The book " Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" takes place in a time period that slavery is not considered racist. It was considered normal to have a slave or to treat african american people badly. Back then the term racist was not applied to these kind of actions towards the african american people. It is proven to you that it isn't racist based on people's reactions in the situations, the reactions of the slaves, and the relationship between Jim and Huckleberry Finn. That is why it isn't racist it is just holding a mirror to a racist society, because of when it took place. The people in "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" all reacted like it was normal to act like they did towards the african american people. They all treated them like they were not as important as the white people. Whenever people get close to Huckleberry Finn Jim hides because he knows he is not considered equal. This is showing how both sides are viewing these actions as a normal everyday thing. Therefore in this context it can not be considered racist, it can only be considered normal by there standards. It can also be seen in the way that Huckleberry Finn feels guilty for taking someone else's slave. The african american people did not object openly to slavery that we can see from this book. …show more content…
This shows that even the receiving side is not taking these actions as racist, but just normal. This is proven to us when the slave Jack calls Huckleberry Finn, "Mars Jawge", what he is saying is master george.(Twain,84) Even if this book would be considered racist to us nowadays, back then it's just considered normal. The slaves might want freedom but they don't consider the actions of the white people racist, at least not from the viewpoint we are receiving. Even Jim treats Huckleberry Finn like he is someone of a higher status than
There are many important and historical themes in Mark Twains “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.” The one that I found to be the most interesting and the most historically accurate was the controversial racism that is presented all throughout the book. A lot of this time period was predicated on racism, and this book shows it by giving us eye opening examples from beginning to end.
If you're up to date with today's current events or watch the news every morning before work, I'm sure you're familiar with the concepts of racism and violence. Unfortunately, both occur everyday in today's society, just as regularly as they did in the 1840s. “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” is as novel written by Mark Twain that references racism and violence in the time era that it was written. The main character of the book, Huck Finn, has a violent relationship with his father. His father, like many other citizens in his town, is a racist. Huck’s Aunt Sally, who is letting Huck temporarily stay with her, is racist as well. Meanwhile, a runaway slave named Jim is tagging along with Huck throughout the story. Society has not changed since 1840 because many similar instances such as violence and racism, occur today.
This is hypocritical in that the white men make these values and traditions a staple of their lives, yet when it comes to slaves, they seem to go away. He also believes that, though he will use “the severest language”(Douglass) he can, he firmly believes that “not one word shall escape me that any man whose… not blinded by prejudice, or… a slave-holder, shall not confess to be right and just”(Douglass). So he sincerely believes that the average human being also knows that the treatment of slaves is unjust and unethical, but they choose not to act on these thoughts. His view, coming from the eyes and thoughts of slaves across America, show how hypocritical the nation actually is in both one sided values and not acting upon their knowledge that what is going on is wrong.
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is not meant to be a racist work. The language Mark Twain used is there to help the reader understand Jim and how others treat him. Black people were treated like property in the time period that Huckleberry Finn took place in. Jim’s speech is also shows how uneducated black people were in the time of slavery.
This just shows how much racism is a struggle for colored people. Another example of racism in the novel is Atticus defending Tom in the trial. With Tom being accused of a crime he never committed and as him being black made him the automatic suspect. In the 1930 s White people always had the upper hand in a courtroom, especially with Tom being judged by all white people. Atticus decided it was the right thing to stand up for Tom, even though he would gain backlash for it.
Many arguments have been made based on the racism in Mark Twain’s “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”. The main character, Huck Finn, travels south down a river with a slave named Jim, and the way Huck treats Jim raises questions on how racist the young boy actually is. Considering the time period, It was viewed as okay to discriminate against people of different ethnicity. Huck was just doing what everyone was doing at the time, and it was not considered racist. Therefore, Huck Finn is not racist.
