“The boy worked for me for 8 years and he hasn’t done any trouble.” This is what Link Deas shouted out in court in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. This trial took place in the 1930s in Maycomb county Alabama. This trial was about a girl that claimed she was rapped Mayella Ewell by a black man named Tom Robinson. Atticus was his lawyer that fought hard to win this trial. He has two kids Jem and Scout and their friend Dill came and watched the trial with them up on the balcony with the black people. Although most citizens of Maycomb lived with racists beliefs, there were people in town, other than the Finches, who supported equality for all people, white or black.
Throughout the novel of To Kill a Mockingbird Calpurnia has shown her love a quality of both skin colors. Calpurnia is a black women that works for the Finches which the Finches are white. She treats them with respect and they treat her with the same amount of respect. “Why do you talk nigger-talk to the- to your folks when you know it’s not right?” Jem said. “Well first I’m black,” Cal said. “Well that doesn’t mean you hafta talk that way,” Jem replied (Lee 172). Jem said that to Calpurnia and she answered back by saying a racist comment that because she is black she can say that kind of stuff. In addition, Aunt Alexandra is the one person that is not a big fan of her. “...You’ve got to do something about her,” Aunty was saying (Lee 136). “Alexandra, Calpurnia’s not leaving this house until she wants to,” Atticus said (Lee 137). She works for the Finches and she loves them dearly and so do they. LAstly, Calpurnia has showed her love for all skin colors throughout To Kill a Mockingbird. R. Dolphus Raymond Showed the quality of both skin colors throughout the novel. Mr. Dolphus Raymond was a man that was white but he liked black better than white people. “He likes ‘em better’n he likes me, I reckon,” Jem says about him (Lee 161). He sits with the African Americans during the trial. Not only did he sit by them but he had a black mistress. ‘ We discover he has a bit of a sordid past involving a former whut fiancee and a black mistress.
