After watching the movie “Goodnight and Goodluck” directed by George Clooney I think the most important aspect for present day communicators to carry into their work is integrity. I think integrity is important because it is a value that shows your character and personality. During the movie Murrow developed his character by consistently being honest with others and himself. Edward Murrow shows integrity quite often. For example, when McCathy starts making false accusations, Murrow stands up in front of the camera and defends himself by stating facts to prove his innocence. McCarthy claimed that Murrow had ties to communism saying that he was on the soviet pay role in 1932 and that he is a card carrying member for the international industrial
Integrity is a crucial trait when playing team sport, especially in football where you can only win if your team has your back. A character who shows a superior example of integrity in the inspirational movie “Remember the Titans” is Gerry Bertier. This character stands out to me as a character with integrity because even though he was white, he still stood up for his black teammates despite how people tried to make him feel like an outcast. Gerry’s also shows an exemplary example of a integrity when he put aside his paralyzed body and encouraged his team without being jealous. Gerry Bertier sets an excellent example of what a integrity should look like even when people tried to push him away from what he believed in and when his body was
Senator Joseph McCarthy is notorious for his speech where he claimed to have a list of two hundred five communists. He became partially responsible for the communist witch hunts, which cost many people their jobs and their reputations. In his speech “Enemies From Within,” he uses metaphors and appeals to ethos and pathos in order to convince his audience that communism is a major threat to the US, and many powerful people are communist. The United States and USSR were allies during World War II, and only after the war did tensions arise. McCarthy uses metaphors to explain why communism was not treated as such a threat until after the war. He states that the apathy towards communism was due to an “emotional hangover” caused by the war, and “this
During the time of the “Red Scare” McCarthy stated that he “loved to manipulate people,” (Oakley 207). He was able to “swagger” in the meeting and he knew that he could stir up “turmoil and confusion” at a moment’s notice. Once
During the days of early television broadcast Edward R. Murrow, the main reporter in Goodnight and Goodluck, opposes Senator Joseph McCarthy during his crusade to eliminate communists that supposedly infiltrated the government. During these times
“Good communication” means appreciating differences in point of view, and gain knowledge from each difference, to later use it to make decisions that would be fairer. Good communication also In the excerpt from Empire of Illusion by Chris Hedges, he argues that “the most essential skill” in political leaders is artifice. This means that a political leader’s connection with their citizens is fake and created purely with propaganda. The issue at hand is that too many political leaders are using artifice and are deceiving all of their citizens and are then able to lead as they want and not as their citizens wish. The most essential skill for a political leader should be a balance of skills and not just one skill; Integrity, being honorable, being a good communicator should all be skills (and more) a politician should have to be a great
Edward Murrow broke the realism about McCarthy on the evening of March 9, 1954, by sharing video footage that shown that the Senator was up to no good, and was abusing his political power to do so. Murrow and co-editor Fred Friendly gave controversial information on the man and his shenanigans. In turn, the realization of what Senator McCarthy was truly about, and the evidence that Murrow presented in a live broadcast, eventually
The only variable evidence that McCarthy possesses for this claim is the knowledge that Murrow has been a member of the leftist union Industrial Workers of the World, which Murrow denies. (Clooney) This meager piece of evidence lacks enough substance to make a bold claim labeling a pioneering journalist such as Murrow into Communism territory. Though he may have been a member of this union, accusing Murrow of being a Communist solely due to his membership is very narrow-minded. The fact of the matter is that McCarthy continuously fails to attest genuine testimony as to why he makes accusations again and again.
Joseph McCarthy, the notorious US senator who causes the McCarthyism era in the 1940s to the 1960s to arise, deceives the American people to lose trust with each other because of suspicion of Communism. McCarthy does not have a really great reputation before following the route of corruption. He simply over exaggerates the growing tension of Communism credits from President Harry Truman’s speech. His reign continues to grow until, “In early 1954 he opened hearings investigating the promotion of an Army dentist, Irving Peress, who was suspected of being a Communist. The Army-McCarthy hearings were televised and made for grand theater as McCarthy sparred with the Army's counsel Joseph Welch” (Capps). Joseph McCarthy is an arrogant and an overconfident man who thinks he can win every court cases until the very end. He believes that whatever
Effective communication is important when developing positive relationships with anyone, as it builds trust and establishes rapport between the people who are communicating with one another.
When Cronon mentioned his friend’s father told him whenever he would have a conversation to “figure out what’s so neat about what the other person does” (3). I thought this was a great point for him to mention for this quality and it was something I always did before reading it. When I graduated high school, I did not know what I wanted to study in college. I decided to stay home and go to community college until I figured it out. Knowing one of my best skills was communication; I did research into careers that required that skill. I came across public relations and knew from the beginning this is the path I wanted to go down. One major skill public relations requires communicating. My education at Belmont and the Public relations department helped me advance in this skill and I grew as a student. I work for a country artist now doing his public relations and this job requires me to do hands on work. While school is very important, this kind of job requires a lot of practice outside the classroom as well. This quality ties into second strongest quality, which is quality 10, “The follow E.M. Forster’s injunction from Howards End: “Only connect . . .” (Cronon 5). I use my first skill to allow me to make connections. Growing up I always heard my parents say to make connections. I never understood what they really meant until my education thus far at Belmont taught me. All my professors strongly believe in making connections and when I made my first
The Movie “good night good luck” is incredibly historically accurate. The Movie uses authentic clips that show McCarthy and many speeches Murrow used. World War ended in 1945 leaving a broken Europe and a communist block behind. The United States quickly receded back to the red scare that had existed before WWII. The United States quickly set an anti-communist stance and prepared for a war against the communists. While the war never came some enterprising individuals placed themselves in powerful positions using the paranoia created. Among these individuals one came forward and began one of the most controversial historical programs. Joe McCarthy a nobody Wisconsin’s junior senator made his name when he gave a speech claiming his
Integrity is defined as doing the right thing even when no one is watching and holding others to the same standard. Hal and Lois would do anything to get a babysitter for young Dewey. However, babysitters refuse to sit the boys whenever their parents go away due to their misbehavior. They were found welcome to one of the babysitting agencies because they lifted their ban on the family
We are presented with choices every day. Many are easy to make and cause very little stress, but some choices can be extremely difficult and have significant consequences. The difference between making the right choice or the wrong one is often determined be a persons character, which is based upon the qualities of integrity, responsibility, and honesty. Gaining an understanding of these three character traits and how to build them is critical to creating a lifetime of positive outcomes.
Integrity is an essential character quality that defines an effective leader. Integrity is a unifying element; it means more than telling the truth. Integrity is concerned with right and wrong, and adherence to a set of values (Satterlee, 2013, p. 7). In that, integrity speaks on the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles – moral uprightness. A resilient leader should hold steady to their morals when faced with an ethical dilemma. “Leader integrity matters because it plays a significant role in the decision process used by followers when determining who they will follow, who they will trust, to whom they will be loyal and committed, and ultimately for whom they will perform” (Moorman & Grover, 2009, p.107). A leader’s integrity goes beyond their personal character make-up, subordinates will feel a sense of connection to a leader who acts with
Strong leadership is critical to an organizations success. Leaders need to be honest, trustworthy, respected, and good communicators (Montana & Mitchell, 2005, p. 83). Effective communication is necessary to eliminate confusion. Think how the receiver will interpret the message that you are saying or writing. Effective communication can only occur when the receiver of the message understands what the sender is intending to say.
