is a great example of how to be a hero in tough conditions. Even if the prejudices of the white people in Maycomb makes him stay in his house the whole time, he makes effort to be friends with the Finch kids by sending gifts and rescuing from dangers. Everyone in this world should give effort to help someone to the best of their ability, regardless of the background they have. Boo Radley is a hero; a hero not just in the novel, but in the society that all human beings would live in. He might not be honored by everyone, but he will more than when he does nothing. Be one of the heroes, who respect others as a human being, symbolizes the best of theirselves and willing to help others in their best
In this book Atticus is the good that lives alongside the evil of Bob Ewell. Atticus Finch is an honorable man who thinks of everyone as equals and does his best to do what is right at all times. He simply explains to his daughter Scout that he is doing the best he can with the Tom Robinson case, “I certainly am. I do my best to love everybody...I’m hard put, sometimes-baby, it’s never an insult to be called what somebody thinks is a bad name,” (Lee 144). Atticus chooses to believe that there is good in everyone. This includes Arthur Radley, who saves his children from evil, “‘Mr.Arthur, honey,’ said Atticus, gently correcting me. ‘Jean Louise, this is Mr.Arthur Radley. I believe he already knows you,’” (Lee 363). Boo saves Jem and Scout from Bob Ewell’s attack. Most people in Maycomb would not think that Boo was capable of such good, but in this case, he is seen doing good just like Atticus. Boo and Atticus would be considered the protagonists in this situation because they do good throughout the book. There are just as many examples of good as there are bad in To kill a Mockingbird if it is looked at in the right way. In the real world, people do random acts of kindness every day, including a school that aims to perform 10 thousand acts of kindness. Another example of good would be the charities that people donate to every day including Super Bowl winner Chris Long who donated his 2017 salary to
Whether in the form of a living person or a fictional character from a book or movie, heroes are prevalent in everyone's life. The typical view of a hero is someone who fights crime or saves people from mortal peril, but the true definition of a hero is a person of distinguished courage admired for their brave deeds and noble qualities. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch is the true definition of hero. Although he wasn't seen as a hero during the time the book took place, Atticus Finch is considered to be one of the most heroic figures in American Literature because of his courage, intelligence, and sense of what is right and what is wrong.
A hero is someone who stands up for what they think is right, serves and protects people, and shows respect for everyone. The novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a story about Maycomb, Alabama, a small town where most people are prejudiced and racist. An innocent black man is accused of raping a white woman, and only a couple of people believe he did not do it. He is sentenced to death, but a few more people are awakened to how wrong prejudice is. Atticus Finch, Tom Robinson, and Boo Radley are just a few heroes in To Kill a Mockingbird, and they are heroes because they respect and care for others and stand up for what they think is right.
The word hero does not have a universal definition. Some may say that a hero is a person who fights against monsters or criminals to save the day, or people who have superhuman qualities. Some may claim that a hero is more about what the person has inside of them and can be a seemingly average person in society. In general, heroes can live among us everyday. In Harper Lee’s stellar novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch is portrayed as a kind man with a good head on his shoulders. Atticus Finch has broken out of the narrow literary definition of hero and has created his own category: a common man with exceptional, noble qualities. Atticus Finch should be considered a hero because Atticus was kind to the people of Maycomb, led his kids
Being a hero is something most citizens dream of becoming, but most are not ready for the responsibility. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch the father of the narrator shows true signs of being a hero. Atticus demonstrates three major points of potent qualities of being a hero. The first of these points being courage. By standing up to Bob Ewell, the main opponent of the novel Atticus shows the his courage to face great opponents. “It was Miss Stephanie’s pleasure to tell us: this morning Mr. Bob Ewell stopped Atticus on the post office corner, spat in his face, and told him he’d get him if it took the rest of his life. “I wish Bob Ewell wouldn’t chew tobacco,” was all Atticus ever talked about it,” (Lee, 247-248). Atticus clearly
People are not who they seem to be in To Kill A Mockingbird. Are one example being Atticus himself. He has a different point view on himself that his kids don’t seem to really see about him. For example the town calls him the “one shot flinch”. Another on is he intelligent and an amazing at what he does and if you didnt know what he does he’s a lawyer. He also stay’s calm and collected in sistuations that somebody else wouldn’t handle very well. Next we have Boo Radley. He’s known as a dirty , gross boy. Also rumors has it that he’s a trouble maker or thats what everyone hears. But as we read on in the book we got to know him a little bit more. He has good intentions. Also he helps people and an example of him helping is that he folded jems
Nelson Mandela once said “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it.” and in the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, one of the main characters named Boo Radley shows real courage. Of course that is not his real name, that is just the name that people make up for him. He lives in his house with his brother, and people make rumors about him because he never comes outside. These rumors all started because when he was a child he stabbed his dad in the leg with a pair of scissors while cutting up the newspaper, now people make rumors about him eating cats, and watching people in the night. He never comes outside because he is scared of what other people will think. If I were him I would feel the same exact
As Atticus Finch demonstrated, a hero is any person with the courage, bravery, and nobility to risk everything for a cause greater than themselves. Early in the story, Scout, Atticus’ daughter, was exposed to one her peers ridiculing Atticus for “defending n*ggers.” Later, when Scout questioned Atticus about this, he said that he was “simply defending a Negro—his name’s Tom Robinson” and that he was defending him “for a number of reasons… the main one is, if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town” (Lee, 100). The nobility of Atticus Finch is highlighted in this statement.