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn explores the ideas of racism and slavery through the eyes of a young white boy during slave times, who throughout the book is faced with ideas and people that force him to question the morals of which he was raised with. It's very important for us to know that Huck was raised by adults with superior attitudes toward Jim due to the color of his skin. Mark Twain wants the reader to realize that Huckleberry changes over time, and as an example, Twain writes about Huck eventually helping Jim out of slavery when he knows in his mind it's the wrong thing to do. A key theme in the story is the relationship that has been built between Huck and Jim.
Huck Finn is not racist: It is a profound social statement on the inhumanity of slavery and of every individual’s born right to freedom.
Everybody is racist in the 1800’s, even the children. However, during The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, Huckleberry Finn is proved not to be racist because he helps a runaway slave survive and gets a slave out of captivity to be free, how he lies to help Jim not get captured, and how he talks to blacks like they are regular people. The first reason why Huck is proved not to be racist is because he helps him survive and escape from captivity. For example, Huck and Jim “. .
In the novel The Adventures of Huckelberry Finn, It shows the reader how slavery allowed the white society to unfairly treat African Americans as property or objects as opposed to treating them as people. The white society believed they were a lot more superior than African Americans at that time. Blacks were called really harsh names for example they would use the word "nigger" a lot specially in this novel. This novel gives us a really good understanding on how the society back then was really like and how racist people were. For example in the novel it shows when Huck is on run right after he fakes hes own death and runs into a runaway slave that used to belong to Ms. Watson but decided to run because he over heard her talking to someone that he was going to sale him to a plantation that meant that he was going to get seperated from hes family and would probably not ever see them again if he was sold. This shows how white people didnt care about them and how they were literally seen as objects to be sold and be seperated from their families.
Racism has been a problem for a long time. The story “The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn” talks a lot about racism. In this story, Jim was a running way slave. Throughout the book Huck, the main characters in the story treat Jim badly pranking him and making him feel bad until they become friends Huck decide to help Jim escape to the free state. In this story, the word nigger used to describe slaves/African. Pap, Huck Finn’s harsh father is a very racist person who sees blacks people as property. “But when they told me there was a state in this country where they’d let that nigger vote…..I says to the people the people why ain’t this nigger put up to auction and sold?” (pg.26). pap didn’t want to vote for the state he was live in because blacks/slaves
"Thus is slavery the enemy of both the slave and the slaveholder" (Douglass 31). Slaves have to live through the vicious beatings and estrangement from their families, but African Americans weren’t the only one’s that have suffered. Slaveholders fell down to the wrongdoing of humanity and exercised them without any restraints. They became violent, cruel, greedy, and ignorant. Racism has a broad effect on society, not just specific race that has been repeatedly mutilated.
In the book, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the main character Huck deals with multiple problems that he comes in contact with such as becoming more “sivilized” and educated. The most significant problem that Huck deals with effectively is racism against his own moral beliefs. As readers encounter the developmental story about a boy who flamboyantly decides to have an adventure, which leads into an eye-opening experience that exposes racism not only for readers but for the character Huckleberry Finn.
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain is a novel full of racism and hypocrisy of the society that we know. Huck continually faces the many challenges of what to do in tough situations dealing with racism and what the society wants him to do. With the novel being written in the first person point of view gives us insightful information into the challenges the Huck is facing and gives us a look into Huck’s head. Huck uses many different techniques to deal with his problems and he gets through them with the end result always being what Huck believes is right. Through Huck’s perspective we see how he deals with all of the racism and hypocrisy of society to form him into the character that he is and to serve the themes of the
African American’s living during that time period was treated like they were slaves and less than human. White America was very ignorant just like today’s white America, They treated African Americans as if they were property or animals. In Adventure of Huckleberry Finn, Twain conveys through Jim and Huck’s father-son relationship that once white America gets to know a person they become more open-minded about equality. By Twain demonstrating that Huck has unlearned the pervading ethos of the South. Through this, Huck finally starts to think of Jim as a human and treat him as equal to white.
