“The Shawshank redemption” is a film in which Andy Dufresne is wrongfully given two life sentences for the murder of his wife and her lover and is sent to the Shawshank prison where Andy is subjected to a variety of different beatings by the guards and other inmates, even being raped by other inmates. After getting involved with doing the guards taxes the crooked warden forces him to hide his many untaxed revenues. After Andy escapes he leaves the jail in scandal by giving evidence to the press surrounding the warden’s dodgy dealings. This paper will be analysing how the director, Frank Darabont uses stylistic features to present the idea of hope in the film. Before the library is even built when Andy finally gets the books and funding makes the thought of hope more prominent in the prison, it shows if you keep belief in your hopes that you can accomplish them. Moreover the breaking down of walls is a physical representation of hope and Andy’s impact on the prison, breaking down the walls gives the men the feeling of hope because they finally have something good to look forward to in the near future and just seeing change in a prison would be monumental to the inmates as the have been used to the same walls for, in some cases most of their lives. The breaking down of the walls could also be an allusion to Andy’s plan giving Andy an increased sense of hope that his plan would work and he would make it to the outside world. Not only does the library itself represent hope and happiness within the prison but it also represents a better future outside the prison for the prisoners, this aspect is shown at the point in the film where Andy is teaching Tommy so he can get through high school exams and turn away from his life of crime on the