In the book, ¨To Kill A Mockingbird¨ by Harper Lee, one of the main characters Atticus can be described as a mentor and friend to his two children, Jem and Scout. Throughout the book he has lacked the sense of physical punishment and has rather used a more thoughtful and strategic plan that will change the mindset of his children for the better. When his daughter Scout swears he brushes it off, unlike most parents. In his mind if he were to reprimand her her would just be giving her what she wants, attention. ¨´ Aw that´s a damn story´, I said. ´ I beg your pardon?´ Atticus said, ´Don't pay attention to her, Jack. She´s trying you out. Cal said she's been cussing fluently for a week now.” (104) As shown by Atticus’s actions, his teaching methods
In the text I am reading, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Jean Louise ‘Scout’ Finch, the protagonist, always plays with her brother and his friend, does not know how to control her anger and being upset, and, unlike a lady, is aggressive in both the way she speaks and acts. For example, “This time, I (Scout) split my knuckle to the bone on his front teeth.” (Page 84). During that time, girls were expected to behave well and wear nicely, but Scout, being a tomboy, acts aggressively as shown in the quote. Other scenes in the book, including the time when Walter Cunningham drowned his food in syrup and Scout acted mightier than him just because he was poor and did not know a lot of things, show that she does not exactly behave the way a typical girl in the 1930’s was expected to behave.
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee demonstrates that it is wrong to convict the innocent which is supported by the characters Atticus Finch, Boo Radley and Tom Robinson. For example, Atticus Finch always saw people equally; he was a courageous man who allowed everyone a chance to show their worth. Atticus says to Jem when Mrs. Dubose dies that “[he] wanted [Jem] to see what real courage is…. It is when you're licked but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what” (Lee 149). This proves that Atticus does not force hate upon a human; he stands up for a strong man even when no one else supports him. In addition, many people see Boo Radley as a
In every story, there emerges a hero who generates action and change. They arise as the predominant character who becomes fixed into the spotlight. Nevertheless, there are other characters not as recognized, who work behind the scenes to compel the story to shine. Those who face hardships and fight through them just as much as the leading character, yet appear insignificant or lesser than the hero. Accordingly, in Harper Lee’s famous novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, it is unlikely for the majority to consider characters in the same manner as Calpurnia, Tom Robinson, and Boo Radley as heroes of the story. Even though they were faced with countless challenges due to the superficial factors that hid their voices. They, among innumerable others, deserve
Everyone has a person that they look up to and see as a hero in their life.In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, many people that affect society and the people in different ways can be portrayed as heroes. Some of these heroes affect people by being a warrior and some affect people through tragedy. Atticus Finch, the father of the main character, can be seen as a warrior hero and Tom Robinson, a black man accused of rape, can be seen as a tragic hero are two of the “Heroes” in the story. They are both faced with extremely difficult odds and they both pull through and are seen as changers of the way people think and how they act at home and in public.
Everywhere you go people are always judging you on how you act, your action shows who you really are as a person. In “To Kill a Mockingbird” Boo Radley is judged for never coming out of his house and is considered the freak of the town. One night he changes the way two children looks at him by coming out of his house, which he never does, to save them. If it had not been for Boo heroic actions they wouldn’t be alive.
Boo Radley is the true hero of To Kill a Mockingbird because he cares about the children even though they’re not his own. He put the blanket over Scout during Miss Maudie’s house fire, he faced his fear of leaving his house to give the kids gifts in the tree, and he also killed Bob Ewell. The night after Boo Radley saved the kids, Atticus reads Scout the book The Gray Ghost. As Scout drifts off to sleep, she said to her father “‘Atticus, he was real nice’” and Atticus replied, “‘Most people are, Scout, when you finally see them’” (Lee 323). When Scout says this, she is referring to the character Stoner’s Boy in her book. However, Atticus’s response probably has Boo in mind, as Boo saved his kids. He wants Scout to finally see Boo Radley as a good person. One of the most well-known lines in the book Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is
