Experiencing a traumatic death has the ability to alter a person’s mentality. This is shown throughout William Shakespeare's Macbeth. More specifically, the most defining moments of change is fluent throughout Act 5.5.22-31. Macbeth turns all his emotions negative once he finds out about his wife’s death and he acts as if the tragic event that had happened is normal. Earlier in Act 5, before these lines, Macbeth is becoming more and more confident that he can defeat Malcolm due to the three apparitions, while on the other hand Malcolm is planning attacks on Macbeth, and then Lady Macbeth begins to go completely insane due to the murder of Duncan and commits the act of suicide.

From the scene where Lady Macbeth convinces Macbeth to help her kill Duncan the closeness and intimacy in their marriage is obvious. Lady Macbeth uses their relationship to convince Macbeth to commit the deed with her. Once Macbeth learns that his beloved wife is dead he acts as if it is normal and that he is barely affected by stating, “She should have died hereafter. / There would have been a time for such a word” (5.5.20-21). Macbeth is basically saying that his wife would die someday, so why not now? His lines are very fluent and not choppy, alluding to the idea that he is speaking clear headed and not choked up as if the death did not influence his voice. Macbeth continues ranting, “And all our yesterdays have lighted fools / The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle! / Life’s but a walking shadow.“ (5.5.25-27). Macbeth starts this line by calling his deceased wife a fool, making one think that maybe their love is not as strong as the audience believes.
