Belief Generates hope
Belief, sacrifice and inspiration have the potential to fabricate hope.
Believing in a cause can fabricate hope. The Younger family starts losing hope and feel that they may be stuck in their cramped apartment forever. In spite of that, Mama has confidence in herself and her family that they retain the ability to lead a finer life. “She went out and bought you a house!” (II, 91). Using the money that Mama received from her husband’s life insurance, she knew that this money could pull her family out of their miniscule apartment and when she told the rest of the Youngers, they all became extremely energetic and joyful. Another case is in “The Crucible”, Abigail didn’t give up and she pushed through so she started naming random people to try and convince the people in the house that she was not involved in a conspiracy. “I saw Sarah Good with the Devil! I saw Goody

For instance, in the book “Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry, Walter renounced his dreams of owning a business and becoming a wealthy man in order for his family to go live in a brand new house that they so desperately needed by standing up to Mr. Linder. “And we have decided to move into our house because my father-my father-he earned it for us brick by brick” (Hansberry, III, 148). Walter relinquished his ambitions and his entire family began screeching and jumping all over their home due to the fact that they had secured their future in an adequate place to live. Another example is when Walter Lee deliberately gave Travis a dollar so that he could be happy. “In fact, here’s another fifty cents...Buy yourself some fruit today-or take a taxicab to school or something!” (Hanberry, I, 31). Walter knew that his family desperately needs the money, despite that he wanted to offer his son more opportunities so he can lead a superior childhood than his own. All in all sacrificing is one of the greatest actions you can do for
Courage is shown by many characters all throughout The Crucible, however; John Proctor and Abigail Williams are the most courageous of them all. Both John and Abigail show courage because they aren’t afraid to do anything. These are the two characters who stood to be the most courageous. After reading Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, courageousness is shown through different institutions(such as courts, religion and the church of God), yet; it is genuinely shown through the characters of the play.
In Age of Innocence, Archer sacrifices potentially starting a new life with Ellen in order to protect his wife. Archer, when “he thought of Ellen, [she’d] become the complete vision of all that he had missed. [He realized, He was] dead.”Archer sacrificed himself and his potential future with Ellen in order to stay with his newly formed family. In Ethan Frome, Ethan sacrifices economic stability in order to take care of his wife Zeena.“He had always wanted to be an engineer, and to live in towns, where there were lectures[…]with a smart wife like Zeena.[But Ethan soon realized] her skill as a nurse had been acquired by the absorbed observation of her own symptoms.” Ethan gave up his opportunity to succeed in order to help his wife who was in great need. He sacrificed his future for Zeena. Sacrificing one’s future for the needs of someone less fortunate is only a fraction of the human
The second flawed characteristic of humanity seen in “The Crucible” is survival. Miller portrays this in his play by using dramatization. Throughout the play, many people were driven by the need to survive, jeopardizing other people’s reputation and safety to ensure their own survival. This would make several scenes in the play very dramatic. There is no character that better exemplifies this then Abigail, possibly the most dramatic character in “The Crucible.” She exhibits this behavior early on in the story. When Paris confronts her about her and the other girls dancing in the woods, she immediately turns and blames Tituba, calling her a witch and a devil worshipper (12). She even accuses Tituba of conjuring spirits to ensure that she would
In this essay I will talk about two main central ideas. First, some people accuse innocent people for witchery. Secondly, there is a lot of hatred in the town of Salem.
Since life itself has been around, all organisms have faced moments that test their bravery, strength, and integrity. However, Today’s issues are vastly different from those of the past. From the late 1600’s to now, our values and morals have greatly shifted. Before the separation of church and state, New England was greatly divided by an event commonly known as the salem witch trials. In Arthur Miller’s, The Crucible, the thematic concepts of courage, weakness, and truth are you used to evoke empathy in its readers.
You did it, you must have! Arthur Miller's "The Crucible" in his writing it significantly illustrates human cruelty in the name of righteousness. Inspired by the McCarthy hearings of the 1950s, Miller's play, The Crucible, focuses on the inconsistencies of the Salem witch trials and the extreme behavior that can result from dark desires and hidden agendas. Miller bases the play on the historical account of the Salem witch trials; a series of hearings before local magistrates followed by trials to prosecute people accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts, between February 1692 and May 1693. A modern day example that can be recognizably compared to the Salem Witch Trials is racial profiling that manifested in the 1700s. Racial profiling is the use of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, or national origin by law enforcement agents as a factor in deciding whom to investigate, arrest or detain absent evidence of a specific crime or criminal behavior. Throughout the play, there are numerous instances of human cruelty in the name of righteousness that outline the basis of the Salem witch trials and Racial profiling in today's society. In both of the stories, The Crucible and Racial Profiling individuals use their authority to commit hanice interrogation techniques to get what they want from innocent citizens.
