Every human is made up of different qualities and characteristics which make us unique, but there are certain connections that bring us together especially when we try to achieve our destiny or dream. Selfishness and obsession are two important descriptions of what connects us as humans. Everyone is selfish in some way, whether it is dramatic or subtle. Being selfish will eventually lead to obsession which is harmful to ourselves and others we associate with. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, there are numerous examples of how being conceded leads to obsession. Jay Gatsby constantly reminding himself that his dream will succeed although, we, as the readers are aware of the obstacles he will face. Gatsby’s dream is to reunite with
Black Hawk was Sauk American Indian leader that became prominent at a young age and managed to play an important role in shaping Native American history and U.S. history in general. He was born in 1767 in Saukenuk, a Native American village is contemporary Rock Island, Illinois. Even with the fact that he was not born a chief, his actions made it possible for individuals in his tribe to appreciate him and to support him as their leader. Black Hawk trained as a boy and learnt a great deal about waging warfare, as war was a dominant concept in his tribe's culture and children were well-acquainted with it in order for them to be able to react positively to diverse issues that arose.
In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald he shows Gatsby’s obsessive feelings for Daisy by all the unremarkable actions he displays, and his incapability to love someone else. It all started in autumn of 1917 in Louisville, Kentucky. Gatsby was a lieutenant in the war and Daisy was just 18 years old. Even then Gatsby bestowed the same infatuation for Daisy that he does now, five years later. Over the course of those five years Gatsby did everything he could to become wealthy so that maybe he could find his way to Daisy again. What he is unaware of is that Daisy hardly remembers her time with him, and shows little thought towards him. His obsession for Daisy never changed, but his lifestyle certainly did.
‘Obsessive love has the capacity to drive a person to insanity, leading to irrational behaviour, alienation and despair’
What will the obsessions in your life lead you to make careless decisions? Throughout the book many characters develop obsessions that affect their life. These obsessions are inadequate because they give the characters a false sense of what happiness is and makes them very relentless when trying to acquire these obsessions. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald has many characters obsessed with money, partying, drinking, and cars.
“So we find ourselves pretending one more day.” Trying to hold on to what is in the past, what will probably never happen again, or is very unlikely to. With love comes attachment, but attachment is different than obsession, which is far from love. An excerpt from “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald and “Boats against the Current” a poem by Eric Carmen show, explicitly, that love and obsession are very different. Being stuck in the past, which is shown throughout these two sources, is a very internal battle, mentally, and can cause emotional distress on the individual. These two sources demonstrate the theme and idea of the inability to move on after a lost love, which is a man versus self conflict.
For centuries, ambition has been used as a motif in literature. In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jay Gatsby fought for his entire life to win Daisy over and earn his respected place in 1920s society. Likewise, in the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare, Macbeth had every successor to the Scottish throne around him killed, including his once best friend Banquo, so that he would become king. Ambition, while seemingly a fine attribute to have, can lead to misuse of one's potential, and this is shown in both works through the motif of ambition.
Love is a powerful emotion that every human being has experience at least once in their life. There are numerous connotations that refer to this emotion, but there is only one kind of love that can make a person change completely in unexpected ways. It is the kind of love that consumes the soul and everything within. Mixed with excitement, adventure, heartbreak, happiness and joy; it is a big ball of feelings, all concentrated in one simple, yet extremely complicated necessity to have, protect, please and give all of oneself to that one person. In certain occasions, love can grow very intense and, consequently,

The disillusionment of the American Dream is a frequent but important written theme in the American literature. Fitzgerald’s famous book The Great Gatsby is one of the most important representative works that reflects this theme. F. Scott Fitzgerald is best known for his novels and short stories which chronicle the excesses of America's Jazz Age during the 1920s. His classic twentieth-century story of Jay Gatsby examines and critiques Gatsby's particular vision of the 1920's American Dream. The Great Gatsby can be seen as a far-reaching book that has revealed many serious and hidden social problems at that time. As one of the most popular and financially successful
The Chinese film Xiu Xiu: The Sent-Down Girl was produced by Joan Chen and Alice Chen and directed by Joan Chen, with the screenplay also by her and Yan Geling. This movie is based on the story "Tian Yu" by Yan Geling about a similar topic. In this film, the point of view of a previously innocent teenage girl during the Sent-Down Movement in China is explored. However, over the course of the film, that girl’s, Xiu Xiu’s, innocence is taken away. Xiu Xiu’s loss of innocence was a result of multiple factors: her assailants who used her for their own personal pleasure, the passivity of other characters, Xiu Xiu’s own loss of hope, gender roles ingrained in the cultural norms in China, and the Chinese government’s manipulation of youths during the Sent-Down Movement.
F. Scott Fitzgerald’s famed novel The Great Gatsby incorporates many dynamic characters and situations into the world of the Roaring Twenties. Given the title, many readers will argue over whether the main character, Jay Gatsby, a mysterious man who throws elaborate parties, was truly great or not. The true definition of great is one who is selfless, pure of any illegal actions, and who doesn’t lie. Gatsby rebelled against all of these characteristics. Gatsby was selfish, committed illegal actions and lied about his overall past. Using these three reasons, one can prove that Jay Gatsby was not as great as some believed him to be.
There is a fine line between love and lust. If love is only a will to possess, it is not love. To love someone is to hold them dear to one's heart. In The Great Gatsby, the characters, Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan are said to be in love, but in reality, this seems to be a misconception. In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald portrays the themes of love, lust and obsession, through the character of Jay Gatsby, who confuses lust and obsession with love. By the end of the novel however, Jay Gatsby is denied his "love" and suffers an untimely death. The author interconnects the relationships of the various prominent characters to support these ideas.
‘’We are different from you, we were born different, it’s in our blood.’’ (Luhrmann 2013). The Great Gatsby’ a hit novel by F.Scott Fitzgerald, was later adapted to a film, directed by Baz Luhrmann in 2013. The film is narrated by Nick Carraway, tells his story but also Jay Gatsby’s and how they both become intertwined with love, scandal and sadness. This essay will discuss the statement ‘’In The Great Gatsby, the only element not restricted to one class is unhappiness. All members of all classes are equally unhappy. Discuss whether you agree or disagree with this statement.’’ I personally disagree with statement because in the film happiness is also not restricted to one class, and it is also evident that the unhappiness varies from person to person no two people are equally unhappy. Unhappiness in the classes is displayed through: Myrtle Wilson (lower class), Nick Carraway (middle class) and Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan (upper class). Myrtle, Nick, Jay and Daisy all are unhappy for a variety of reasons and some are evidently unhappier than another.
