Life is a journey, but what is a journey? How does one define a journey? Is it the emotion-filled, action-packed sequence events from your birth to your death? Or is it smaller than that? Can you experience more than one journey in your life? Well, the dictionary defines a journey as: the literal movement from one place to another, so in other words, yes you can experience more than one journey in your life, just as Odysseus in Homer’s The Odyssey, and as Amir in Hosseini's novel, The Kite Runner, experienced. Odysseus’ journey was his experience trying to get home from the island Ogygia, while he was held captive by a monster by the name of Calypso. Hadn't he said those words to me?” (Hosseini 225). Betrayal is something that hurts everyone, and here it caused his journey to feel like it had meant nothing. This helped the book because not only did it create drama, but it subtly foreshadows the huge plot twist that is later seen in the novel when Amir actually finds out that Hassan was, in fact, his brother. Not only is Amir’s physical journey important, but during the entire journey, Amir is facing two battles: the physical battle, and the emotional one of him battling with his guilt regarding Hassan. It causes the readers to become more interested in the novel at this point. On the a similar note, an important theme that arose from Odysseus’ journey was the metaphorical battle between appearance and reality. Many characters in the novel end up in “disguises” because they are trying to pretend to be who they are not. For example, at one point in the novel, Athena disguises as a sailor to help Odysseus’ and his son on both of their journeys. This theme relates to the novel as a whole because it ends up revealing itself as Athena and Odysseus core relationship. She also helps Odysseus disguise himself in order to complete his journey.These disguises end up changing the character's appearance IN reality. It ends up