In “The Crucible”, there are words that have different meanings based on their context such as hysteria, evil and hope, which applies to the content of the play. Hysteria destroys the people of Salem, evil is within the Devil, and hope is when the characters confess.
Fear, an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat ( Dictionary.com). The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, takes place in the small Puritan town of Salem, Massachusetts. Much of the land occupied was still unknown to the townspeople. Having limited amount of knowledge of their surroundings, people began to believe that the Devil is roaming around them. Many things, such as witches and spirits, became unknown to them which led to the townspeople fearing it. Rather than learning about the unknown, the people of Salem let it restrict them from making the unknown known. Miller wrote this play as an allegory of a similar incident that happened during the 1950s, the McCarthyism trial. Both events are focused on the fear of the unknown of the people as well as the society. Miller uses the motif of fear to demonstrate how the fear of the unknown causes personal gain amongst
Courage is not the absence of fear, but the judgement that something else is more important than fear. In Miller’s, The Crucible, several of the character’s must decide whether they should confess to dealing with the evil and ‘away’ their good name or be hanged for something they did not actually commit. “This play is essentially about courage, weakness, and lies.” There are many lies and weaknesses in this play, but there are also a lot of parts where there was a lot of courage present. Mary Warren accused John Proctor of working for the devil.
In the book the crucible, it is about courage, weakness and truth. THroughout the book there are times where a character may either need to stand up and fight back or break under pressure. Some examples of what i am claiming are when abigail and tituba break under the pressure and say they were with the devil. Truth is also a big part in the book because all around were lies and more lies. A main example is when john proctor stands up to the little girl's claiming these things. When he shows courage against the children they know that what will happes is not going to come out in their favor. They create more and more false rumors but that is because they are too weak to tell the truth and face their punishments. I mainly believe that the
Fear and faith can drive a person to death or a divine life. The Crucible takes place in Salem during the Salem witch trials. The Crucible makes a point to include that the population’s main religion is puritan. The puritan religion has many distinct rules. People that are puritan have extremely strong faith and guidelines. Fear is another extremely strong force. The Crucible makes a point to include that the people accused of witchcraft are very fearful of death and this element drives the entire play. People get ear in their heads and start to lose their faith. The people want to live so when they are accused of dancing with the devil, they disobey their faith and lie and confess until they are set free. The smart people keep their word so
In 1692, in Salem Massachusetts a small group of girls joined together to go in the woods at night to meet a slave woman name Tituba. Tituba is a slave of Reverend Parris. During their meeting all the girls are dancing
“You know that Cain were an upright man, and yet he did killed Abel.”(Arthur Miller pg. 91)This means that throughout history that people can be motivated to do both amazing and horrible actions. In the same way ambition can be used to corrupt the most steady and kind. For example the quote “ You know that Cain was a good man, yet he killed Abel.” Cain was corrupted by his ambition to be perfect in God’s eyes, but Cain instead of letting go of his jealousy, anger, and pursuing a new ambition instead of killing Abel. There are perfect examples of great people’s integrity proving how values can be broken by ambition. This is comparable to the Crucible made by Miller; Hale, Danforth, and Parris are three people have been corrupted by their ambition.
For instances, in the book, A Thousand Splendid Suns, Mariam gives up her life and surrenders to the Taliban, so Laila and her children can live a better life, one without fear of the Taliban hunting them down for the death of Rasheed. Insert quote. Mariam could have run away with Lalia, but she knew that they would always have to look over their shoulder, to worry if today is the day that the Taliban come. She wanted Laila and her children to live a long happy life, especially after all the hardship they have already suffered. Mariam only had Laila and her children’s happiness in mind when she made her decision. She made the most noble gesture anyone can do; she gave up her life for others. Sacrifices don’t always need to be made with someone’s life though. Another example is ‘sacrificing’ or donating money. Thousands upon thousands of people donate money to charities, whose only goal is to change the lives of others for the better. When most people donate money, their purpose isn’t to make themselves feel better or to bring them more happiness, their true purpose is to give to those who need it, to help establish a better life for others. Sometimes we get so caught up in the grandeur of things, that we don’t always remember that sometimes the little acts can also make a big
In today’s culture, it is thought of as common to sacrifice things for the people they care about. It is also not uncommon to sacrifice things for other reasons, such as: a sacrifice for themselves, to make someone happy, or even to simply make the choice to give a gift. An example of such would be a mother sacrificing for her kids during the holidays. At Christmas time, it is only normal for children to want all sorts of toys and presents. Living in a household with little to no money, a single mother would have to sacrifice even the tiniest of things.
