Power Structure/ Unity and Exclusion In The Crucible, there were two groups of people. Those whose world revolved around the church, and those whose world did not. In Salem 1692, if someone was not a regular church going, rule following person, they were likely excluded from what the ideal good person was. Societal exclusion is something that happens often in history and in present day. Societal exclusion in the book is between the church and people that do not attend church. The people that were excluded from the community were Tituba, Proctor, Giles, and anyone else that did not have a strong relationship with the church. A certain group of people excluded in history is women. Women had no rights to voting, land, jobs, education, and pretty much anything else (WIC). A Woman’s role was to cook, clean, and take care of her children. Everyone expected women to have kids and be a wife. Men were thought to be superior to women both physically and intellectually (WIC). Because women had no rights to anything at all, they had to obey their husbands and do as they say. Although women eventually gained rights to voting, land, education, and jobs they still are not payed the same amount as men. Social exclusion is something women faced harshly throughout history. Men and the church in The Crucible are alike because they have the authority of what goes on in the community/society. Immigrants face social exclusion very often in America. There are many Anti-Immigrant policies that have been passed in the last couple of years limiting immigrants from migrating to America. If someone was not naturally born in America they have no right to try and become president (Dudek). This shows the mistrust America has toward immigrants to run the country. Immigrants are not payed nearly as much money as natural born citizens for the same jobs because they are not from America (Dudek). The Crucible ties in with the discrimination of immigrants for the same reason it tied in with women's rights in history.
