Their tired, feeling lazy, find the material boring, and even boredom. Whether it’s paying a parking ticket, doing laundry or organizing your closet, we’ve all put certain things off. Procrastinators live in a constant state of denial not thinking about the long term consequences. As tempting and easy as it is, avoidance always catches up. An example, making changes in your diet right away and not saying you will start till Monday. C. Attention Getter: A famous author by the name of Wayne Dyer once said, “Procrastination is one of the most common and deadliest of diseases and its toll on success and happiness is incredibly heavy.”(1) In todays society it seems as if procrastination has become a normal and acceptable thing to do. It is often joked about amongst schoolmates and co-workers around the world. Nothing seems to get done until it absolutely needs to get done, then everyone runs around getting things done quickly and often times inaccurately. When I am enjoying a nice event, or have an important task to tackle, procrastination somehow factors in my life. Even though I prepare by organizing for any event or task, somehow, I am asked to do something in between those times for others. The majority of the time I would say “Yes, I will do it,” but end up pushing it aside. Although I am giving advice on how to make it better, I tend to overlook the advice that is given to me. People who procrastinate do so to try and stop them from doing something that might be strenuous in effort. People that procrastinate will also do something called “Structured Procrastination.”This means that they will do something that they normally don't want to do to get out of doing something that might be easier.
Students at FIU need to learn more about procrastination because it would help to prevent them from the stress and health problems that procrastination causes.
“I’ll stop procrastinating…Tomorrow.” This is a mindset that is possessed by a majority of students today. Although putting off writing that English paper until the night before it is due may not seem like a big deal, it has many harmful effects. In fact, what better topic is there for that English paper? Very few are spared from the epidemic known as procrastination. Even less overcome this issue. In order to successfully defeat procrastination, we must first understand it.
Even though I may be a procrastinator, procrastinating is an effective tool. During school you get assigned a lot of assignments, some may be over fall break or even Christmas break. The best thing to do is to do your assignments as soon as you can and then the rest of your break is free time. When I get assigned something, I always tell myself, I am going to get it done before I do anything else, if not I will forget and have to do all my work on a Sunday before we go back to school. The self-test that was taken during this assignment gave so much insight into the ways of procrastination. Some of the ways that humans procrastinate in are such things that typically would not be thought of. Items such as returning emails and phone calls, never registered as a form of procrastination however; things such as waiting until the last minute to do homework would seem to fall into that category.
I am happy to admit that over the past year I have grown a lot with managing this issue. I accept the responsibilities of the things I need to do and take charge. I say more ‘yes/okay’ rather than ‘I will do it later’. This is one way that I have been strategizing and will continue to do so; say ‘No’ to Procrastination and ‘Yes’ to what I have to do. I AVOID Procrastination with this method.
