Race in America has been thought of in various ways. However, some ways of thinking are more dominant than others. Dickerson believes that race has become more of a social fantasy rather than a reality. This thesis is, in fact, correct. Race is not a biological fact. A person’s race is not coded their DNA. Racial rules that stand firm in society today are simply human made. The racism that people face each and every day is the product of imaginative thinking. Racism can be changed for the better with good education, speaking up, and creating community projects. Education is a key factor when it comes to learning, and it can be a tool to educate others about race issues. Racism in today’s society often stems from ignorance of others. Ignorance from other cultures can be passed down from previous generations and can be shared throughout a family. In the early 1900s, “Americans from northern Europe called themselves ‘white men’ so as to not to be confused with their fellow laborers from southern Europe” (Dickerson, pg.1). If someone stays silent and sits back while someone is being discriminated against it can break out into a fight and can possibly escalate into something much worse. The silent person is almost as bad as the person who is discriminating. Dickerson explains “While recent European immigrants had abstained from World War I - era race riots, racial violence in the 1940s…One Italian American later recalled the time he and his friends ‘beat up some niggers’ in Harlem…” (Dickerson, pg.1). If someone in the streets then had seen that display of violence, no one would have stopped. It was not an important issue to the people of that time. Even today, however, some people cannot bring themselves to speak up. They do not want to get involved and get themselves hurt.
