Chapter 02: Interesting Facts about “To Kill a Mockingbird” To Kill a Mockingbird is largely based on the personal life events of Nelle Harper Lee. The father of Scout, a protagonist, and narrator of the novel is a lawyer and the Lee’s father was also a lawyer. The book setting, characters, and all events are shaped by the events occurred during the childhood of Lee. In 1931, the Lee was only five and the nine black young men were accused of raping white women near Scottsboro, Alabama. After a lengthy trial, the case was highly publicized and five out of nine men were sentenced to long prison. Some prominent lawyers and American citizens took the sentences as forged and aggravated only by ethnic chauvinism. It was suspected that the women are lying and this accusation is false. The book got huge success and successfully won a Pulitzer Prize in 1961 and its fifteen million copies were sold. After two years of its publication, it won an academy award for the film version of this novel. The movie star Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch and it was a successful movie. On 1993, the Lee writes a brief foreword of her book and she was asked about the future editions of “To Kill a Mockingbird”. She said that the book has managed to survive without preamble and it remains a staple for high school and colleges. It has millions of worldwide readers who like the innocence of childhood, moral condemnation of racial prejudice and the goodness of human to withstand the battering of evil.
