Rosa Parks once said “Racism is still with us. But it is up to us to prepare our children for what they have to meet, and hopefully, we shall overcome.” Racism is a struggle that, to this day, has continued to be a major issue. The color of someone’s skin alters how a person is perceived by society as a whole. Race is a social construct created by humans to categorize the world. (Sullivan 2) The outlook on racism varies from community to community, family to family, and even person to person. Skin color can alter all aspects of an individual’s life, because unlike inner differences and beliefs, skin color is a physical appearance. Social status, perceptions, roles, occupation are just a few of the characteristics of life which can be affected simply by a person’s physical differences. Not long ago somebody could even be discriminated against and their basic rights and freedoms could be altered based on their appearance. Many people believe that the United States is a colorblind nation or is tolerant of people 's race. Racism may go unnoticed by those who believe that it is a thing of the past, but to the people who are directly impacted by racism, it continues to be play a major role in today’s society.

Obtaining a good education allows a person to gain the basic skills he or she would need to thrive in the world as an adult. In order for a child to acquire the benefits of a good education, a stable environment must be provided without the influence of any negative outside forces. One negative force that can directly impact a minority child’s education is racism. Interestingly enough, there are several other aspects that are involved in the making of the standard quality education, which include student life and disciplinary actions. A troubled student life and the impact of bias disciplinary actions can result in a lack of standard educational opportunities for children in a minority group situation. Racism can negatively affect the quality of a minority child’s education by causing difficulties in a student’s life inside the classroom, unfair disciplinary actions, and academic failure.

Our racial ethnicity is influential in what we do in life, whether it be with school, personal relations, or even job opportunities. There are some, Americans today who hold racial prejudice against people of different color and ethnicity, which as a result narrows opportunities that minorities can actually have. Racism is the trend of thought, or way of thinking, which attaches great importance to the notion of the existence of separate human races and superiority of races that are usually associated with inherited physical characteristics or cultural events. Racism is not a scientific theory, but a set of preconceived opinions they value the biological differences between humans, attributing superiority to some according to racial roots. Even in such ethnically diverse country as the United States, racism continues evident against people of different ethnic traits and skin color. According to Steinberg (Steinberg, 1995), racial discrimination has been the most important cause of inequality between whites and blacks in the U.S. Because of that, minorities in American society have been fighting over years for equal rights and respect, starting with the civil rights movement in 1960s. Also, public policies implemented since 1964 in the United States have been instrumental in reducing economic inequality between blacks and whites, such as the affirmative action, a federal program that tries to include minority groups by providing jobs and educational opportunities (Taylor, 1994). From this perspective, does racism still play a dominant role in American values and American society? If so, what are the consequences of this racism that still remain in American society? What is the impact of the Barack Obama presidency on the unending fight against racism in this country?

Racism has shaped societies since the beginning of time, as far back as the children of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Even then, people living in the land of Goshen were subjugated to racism because of their differences. From Hitler and the Nazis to the Southern American slave owners, prejudice of one race against another has resulted in atrocities. Racism has shaped the form of our present day societies. Racism will likely never be completely removed from our society it will always exist. Is racism still a problem in America more than fifty years after the Civil Rights Movement, and 48 years after the 1964 Civil Rights Act signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson? How far has America come from the days when African Americans were lynched by fanatical racist mobs and from the days when Jim Crowe laws trumped the laws set forth by the U.S. Constitution? How could an individual describe racism in America today? One could describe it as systematic. The process brought on by hundreds of years of oppression because of a superiority complex. It is the removal of basic rights and enslavement. It is the forced labor of a race to build a country that would not acknowledge them as people, only property. That was America in its most unethical form; it is the reason there are still problems today. Without out fully acknowledging the history of America’s past, the country cannot fully understand the racism that is going on today, such as the mass incarceration of the African American population and the killing of innocent black lives. Those are facets of racism in America today.

There was two FBI agent one who continued to make racism comments. He not only made comments about the criminal case also because he was black. He mention almost every crucifying remark he can make about black people. He used Cultural Racism when he constantly mention things about blacks. Cultural racism is a frame that relies on culturally based arguments such as ‘‘Mexicans do not put much emphasis on education’’ or ‘‘blacks have too many babies’’ to explain the standing of minorities in society. He act as if that black people are good for nothing people. He really shouldn’t place all blacks in the same category because all of us is not the same.

Race is a term that society has created. The term has had a long history within the United States and has grown in both the complexity of its meaning and effects as time has progressed. Before race and physical characteristics were used as a way of dividing people, nation’s would sort their population based on religion, social status and language. The concept of Race and Racism has proven to be enduring, and has had underlying effects on our nation’s social and economic structure. Race has altered the fate of every one of us, causing vast socioeconomic disparities in America. In recent years, scholars, anthropologists and intellectuals have come to understand some of the devastating effects racism has had on North Americans and have recognized the need for widespread change. Race has not only permeated the economic and social opportunity of Americans, it has established a society of spitefulness and an environment of advantages and disadvantages that greatens the opportunity of light-skinned people at the expense of dark-skinned people.

Institutionalized racism also known as systemic racism is defined as the systematic dispensation of resources, opportunities and power in society to the dominant racial groups and the exclusion of minorities. Systematic racism exists in institutions where the racial majority has the power to enforce and maintain policies and systems that favor whites and oppress subordinate racial groups throughout various channels . After living in a place like Bend Oregon for 18 years I haven’t ever noticed a difference between blacks and whites. Bend has been said to be “one of the whitest places to live”, yet I never viewed a city by its race. Being racist to me meant that it was the whites who had a problem with the blacks and whites didn’t want anything to do with blacks. I hadn’t actually seen racism in action from anyone here. The population of the United States of America has been one of mixed race since its very beginning. Boatload upon boatload of enslaved Africans provided a labor force which would fuel the American South’s economy for many years, until national abolition and the subsequent civil rights movement created a primarily biracial population of blacks and whites. The US has come a long way since those days, and today every child born into the US is taught from an early age the evils of racism and the shameful actions committed by slave-owning US citizens in the past. From textbooks to televisions, the modern USA seemingly works tirelessly to teach its population that discrimination by race is wrong and that all races are equal. This has led to a great national complacence among whites, and a widespread belief that the US has mostly eradicated racial prejudices. But it is not so, and despite a population almost entirely composed of people who would not consider themselves racists, racism still pervades in the US. In many cases modern racism occurs at the hands of whites who almost absolutely are completely unaware of their discriminatory actions. In the films “Frozen River” and “The Visitor” racism was touched on repeatedly and played an evident part in the messages they were trying to portray.

Racism is an ongoing force that negatively impacts the lives of Americans every day. The racist mindset in America stems from the times of slavery, where blacks were thought to be inferior to whites. Throughout history, the ideology of race and racism has evolved and developed several different meanings. Today, we can still see the devastating effects of racism on people of color, as well as whites. “Racism, like other forms of oppression, is not only a personal ideology based on racial prejudice, but a system involving cultural messages and institutional policies and practices as well as beliefs and actions of individual” (Tatum, pg. 9). As a result of this system, it leaves the
